[Slow commentary] The faces of the golden age of Japanese cinema! Top 10 legendary male starsHey Marisa, today we’re talking about the faces of the golden age of Japanese cinema! Top 10 legendary male stars! What are we talking about? I’m looking forward to it! Hey, Reimu! Today, we’re going to focus on the golden age of Japanese cinema, when it was at its most brilliant. From the postwar period to the period of high economic growth, it was an era that produced many works that attracted the world’s attention. Wow! It was an era that was recognized by the world! I’m excited to see what kind of actors will appear! That’s right! This time, we’ll introduce the top 10 legendary male actors who colored that golden age and are still talked about today. Their acting continues to inspire people across the ages. Now, I’ll explain the charms of the stars who have made their mark on Japanese cinema history, so enjoy until the end! 10th place – Kobayashi AkiraWell , it’s finally time to announce the ranking! The memorable 10th place is… Kobayashi Akira, also known as Might Guy! Might Guy? What does that mean? It’s a nickname that sounds strong. Ah, it was a nickname used to mean something like a great guy. Kobayashi Akira was a big star who supported the golden age of Nikkatsu alongside Ishihara Yujiro. In particular, the genre of stateless action that he established excited young people at the time. Stateless action? I’ve never heard of it before. It’s a Japanese movie, but it feels like it’s not Japanese? That’s right. The setting is Japan, but the main character just appears with a guitar and shoots a gun. The story is simple and clear, and the selling point was the excitement of not being particular about the details. The representative work is the Wataridori series that began in 1959. The main character, Taki Shinji, played by Kobayashi Akira in this work, is the very symbol of that. A hero who fights while playing a guitar is cool! He looks like a cowboy. What was the story about? The main character of this series is a Wataridori that doesn’t stay in a specific place. Each time, he just appears in a different town, helps the people he meets there, and defeats the bad guys. But once the case is solved, he says goodbye to the heroine and leaves for the next town with just his guitar… This nihilistic and free-spirited way of life stirred the admiration of young people at the time. He was also a huge success not only as an actor but also as a singer, and his songs such as the car show song and “I’m appearing under my old name” are still famous today. Wow! He was a truly talented person who could sing and do action scenes . Ah. He didn’t just play hero roles. In the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, he played a tough yakuza and showed his range as an actor. His popularity was immense even in Hong Kong and Taiwan, beyond borders. Film directors John Woo and Jackie Chan were also big fans, and Jackie in particular said, “I want Kobayashi Akira’s autograph more than anything!” He was a true Mighty Guy who didn’t fit into the Japanese framework. 9th place – Atsumi Kiyoshi In 9th place, there is no one who can talk about national actors other than this man! It’s Atsumi Kiyoshi, also known as Tora-san! Wow! Kiyoshi Atsumi! I think he has a very strong image as Tora-san from “Tora-san: It’s Tough Being a Man”! My grandparents loved him too. I’m sure they did. After all, “Tora-san: It’s Tough Being a Man ” is a huge hit series that shines brightly in Japanese film history , with 48 films produced over 26 years from 1969 to 1995. It’s also recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest film series played by the same actor . A Guinness World Record! That’s amazing! But what was the appeal that made it last so long? It’s all down to the character of the main character, Torajiro Kuruma, commonly known as “Tora-san,” played by Kiyoshi Atsumi. He travels all over Japan, returns to his hometown of Shibamata, and causes a commotion. And every time he falls in love with a beautiful Madonna, he gets rejected… This familiar pattern is obvious, but it still makes you laugh and cry. This heartwarming story captured the hearts of people all over Japan and never let go. He had his heart broken 48 times! It ‘s a bit sad, but he was still a character that was loved and couldn’t be hated. Ah. But Atsumi Kiyoshi was not just Tora-san. In the 1977 film “Mura of the Eight Graves,” he played the famous detective Kindaichi Kosuke, and stunned the audience with his intelligent and mysterious performance, which was completely different from the usual Tora-san . However, he himself was very careful to protect the image of Tora-san, and rarely revealed anything about his private life. He was an actor who really put his life on the line to play Tora-san. That’s right… It’s really an incredible determination to protect one role with your whole life . Right? That’s why Atsumi Kiyoshi is not just an actor. He is a unique existence that will live forever in the hearts of Japanese people as Tora-san . 