The powerful earthquake caused giant tsunami waves estimated to be as high as 38 meters (124.7 ft.) that destroyed towns and cities near the shore that killed over 15,899 people, 6,157 injured, 2,529 people missing. It also caused a nuclear disaster in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, causing people to evacuate. The total damage of this disaster is $360 billion, known as the costly natural disaster in the century.
The earthquake is often referred to in Japan as the Great East Japan Earthquake and is also known as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the Great Sendai Earthquake, the Great Tohoku Earthquake, and the great earthquake of March 11.

This is only half accurate, the city where this happened has made architecture to withstand earthquakes, the rest of the world hasn’t, know if you experience this it will be much more worse than what you see here.
