It deepens understanding of the reality of settler colonialism underlying the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and prompts reflection on the fundamental connection between land and people.<\/p>\n

Spring is the season for gathering wild vegetables. Families and friends gather the bounty of the fields, share it, and gather around the table. Wild vegetables gathering is a culture deeply rooted in the lives of Palestinians. Under Israeli occupation, this traditional gathering practice has been criminalized. Za’atar (a type of thyme with deep cultural roots as a culinary staple), akkuub (the king of wild vegetables), and other plants are, however, now commercial products cultivated on Israeli collective farms. Yet gatherers still roam the fields, under the watchful eyes of nature conservation officers. If caught, they face fines or prison. Harsh interrogations await them in court…<\/p>\n

Foraging\u2014gathering wild plants for food\u2014is one of humanity’s most fundamental and universal livelihoods. Under Israeli occupation, Palestinians continue this practice. Why do Israeli authorities persistently seek to regulate this modest traditional livelihood under the guise of \u201cnature conservation\u201d? And how do people navigate these restrictions to maintain their relationship with plants? Set in the Golan Heights (Israeli-occupied Syrian territory), Galilee, and Jerusalem, this work moves between fiction, documentary, and archival footage. With lighthearted humor and a meditative tempo, it portrays people who resist the occupier’s cultural plunder and tenaciously weave their lives together. It invites viewers to reconsider today’s conflict\u2014rooted in Israel’s history of expelling Palestinians\u2014from the perspective of daily life, and to reflect together on the meaning of the connection between land and people.<\/p>\n
