Well, not in this story. A 17-year-old girl had agreed to drive her brother around for the day, and he promised to pay her $50 for the favor. Everything was supposed to go smoothly since their mom managed both of their bank accounts and usually handled the transfers between them. But things didn’t go as planned. When the time came for the transfer, the mom somehow mixed things up. Instead of moving $50 from the brother’s account into her daughter’s, she accidentally took 50 out of her daughter’s account and then added the same amount back, essentially canceling everything out. The daughter noticed right away that something wasn’t right. She pointed out that if her mom had taken 50 from her and then added 50 back from her brother, that meant she never actually received the payment. It was basic math, but her mom wasn’t having it. Instead of calmly checking the numbers, the mom got defensive. She argued that her daughter must have spent $8 in between, which somehow explained the missing payment. But the daughter wasn’t fooled. She tried to explain again that subtracting 50 and then adding 50 only brings the balance back to where it started. No gain, no payment. Finally, after a long and heated back and forth, the mom snapped and said, “Fine, if you want to bother me so much, I’ll just give you the $50.” The daughter stood her ground, and in the end, she got paid, but not without a wave of guilt and frustration from her mom.
