牧師として神に従事し、後に【20世紀を代表するキリスト教神学者の一人】として世界中に名を馳せたディートリヒ・ボンヘッファーは、ナチスに抗い続けた闘士としても知られているが、本作は彼がヒトラー暗殺計画に加わった経緯と、知られざる半生を描いた初の伝記映画となる。
この度解禁となるのは、ドイツ国外にナチスの蛮行を知らせようとするボンヘッファーの奮闘を切り取った本編映像。ボンヘッファーの名言として広く知られるセリフが飛び出すワンシーンとなっている。
教会がナチスに支配され「帝国教会」と名付けられていた第二次世界大戦下のドイツ。その状況を食い止めようとしたボンヘッファーは、表向きは牧師の立場をとりながら、反ナチ抵抗運動を指揮するスパイ生活をしていた。ナチスの真実を世界に広めてドイツ教会を救うため、イギリスへ向かったボンヘッファーは牧師たちを集めて「教会が今、声を上げなければ、100年間声を失います」と警鐘を鳴らすも、争いを嫌う牧師たちは「それはドイツの問題で国際性がない」「平和を築くのが教会の仕事だ」と口々に反論。そんな牧師たちの態度に、ボンヘッファーは「悪の前で沈黙することは、それ自体が悪です。沈黙は発言であり、行動しないのも行動です」と語りかける。
ボンヘッファーがその短い生涯を終えてから80年、今だからこそ彼の言葉を知り、語り継がなくてはならない大切なメッセージが描かれる。
【ストーリー】
ドイツはナチスの台頭と共に大きな変革期を迎え、独裁者ヒトラーを神のように崇拝する聖職者たちが現れていた。危機感を抱いた牧師ボンヘッファー(ヨナス・ダスラー)は「教会は聖域であり、権力の場ではない」と反発し、ヒトラーを全人類の脅威と見なした。そしてボンヘッファーは、ドイツ教会を守るためスパイとなり、ユダヤ人の大虐殺を行なうナチス政権を崩壊させるため「ヒトラー暗殺計画」に加担する。信仰と信念を貫き、命をかけて闘う彼に、やがて究極の運命が待ち受けていた。
