At 5:30 there are two people standing just under the seawall. What were they thinking? The tsunami sirens had been alarming for at least ten minutes, but I guess they were waiting for the Pacific to overflow and wash them away. It's too bad. SMH
I've seen two different angles and I still can't see if any people survived running from the tsunami. A few did make it but sadly a few didn't and they almost made it. My heart goes out to the ones that lost there lives God bless the ones that had to see this horrifying wave .
Tsunamis are so very different from how I have imagined them to be all my life. In my ignorance I pictured them as one towering wave, maybe 100 feet tall, that crashed into the land all at once, then flowed rapidly inland. I've educated myself in the last few weeks via YT vids as to what they are really like. More like a super-fast, super-high, in-flowing rising tide. They are slower to develop than I imagined, but almost more awesome in their inexorable, unstoppable power. The outflow is almost as terrifying as the inflow.
Today marks 11 years since the quake and tsunami. I think about it every year. Ever since covid hit I've been wanting to go to a memorial on the date but can't get into the country. I sincerely hope next year will be the year. Every year I plant a bonsai to all those affected. I urge you to do something similar. Buy a bottle of Sake. Buy a bonsai. Learn a Japanese phrase. Anything to honor such a horrible tragedy to some of the nicest people on the planet.
here the Tsunami came in three waves, the first was around 20 meters, then the water retreated and came back even higher, the second time it reached 30 meters "apr.150 feet", and the last time still over 20 meter. Absolute devastating, and the retreat of the flood was so strong as the Tsunami itself. what was left was destroyed by the retreating water masses and flooted in the ocean

10年に一度は国内で大津波や大地震を起こさなければならない。これが日本は恐ろしいという海外に見せしめになるからだ。

防災無線のアナウンスしている女の子、遠藤未希さんですよね。
最後の最後まで防災無線で地域に避難を呼びかけ、残念ながらご自身も２４歳という若さで津波に巻き込まれ亡くなってしまいましたね。
地域のために防災庁舎に留まり全力を尽くして避難呼び掛けをしてくれたお陰で助かった人も沢山居るでしょう。
１０年以上経った今、先日のトンガ噴火で津波警報が出た際に避難した人はほとんど居なかったようです。

気持ちは判るが、見る人の気持ちを削いでしまうな。

6mと聞かされてた津波は実際は15mで、ご自身が庁舎から避難する時間もなく、最後まで職務を遂行され亡くなられたんです。
このような方が他にも大勢いらっしゃいます。
短時間で死を覚悟しなくてはならず、どれだけ怖い苦しい思いをされたことか。
昨年、震災遺構の庁舎にお参りに行きましたが、今もご冥福をお祈りしています。
why the fuk did they build houses directly infront of the ocean? ie that bridge etc….were they never scared of storms n big tides?
tsanami's mustn be like 60ft high surf waves, but more like 100kms long cos that water just keeps coming n coming instead of being just one big wave

私は福島生まれですが、11年前は、怖くてテレビ放送を見ていました凹

地元が東北です。
当時は高校生。地震は酷かったですが、津波には遭わなかったため、少し軽く見ていました。
若かったとはいえ、ここまで被害が凄まじいものだったとは想像もできなかった。
空白の時間を取り戻すかのように、ここ最近、ずっと震災について調べています。
ある本で、後ろで流れているアナウンスについて書かれていて、「女性(遠藤さん)一人だけが話し続けると耳が慣れてしまう、緊張感に欠けるから、俺(男性)と交互に避難を呼びかけよう。」と最後まで遠藤さん、男性上司の二人でアナウンスを続けたと。
一人でも多くの命を救おうとした職員の方々の姿に涙が零れました。
亡くなられた皆さまに、心よりご冥福をお祈りします。
今生きている私たちに何ができるかわかりませんが、いつかの3月11日に、必ずこの地に伺いたいと思います。