8th place – Katsu Shintaro Next up in 8th place is this man, and the word “daring” cannot be used to describe him! Shintaro Katsu, the unconventional genius actor! Shintaro Katsu! I’ve heard the name before. I have the image of him being a very unconventional person, but what kind of movies did he appear in? His signature work is the Zatōichi series. It’s a story about Ichi, a blind but skilled swordsman. Since the first film was released in 1962, he has continued to play the role for 26 years, including movies and TV dramas, and it can be said to be his life’s work. A master swordsman despite being blind – what an incredible setting! I wonder how he fights? That’s what makes Zatōichi so interesting. Ichi, played by Shintaro Katsu, is blind, but his hearing and sense of smell are abnormally developed, and he fights by sensitively sensing the enemy’s murderous intent and breathing. And the most amazing thing is his sword fighting. He holds his sword in the opposite hand to normal and slashes like a beast from a low position. The realistic and vivid fighting style , completely different from the period dramas that had emphasized stylized beauty up until then , shocked the audience. Wow, I can feel the power just by imagining it… The characters were unique, but the man himself was also amazing, wasn’t he? Yes, he was truly an extraordinary man. There is a famous episode where Katsu Shintaro was dropped from the film “Kagemusha” directed by Akira Kurosawa. Katsu Shintaro was cast as the lead, but he brought a video camera to the set without permission to objectively check his acting . This enraged Kurosawa, and the two had a big fight and then parted ways. In the end, Katsu Shintaro was dropped from the lead role. Fighting with the world-famous Kurosawa…! That ‘s on a huge scale… Right? Normally, it would be no surprise if he was frozen out of the industry. But he had such overwhelming charm and charisma that he was able to swallow even such unconventionality and scandals . That strong vitality that overflows from the screen is exactly why Katsu Shintaro is a legend. No. 7 – Yorozuya Kinnosuke (Nakamura Kinnosuke) The number of period drama stars is gradually increasing! Who is No. 7? No. 7 is the prince who built the golden age of period dramas! It’s Yorozuya Kinnosuke! Yorozuya Kinnosuke…? It’s such a great name. Eh? But I think I’ve also seen the name Nakamura Kinnosuke on an old movie poster …? You noticed something good, Reimu. He was originally born into a famous Kabuki family and was active under the name Nakamura Kinnosuke. Later, he became independent and took the stage name Yorozuya. He was the top star of Toei period dramas from the 1950s to the 1960s, and truly created an era. Wow! So he was a movie star who started out as a Kabuki actor. What made him so popular? First of all, his elegant, sweet face and his dance-like, splendid sword fighting. He was a perfect example of the word “prince,” and he was a star who played Miyamoto Musashi many times in movies and on stage , making him a hit role in his life . His Musashi was not just strong, but also a human swordsman with suffering and conflict, and he captivated many audiences. He was a star who was not only strong, but also had beauty and elegance. He was just like a prince! But Kinnosuke’s true worth is that he is not just a handsome star. In the TV historical drama Lone Wolf and Cub, he played the role of Hai Itto, an assassin who travels with his son Daigoro in a stroller in search of revenge. His shaved eyebrows and menacing appearance, the complete opposite of his previous handsome image , shocked viewers. The famous “Chan!” was born from this work. What ?! That “Lone Wolf and Cub” was Kinnosuke?! I was surprised because his image was completely different! Right? He continued to evolve as an actor. From a prince with a sweet face to a great actor with depth. His brilliant transformation and the passion he dedicated his life to historical dramas are what make him an immortal star. No. 6 – Morishige HisayaWell, we’re finally in the middle of the ranking! In No. 6, we can’t talk about postwar Japanese entertainment without this man! The great star, Morishige Hisaya! Morishige Hisaya! Somehow, he seems to be something bigger than just an actor . He sang, too, so I have the image of him as a very important person. That’s right. He was an actor, singer, comedian, and even a screenwriter and essayist, and he was a truly versatile person. But of course, his achievements as a movie star are also incredible. Wow! What roles were he famous for in movies? His signature role is, without a doubt, the “President” series. It’s a hugely popular comedy that ran for 17 years from 1956, in which Mori Shigeru plays a clumsy but lovable president who stirs up trouble every time. It gave dreams and laughter to the salarymen of the high economic growth period. It’s refreshing to hear now that a comedy with a president as the main character! I wonder why he became so popular? It must be because he was a much more familiar figure than the heroes of previous movies . Mori Shigeru created an image of a president who is not perfect, but full of humanity. He was also a genius at improvisation, and his excellent interactions with his co-stars made the film even more interesting. His acting, which combined humor and melancholy, was one of a kind. He has a strong image as a comedian, but did he also play serious roles? Of course. In literary works such as “Meoto Zenzai,” he played a good-for-nothing man and swept all the film awards. And above all, his song “Shiretoko Tabijyo,” which he wrote and composed himself, became a huge hit, and he established an unshakable position as a singer. He was the first actor to receive the People’s Honor Award, because his wide-ranging achievements were recognized. The first actor to receive the People’s Honor Award…! He really was a person who continued to run at the top in various fields. Ah. An entertainer who symbolizes the Showa era. It is no exaggeration to say that his existence itself was Japanese popular culture itself. 