Austrian Trip Report flying from Chicago to Vienna onboard one of the Austrian B787-9 on a nice autumn afternoon.
A beautiful autumn flight from Chicago to Vienna onboard the brand-new Austrian Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The flight was fully booked, but still, the new plane, new cabin, new seats, and the beautiful use of the Sky Interior… made this one a nice flight.
However, and this is a “BIG HOWEVER” I’m not planning to fly Austrian’s B787 again. The crew blooks the windows in fully dim and they don’t unlock them until they decide it’s a good moment to do so. For this flight it worked more or less well, as the Sunset and Sunrise came exactly at the end of the dinner and with breakfast… but be ready to have flights in full darkness. Don’t count with me, Austrian.
We took off to the west and after a 180° turn, we started our route towards Vienna. The views of the airport and Chicago downtown just after takeoff were incredible. From there we flew towards Canada, where we found the night. The cross of the Atlantic was completely uneventful, as we couldn’t see anything with the blocked windows. Maybe there were some Borealis, as we were at a good latitude and the perfect moment of the year… but we’ll never know that, as Austrian doesn’t allow you to see anything outside the plane.
Once over Europe, we enjoyed an amazing Sunrise over Germany and the Czech Republic. After a nice approach between clouds, we landed on time in Vienna.
About the catering service, they offered a main meal after departure and a little breakfast (very little) just before starting the descent to Vienna. The main meal was quite ok, but still nothing special. I would say the main meal was the best. The salad, flooded in mayonnaise, and the plain piece of cake they offered as dessert wasn’t special at all. The breakfast was just a small warm sandwich with coffee & orange juice.
Now it’s your turn!
Have you ever flown with Austrian? Which route? How was the experience? Have you ever flown on the Boeing 787? Have you ever been in Chicago? Maybe in Vienna? What do you think about the Austrian service? What do you think about this blocked windows policy?

I’m with you. I think it’s disgusting that the cabin crew can dictate as to when you can and cannot look out of the windows. As you say the 350 has the same, facility which is bad news. The best part of the trip, for me, is to see what you are flyer over. Great video as always. What about a trip on a A340 my favourite Airbus. All the best. Mick.🇬🇧
Nice trip report! By the way, how come you said that you don't want to fly on Austrian 787 ever again? Also, you said that Asiana Airlines will be featured on the channel in 2025. If you ever fly Asiana Airlines, I'd suggest flying them on the Seoul – New York route on the OZ224 sector and sitting at Seat 38A on the Airbus A350. The reason why you should choose OZ224 instead of OZ222 is due to the fact that they are barely any videos on YouTube showcasing the OZ224 flight. In order to fly on Asiana flight OZ224, you would need to pick a travel date after April 30, which I'd suggest picking a date in May where you can fly both Asiana Airlines and T'Way Air. To get to Seoul, I also suggest flying T'Way Air from Paris to Seoul on the A330-200 and sit at Seat 46A on the A330-200. Hope to see a trip report on Asiana Airlines and T'Way Air soon!
I’ve seen reports of passengers demanding their window shades be unlocked. Some successful others not.
Hello there and welcome back Lucas ! .. and there you go again absolutely another spectacular beautiful shooting filming footage compilation travel trip reports and gorgeous stunning footage capturing camera work and I really appreciate and enjoy watching your lifestyle adventure lifestyle documentary video channel ! .. keep it up and have a wonderful blessed weekend and see you for next week upload video ! .. thanks again my friend ! ..
Hoy estás realmente iracundo. Toma um calmante. Pero un buen trip report. Abraço.🙋✅🇧🇷
Shutting windows by night is also stupid, because the outside light doesn't disturb nobody, while the view can be very interesting for those who sit by the window.
Flying with Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Tokyo on A340-600 (unforgettable, fantastic plane) I had the fabulous privilege of 4 hours of northern lights over Siberia.
With Austrian, I would have just the claustrophobic feeling of a blocked view.
Thanks!
I flew Austrian once from DXB and will not choose them again either. It was a very old A330, food was also mediocre but atleast they couldn't dim the windows. There are so much more better options for better price. Not sure why Austrian Airlines is so bad because the country is rich and beautiful. Anyways, amazing report as always !!!
Awful food
i really dont like the crew locking the windows that would put me off flying on that plane
Ngl, that first meal looked bland and anaemic. Also, blocking windows by crew members should be banned. If I pay for a window seat then I expect to look out the window at any time. Good review though 👍🏼
Good sense of humor regarding your comments on breakfast and thank god that I do not have to fly with Austrian air for whatever reasons. I think their way of controlling how window is utilized is not acceptable. If the company management still has common sense after reading these comments, they will have to revise. Thanks for the video.
The A350 dimmable windows are an optional extra. It depends on the airline rather they wanna install it or not. So dont worry as far as i know the only carrier who has opted for the dimmable windows on the A350 in Economy Class is Starlux
Did you ask for the crew to unlock the windows?
Nice 👍
Well, for a national run Airline, the product looks very bland, aircraft interior plain, basic and looks no better than a budget airline, food again looks awful, for a brand new aircraft surely they could of come up with something a bit more Austrian themed than this, also they need a complete new branding, new aircraft and a new smart livery and cabin to to make a statement.
Windows must be locked clear for takeoff, but after that the controls should be released to the passengers. That’s what the manual states. I know the purser and will ask him about it next time I see him.
Still passengers are more relaxed and quiet when the cabin is dark so that might have been the intention on that night flight.
No me gusta que bloqueen la ventana. Me gusta mucho ver el panorama. Puedes explicarme porque tienen esa política?
To block the windows makes no sense at all . I would be pissed off with that , i tell you .
I wonder what stupid reason they have for that . From Portugal 🇵🇹
Interesting the crew saying “todays aircraft is the 787-900” 😏
Dimmable windows seem like a solution to a non-existent problem. Unless the idea is to save weight by not having plastic window shades so you can board more pax. In any case the passenger should have control of the window dimming if they paid for the seat. Not being able to look out sucks the joy out of what remains an amazing experience for humans…
I flew on a KLM 787-10 last year and they do not blocked the windows. Also the breakfast was a real breakfast not something like that
I have that plane on my photo XD Nice video
Lucas, I agree with you about the dimming windows. For the money you pay to fly you should be able to look out at any time 😮Beautiful plane ✈️ otherwise I enjoy the weekly flight to wherever & on whatever. Great job! 😊❤
The aircraft was flying for Bamboo
Que mal lo de las ventanillas y brillo de las pantallas
Windows should not be closed in the flights by the airlines. Anyhow your comments and description is really highly appreciated.
do they served hot towel and snack with drink before main meal
