ジャバリ・バンクス、Z世代から絶大な支持『バッド・ジーニアス 危険な天才たち』インタビュー映像
本国で興行収入1位、16の国と地域でサプライズヒットした『バッド・ジーニアス 危険な天才たち』を『コーダ あいのうた』としてハリウッドリメイクしたスタッフらが手掛けた『BAD GENIUS（原題）』が、邦題を『BAD GENIUS/バッド・ジーニアス』として、7 月 11 日（金）新宿バルト９他にて全国ロードショー決定。このたび、ジャバリ・バンクスのインタビュー映像が公開されました。
アメリカ フィラデルフィア出身のジャバリ・バンクスが演じるのは、努力型の秀才でリンの相棒となるバンク。ジャバリは、「The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air」(90～96)のリブート版ドラマシリーズ「BEL-AIR」(22～)で俳優デビュー。ピアニスト、ソングライター、シンガー、 ラッパーとしても活動し多彩な才能を発揮し、全米のＺ世代から絶大な支持を得ています。
ジャバリは、自身の演じた役柄について、「バンクはナイジェリア移民で、家族からの期待や責任感を強く感じているんです。まだ 16 歳なのに、家の大黒柱であろうとしている。学校でも家庭でも、全てにおいて“完璧”であろうと努力していて、そのプレッシャーを常に背負っています。今まで演じたことのない、多面的な役だったので、挑戦しがいがありました」と話します。
バンクもリンと同様に高い学費を賄う為、奨学金制度を利用。「物語の序盤では、バンクは殻に閉じこもっていますが、リンと出会うことで、彼の本来の優しさや人間味があふれ出てきます。まさに“自分らしさを見つける”成長の物語だと思います」と分析。リン役のカリーナ・リャンとのシーンはとても楽しく演じたといいます。フィラデルフィアのホテル
で撮影したシーンが特に印象に残っているといい、「部屋中に食べ物が散らばってる中で、ダンスするっていう、すごく自由で楽しい瞬間でした。バンクとして、あれだけ自分をさらけ出す瞬間はとても貴重だった。誰かと一緒にいて、安心して自然体でいられる。そんなシーンが撮れたことは、僕にとってすごく特別な思い出です」と述懐しています。
劇中に出てくるＳＡＴ（大学進学適性試験）を実際に受けたことがあるというジャバリ。「ほんとうに厳しく管理されているテストなんです。僕はスコアはそんなに良くなかったけど、名前を書くだけで 400 点もらえるんです！最高点が 1,600 点だから、名前を書いただけで 4 分の 1 ある（笑）たしか僕は 1,200 点ぐらいでＣ評価とかでしたが、リアルな経験として、今回の撮影には役立ったと思います」と茶目っ気たっぷりに教えてくれました。
演じる上で、「十分に役作りをするために、ナイジェリア系の友人とたくさん話をしました。できる限り正確にこの役を表現したいと思い、彼らの発音や話し方のクセを掴むために発音コーチについてもらいました。彼らの使う言葉のリズムを身につけたかったんです。また、ナイジェリア移民の第一世代として感じるプレッシャーや文化的な背景を理解することが大切でした」といい、友人たちの話が、バンクというキャラクターを形作る上で助けになったといいます。
役作りの上で難しかった点として、「本当のバンクの姿を少しずつ明らかにしていくことでした。彼はとても注意深い人物なので、発言などすべてについて意図を明確にしたいと思ったんです」と明かしています。
本作は「期待に応えるプレッシャー」がテーマのひとつ。ジャバリ自身も高校時代に同じようなプレッシャーや期待を感じたことがあるといいます。「最高の仕事に就くためには、最高の生徒にならなくちゃいけないと思っていました。でも、僕自身も成長の過程で、人生はそんなにうまくいくもんじゃないということを学びました。学生時代は自分自身にものすごくプレッシャーを掛けてしまう。映画の中では、そのリアルなストレスや重圧がしっかりと描かれていると思います」と振り返りました。
*才能を生かした“危険なビジネス”の顛末*
貧しい家庭で暮らすリンは、全科目で学年トップの成績を収める天才的な頭脳の持ち主で、名門高校に特待生として迎え入れられます。
ある日の試験中、親友を救うために奇想天外な方法で解答を教え、好成績を取らせてしまいます。そんなリンの才能に目を付けたのが親友の恋人。富豪弁護士を父に持つ彼は、学校の劣等生たちを救済する“危険なビジネス”を持ちかけてきます。
しかしそれは、世界を跨ぐ前代未聞のカンニング計画の始まりでした…。

my name is Jabari Banks and I play Bank yeah Bank has a lot of things going on internally uh he is a Nigerian immigrant and so there is a lot of pressure from his family and that he puts on himself to not only take care of business in school but outside of school and take care of his family uh he’s the the man of the house at 17 16 years old yeah bank is Bank is uh his story arc is he’s he’s this character that’s we we find him in his shell and he’s always in his head and he’s and he’s focused he’s a very focused person but this character Lynn she comes in and she cracks him open like an egg and uh and and we see the the sweet inside that that he has and uh and I think throughout the movie we see him start to blossom and become himself um it’s a true coming of age story for him for sure absolutely yeah when I was in high school I for sure felt similar pressures or or expectations um you know from the schooling system I feel like it’s the idea that you know you have to be the best student possible in order to get into the best school possible in order to get the best job possible and as I grew up I learned that you know life just doesn’t work that way uh for the most part and uh and uh I think that at this age you know the pressure that these these