class=\"jus\">\n<p>Anticipation. Hanging on the edge of silence wondering when the person you have entrusted to go on the same journey with you will respond. More spontaneous than sex. I have only seen Cecil Taylor (b. 1929 &#8211; d.2018) once but I know that his greatest partner is silence and anticipation. Cecil, the preeminent force of nature behind free jazz or fire music or far out music or whatever you may choose to call it since 1956, spearheaded the radical movement with the piano and as band leader in abstract jazz with numerous releases under his Cecil Taylor Unit and solo performances. Cecil`s personality is known to be brash and so is his dominance on the piano making a totally unique language of melody and dissonance that is only rivaled by Sun Ra`s in its intensity.<br \/>For this particular recording, Tony Oxley (b. 1938 &#8211; d. 2023) is his focused co-partner or passenger since it is Cecil who is navigating very extraterrestrial terrain here in this 1998 duo recording titled \u201cFlashing Spirits\u201d (Burning Ambulance Music) released this past July. \u201cFlashing Spirits\u201d with its quiet release, doesn\u2019t seem monumental but in the jazz continuum, it was. 1988 marked the beginning of Tony Oxley and Cecil\u2019s long friendship and partnership in music. This despite each of them being highly respected innovators in their respective countries. While Cecil transformed into THE avant gardist pianist in the early 1960`s, over in the UK, Tony was evolving with the likes of Derek Bailey and many others who participated in the Company recordings and other releases put out on Incus Records (like his brilliant self named record put out in 1975) in the late 60`s onward. Like Taylor, Tony created numerous brilliant recordings so it is quite remarkable that neither shared the stage til 20 plus years after they began.<\/p>\n<p> It was the summer of 1988 that Cecil took part in a month long series of concerts in Berlin, Germany at the request of the city and in being matched with Tony, fireworks were set off. On July 17th, they first performed and that initial magic was released as \u201cLeaf Palm Hand.\u201d \u201cFlashing Spirits\u201d was only 2 months later. That alone should illustrate their synergy as the pattern in music of \u201coccasionally collaborating\u201d is often the chosen course for left field musicians aiming to keep things fresh.<br \/>Starting from zero and slowly constructing, taking away the barriers of anticipation as the forms begin to appear, it takes nearly 2 and a half minutes before things are \u201cgoing.\u201d But \u201cgoing\u201d is a difficult word to understand in this context because there is a vicious tug of war and no consistent downbeat.<br \/>This recording is just a document and this is not classical music or heavy metal music where you know the beginning and revel in the end. This is kinetic really live music and you have be the kid sitting on the edge of his seat looking back and forth at Cecil Taylor as his hands wiz past keys and clear melodies ring ping ponging on numerous registers. Cecil is sitting but not exactly, because any new idea might make him jump. He will sneak glances at Tony but Tony is more likely to be paying attention to Cecil cause he knows \u201cthis motherfucker is crazy\u201d and may change his mind at any minute.<br \/>If you don`t like this music then I can`t convince you. But if this is your bread and butter, then you should already know at heart the difference between a cool jazz record and this. One is for smoking and getting chill or giggly with a significant other over wine with a special scent. Recordings like \u201cFlashing Spirits,\u201d are a totally different story. They are initiations into places the average person cannot enter. It is because of this that I feel jazz like \u201cFlashing Spirits\u201d is a code. Illegible at first, it takes concentration (and maybe a little dedication) to be able to comprehend. Similar to any coding language or religious initiation. Those initiated will know they are lucky to have this recording and damn, the sound for this is gorgeous. The drums and piano are pretty freaking clear and it feels like I am sitting right in front of them. I have listened to a bunch of Cecil records but this is definitely going in my top 10.<br \/>My brain for a minute was even was asking why? Why is this good? Why am I engaged? Freaking why? And then I started re- listening. Deep listening. Walking down the street with my special noice-cancelling headphones on picking up on the phrases and I could hear the difference between new pianists that try to sit on the mantle of Cecil and Cecil himself. See Cecil grew up surrounded by melody. Gospel, blues, classical and what not. From the center of melody Cecil embraced cacophony and when he did, he took his engrained melodies with him. This isn`t noise. He is remixing all the melodies of his youth into a new chocolate cake with melodies chopped and screwed. So through the frenzy and the chaos, I still hear chunks and chunks of melodies. I am sure my mother wouldn`t but that`s just fine.<br \/>When this was recorded in 1988 at the Outside In Festival in the UK, Cecil was 58 or 59. Please read that sentence again cause I know people who are 39, talking about pains in their knees and backs. Tony was a little younger at 50 approximately. Still I know kids who have difficultly walking up stairs at 30.
