『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』実は企画が40回却下されていた！成功を信じた製作陣たちの証言／特別映像

公開されるや否や、日本はもとより全世界で大ヒットとなった『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』。後にタイムトラベルSFの最高傑作といわれ、今なお愛される不朽の名作だが、その輝かしい成功の裏で、製作開始がいかに困難を極めていたかを明かす、貴重な特別映像が到着した。
映像は、ロバート・ゼメキス監督の「映画作りは苦難続きだ」という言葉の紹介から始まり、製作のニール・キャントンが「小さな困難が積み重なる」と当時を振り返る。脚本／製作を務めたボブ・ゲイルが「作品を撮り始めるまでが本当に大変だったんだ」と語るように、第2班 第1助監督のミッチェル・ボックも「スタジオが決まらずなかなか企画が動かなかった」と証言。当時は「“タイム・トラベルものはヒットしない”と断られ続けた」とゲイルは明かし、その企画が却下された回数は、実に40回ほどにも及んだという。
撮られないまま終わる可能性もあったこの作品の成功を、唯一信じた人物こそが、スティーヴン・スピルバーグだった。製作総指揮／第2班監督のフランク・マーシャルが「スピルバーグには観客の感覚が分かるんだ」と評するように、彼はちょうど設立した製作会社アンブリンの「初仕事」として本作を手掛けることを決断。旧知の仲であるゼメキスやゲイルと物語を練り始め、そこに才能あるクルーが集結した。
ユニバーサル・スタジオ製作部門代表のショーン・ダニエルも「最高の製作総指揮だ」と絶賛、フランク・マーシャルが「広い視野で物事を捉え、必要な時だけ介入する」と語るように、スピルバーグはまさにその手腕を発揮し、プロジェクトを成功へと導いた。
まさに「伝説の始まり」を振り返る、当時のスタッフたちの熱のこもった貴重な証言が、今、明かされる。こうした製作陣の揺るぎない信念と情熱が結実した奇跡の物語となっている。

[Music] Bob Zmechus will say making movies is like being nibbled to death by ducks, right? There’s no one bite that really hurts. The process of getting back to the future in front of the cameras was so arduous. It took them a long time to get that thing green lit. Nobody wanted to do it. Rejection, rejection, rejection. Time travel movies don’t make any money. We heard that over and over again. They had taken that film around to how many studios? movie been rejected like 42 times, sometimes by the same studio with different executives. Yeah. You know, the odds were that that movie might not have gotten made, period. The one guy that always had believed in Back to the Future was a fellow by the name of Steven Spielberg. One of the things I always say about Steven is he’s got an audience sensibility. What he likes, a lot of people like. He was an industry to himself. He just opened up Amlin Entertainment at Universal. He was great friends with Bob and Bob. And once they came in and started talking about the story they wanted to tell, then we wanted to surround them with the right crew. Back to the Future became the very first Amlin production. It was a unique opportunity for all the right people coming together at the right time. This amazing group of Zmechas and Gail and Neil Canton, Frank Marshall and Spielberg. I would say that Steven’s the best executive producer you could have. Steven has the 10,000 foot view of things and he’s there watching us all run around and run around, but he steps in when he’s needed.