kids put on on themselves is is a lot it’s it’s a lot and it’s high and um and I think through this through this movie we get to see the the real stress that it brings on on kids this age you know and uh in order to to really get ready for this role uh I I I spoke to a lot of my friends who are Nigerian uh of Nigerian descent and um because I I am not I am not and so I wanted to make sure that I was nailing this role um as as accurate as possible and uh and so I worked with you know a dialect coach uh just to get some of the words down you know what I mean and some in some of the the cadences down that they use um and so and and I work I spoke with a lot of my friends who uh have been in similar positions and uh it’s definitely an interesting perspective uh to to to talk to someone of Nigerian descent and a Nigerian immigrant first uh first generation and so there’s there’s definitely a lot of pressure that comes with being a first generation Nigerian immigrant and uh and so they they helped me a lot with with this process for sure yeah some of the challenges that I faced creating this character was definitely you know peeling back the layers of who he really is and and why does he say the things that he says and and why he doesn’t say some of the things that he doesn’t say you know and this is a very meticulous character and so I wanted to make sure that I gave everything intention i remember me and Kina Leang were shooting the scene where we’re in the hotel room in Philadelphia for the first time and there’s food everywhere and there was these plate of nachos that were stinking up the whole room and uh and in the scene uh we danced to anime music and I remember we had a blast that was that was such a fun day and uh and it it was amazing to be able to let loose i did i took the SAT i think I’m the one of the only people in the cast that took the SAT because everybody is from Canada or I don’t know if they take the SAT in Canada or or elsewhere uh yeah I took the SAT i didn’t get a great score but you get 400 points just for writing your name and I think the highest that you can get is 1,600 or something like that yeah and you get 400 points just for writing your name uh so I think I got like a I think I got like a a 12 or which wasn’t bad that was like you know C i was a C student you know what I mean uh it’s kind of average but because it’s fun it’s a thriller go watch it bad genius it’s fun it’s great it’s heartwarming it’s heartbreaking and I think you’re going to love it to be honest I’m the last person on earth who needs to cheat ask anyone [Music] pop of class and in each subject you can attend accent for free beautiful i’m Grace [Music] [Music] i’m just guessing money’s pretty tight right now $200 a test what if we made our own code from music this is A this is B i just need to get him into Colombia i don’t know how you’re doing it and I don’t care the rich kids get great scores we get paid are you crazy it’s the most secure test in the world to beat a Rick game is to outmaneuver it [Music] win here we go this is what you do with the future i’m sorry [Music] but to go after even if it isn’t the best plan on paper no matter what the rules say b genius