5th place – Takashi ShimuraWe’re finally entering the top 5! I wonder what kind of amazing person is ranked 5th? In fifth place is the great actor that Japan’s world-renowned master director Akira Kurosawa loved and trusted the most! It’s Takashi Shimura! Takashi Shimura! He was Kurosawa’s favorite. But rather than being a flashy leading man, he may have a stronger image of a serious actor who supports the work… That’s what makes him so great. Of course, he has starred in many films, but he can breathe life into any role and give the story overwhelming depth and persuasiveness. He is truly the man who was called the conscience of Japanese cinema. The conscience of Japanese cinema…! What a name! When you think of his masterpiece, is it that one? Ah, the first thing that comes to mind for many people is the timeless masterpiece “Seven Samurai,” which shines in film history. He played Shimada Kanbei , the leader of the samurai who were gathered to protect the village from the band of ronin . I know! He was very calm, wise, and an extremely reliable leader! That’s right. Only Takashi Shimura could have played that thoughtful, humane leader . The contrast between his stillness and motion with Toshiro Mifune, who played the fierce warrior Kikuchiyo, was also amazing, and filmmakers around the world still praise his performance as perfect. What other roles is he famous for besides samurai roles? His other masterpiece is the movie “Ikiru.” It’s a story about a city hall employee who finds out he has only a short time left to live due to stomach cancer and struggles to find the meaning of life. He embodied the despair and hope of a person facing death with his intense acting, bringing tears to audiences around the world. What?! That ‘s a completely different role from a samurai leader! I didn’t know he had such a wide range of roles! Yes. In the original Godzilla, he also played Dr. Kyohei Yamane, who was troubled by the appearance of Godzilla. Japanese films were highly acclaimed around the world because of his solid acting ability , which allowed him to play any role brilliantly . He is truly a great actor that Japan can be proud of in the world. No. 4 – Nakadai Tatsuya In fourth place is the current giant god of Japanese cinema ! Nakadai Tatsuya! Mr. Nakadai Tatsuya! I know him! Even now, he plays very powerful roles in movies and dramas. His eyes are very impressive. The sharpness of his gaze is what makes Nakadai Tatsuya so special. He did not belong to a specific film company, but appeared in one film after another by famous directors such as Kurosawa Akira, Kobayashi Masaki, and Okamoto Kihachi. In other words, he built his career as a lone wolf with great talent. He has appeared in works by many directors! What are some of his most famous films? In Kurosawa’s films, he left a strong impression as the eternal rival of Mifune Toshiro. In Yojimbo and Tsubaki Sanjuro, he played the cool and intelligent nemesis to Mifune’s wild hero, and they had a fiery showdown. Mifune Toshiro’s rival! That looks worth watching! One of the things you definitely can’t miss in his career is the six-part epic “The Human Condition,” which runs for a total of nine and a half hours. He embodied the protagonist, who is tormented by the absurdity of war, with a terrifying performance. Furthermore , the breadth and depth of his roles are immeasurable, including the role of a tragic samurai in Kobayashi Masaki’s Seppuku and the role of a mad old king in Kurosawa’s Rebellion . A nine and a half hour movie?! To be able to play that role is beyond imagination… He’s really a monster actor. Yes. He’s a chameleon actor who can take on any role , from good guys to villains to historical figures . Even after turning 90, he continues to perform at the forefront with his passion and curiosity. He himself is the history of Japanese cinema itself. 3rd place – Ishihara YujiroWe’re finally entering the top 3! I wonder what big star will appear? I’m excited! In third place, we can’t talk about Showa stars without mentioning this man! The sun that shone brilliantly in postwar Japan! It’s Ishihara Yujiro! Wow! Yu-chan! Somehow, I feel like he’s a special person who goes beyond the framework of an actor ! He’s truly a star among stars! That’s right. When he made his brilliant debut in the 1956 film “Season of the Sun,” the whole of Japan was shocked. Completely different from previous stars, this free and rebellious young man was called the Sun Tribe and became a social phenomenon. He became a social phenomenon!? Amazing! What role was he famous for in the movies? His signature name is definitely the man who brings about a storm. His singing while playing the drums became the envy of young people at the time. He could do action and sing, and it was a big hit. His wild and sweet charm made the whole of Japan go crazy. He was the perfect hero , doing action and singing ! But for me, I have a strong image of him as the boss in “Taiyo ni Hoero!” Yes. Although he was a top star in the movie world, he founded Ishihara Promotions himself and entered the world of television. In his role as the boss in Taiyo ni Hoero!, he