In an alternate America ruled by a harsh dictatorship, thousands of teenage boys volunteer each year for a deadly competition called the long walk. From the applicants, 50 are chosen by lottery, supplied with food and water, and ordered to walk non-stop along a designated route under military supervision. If a participant drops below 3 mph, 4.8 km hour for more than 10 seconds, he receives a warning. Maintaining the pace for an hour erases one warning, but a fourth offense results in immediate execution by gunfire. The contest continues until a single boy remains alive who is rewarded with a large sum of money and any wish of his choice. Raymond Ray Gerity arrives at the starting line meeting fellow walkers such as Peter McVice, Billy Stebins, Arthur Baker, Kie Parker, Gary Barovich, and Hank Olsen. The event is overseen by the commanding officer known only as the major. On the first day, Ray bonds with Peter while the first casualty occurs when Thomas Curley suffers a leg cramp, slows down, and is killed. Gary is despised by the others after provoking Rank into an attack that leads to Rank’s death at the hands of soldiers. Later, Ray confides in Peter that his true reason for joining his revenge, he intends to wish for a carbine so he can kill the major, who executed his father for defying the regime. Peter admits that when he reaches his breaking point, he plans to simply stop and accept death. As the days wear on, more boys collapse. Hank becomes delirious, lashes out at the guards and is gunned down, left to bleed as punishment. The next morning, the group learns he was married and agrees that whoever survives should share some of the prize money with his widow. Haunted by Rank’s death, Gary begs Ry to accept him into their circle, but soon loses his mind and kills himself with a spoon. The walkers dwindle until only Rey, Peter, Billy, Arthur, and Collie are left. Billy, weakened by illness, urges them to stop supporting each other, believing it only delays the inevitable. In one town, Ry spots his mother and nearly gets himself executed trying to reach her, but Peter drags him back in time. Holly later seizes a guard’s rifle, shoots the soldier, and turns the gun on himself after being injured by the others. Arthur, suffering from internal bleeding, eventually gives up and steps aside. Billy’s condition deteriorates further and before surrendering, he reveals to Ray and Peter that he is the illegitimate son of the major. His intention was to win and demand recognition from his father. He thanks them for their companionship, then halts and accepts his death, leaving only Rey and Peter still moving. The two arrive in another town crowded with onlookers. Peter deliberately sits down, but Ry forces him back to his feet, not realizing he has stopped walking himself. Soldiers execute Ry on the spot and the major proclaims Peter the victor. When Peter is asked to name his wish, he carries out Ray’s plan instead, demanding a car beam and using it to kill the major.