established the ideal image of a boss who warmly watches over young detectives, and became an absolute hero in the living rooms of living rooms. He was always the envy of everyone, both on the screen and on television . That’s right. His way of life, his lifestyle, everything was out of the ordinary. He was the sun himself , running through the Showa era . The radiance he left in the Japanese entertainment world will never fade. No. 2 – Takakura Ken Finally here, No. 2! The man most admired by Japanese men… Ken-san, also known as Takakura Ken! Ken-san! I feel that he has an aura that is completely different from other stars… He’s quiet, stoic… I feel like he’s the person in the world who best suits the phrase “let your back speak.” That’s exactly right. Takakura Ken is not just a movie star. He was like a spiritual pillar , embodying the ideal man for Japanese people . The origin of his career is Toei’s Ninkyo movies. When you say Ninkyo movies, you mean Yakuza movies, right? Why did they become so popular? At that time in Japan, there were more and more salarymen living within organizations. Unable to say what they wanted to say, living while enduring injustice… Ken-san cleared the pent-up feelings of such people on the screen. I see! So, on our behalf. Ah. In Abashiri Bangaichi and the Showa Zankyoden series, he played a man who was always silent and patient. However, when his sense of duty and humanity was violated, he stood up to evil alone. The audience went wild at his appearance. There is a famous saying that he is clumsy, but he lived his life in a way that truly embodied that. Cool…! A man among men! But he wasn’t just a star in gangster movies, was he? That’s right. He broke that image himself with director Yamada Yoji’s Yellow Handkerchief of Happiness. A clumsy man who has just been released from prison overcomes his past and returns to his loved one… his appearance moved the whole of Japan. I’ve seen that movie, and it moved me… Even though he has few lines, you can tell all his feelings just from his facial expressions. In the Hollywood movie Black Rain, he competed with foreign stars on equal terms and gained international fame. But he never became arrogant and always maintained a humble attitude. It is his personality that makes him Ken-san. His talent, his personality, everything was genuine… Yes. Takakura Ken is a legend who will continue to live on in the hearts of Japanese people as an ideal man. No. 1 – Mifune Toshiro Ah… Ah… Finally, finally the time has come… The glorious No. 1…! Who on earth is it!? My heart can’t take it anymore! There is no one else who can stand at the top of Japanese movie stars ! The world’s Mifune, who Japan is proud of, no, who has engraved his name in the world’s movie history! It’s Mifune Toshiro! The world’s Mifune…! As expected! Somehow, it feels like he’s in a different league! I hear that all the overseas movie directors were influenced by him! That’s right. In particular, his pairing with the master director Akira Kurosawa can be said to be the strongest in movie history. The 16 works that the two of them created literally shook the world. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas… famous directors admired him and wanted to shoot like Mifune. Specifically, what kind of movies and roles were amazing? First of all, I have to talk about Kikuchiyo from Seven Samurai. He is a peasant man who disguises himself as a samurai, but he is rough, comical, and yet has a sad past. That dynamism, energy, and humanity… that is a role that only Toshiro Mifune could play. I’ve seen it, and he really was jumping around on the screen like an animal! But what’s amazing is that he’s not just a rowdy guy! That’s right. And the bodyguard. Unshaven, hakama, toothpick in his mouth. The nihilistic ronin Kuwabata Sanjuro, who hardly speaks, became the basis for the image of the hero in the Spaghetti Western that Clint Eastwood later played. He created the prototype of coolness in the world. I’m kind of proud that the original Hollywood hero was a Japanese samurai! What’s amazing about him is the way he immerses himself in his roles. There’s even a legend that in the movie Throne of Blood, he was able to calmly perform while being shot with real arrows. His incredible acting spirit and the wild charm that emanates from the screen transcend national borders and races, and directly touch the souls of the viewers. Real arrows…?! That’s not just acting…! It’s a life-risking act! He is the only Japanese actor to have won the Best Actor award at the Venice International Film Festival twice . Strength, intensity, and sensitivity. He has it all, truly the King of Actors. He is the undisputed No. 1 star in the history of Japanese cinema! Overall Review/Summary I’ve looked at the top ten all at once, and I’m already overwhelmed… They were all such great and fascinating actors that it’s almost presumptuous to even rank them . Yes, absolutely. There were the sun-like stars who lit up postwar Japan, and the world-famous Mifune who bowed down to the world with his overwhelming presence. They didn’t just play roles. They taught us dreams, hopes, and the aesthetics of men with their very way of life . They are truly legendary men. The passionate souls they left on the screen will never fade, even through the ages. If you haven’t seen any of the movies I introduced this time, I recommend you to watch at least one of them!
