im super late to the party but i just finished watching samurai champloo and the vibes are real… man i wish i grew up in the 2000s because of master pieces like this
This and the Dragonball (and DBZ) ending song of the woman singing will forever create a pit in my stomach whenever i hear them because of the flood of nostalgia and just the reminder of when life was SOOOO MUCH SIMPLER ❤️🔥🤟✌️
2023 just started some minutes ago for me… and somehow this is the first song that came to my mind XD… Well I guess Happy New Year to anyone reading this, now I shall vibe to some Nujabes hehe
The show, the soundtrack, it just transports me back to a safe place in my teens-early 20's. It wasn't a big deal then, just another tv show among the famous line-ups. but gosh it has definitely left an impact after these years . first day of 2023 and still gives me that safe/hopeful feeling.
damn used to watch and rewatch samurai champloo with my ex of 9 years. hits hard now after aprox 10 months of separation. especially considering the bittersweet end of the series 🙁
we used to rewatch while eating and smoking weed this masterpiece, Mushishi and Hunter x Hunter. Our big three. Its funny that those three share the common thread of "its about the journey, not the destination".
If you are here you know the end of Samurai Champloo, it makes it clear.
Hunter x Hunter 2011 ends with an amazing quote: “You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want.” Which is a more beautiful and poetic way to put it, but it means the same. My ex and I used to worship this motto. She did a graphic, printed it, framed and hangued in our wall. When we were over and I was crying like a baby (I was a freaking mess those first weeks I realized we were over), she held my hand and walked me to her studio were the frame was hanging, she pointed the phrase again so I could understand… she had a sad smile. I got it.
And what about Mushishi? Its about a wandering guy, not caring about some final result, just knowing the world, meeting people, trying his best to help them on his path. Very chill anime, very seinen.
Other anime that we watched two times (me three times because I introduced all those animes to her, so some of them I had watched previously, like this; I did knew Samurai Champloo but could never watched from beginning to end; and I introduced her to HxH anime during my first watch, back in 2014. I had watched all the 99 anime back in '07 btw) was Cowbow Bebop. It was also a precious one to us. The second rewatch was caused by seeing the netflix adaptation lol. we had to wash our eyes.
JoJo Bizarre Adventure was also a darling to us, we rewatched many times part 1 through 3. And maybe a rewatch of part 4. This doesn't comply to the theme I was talking here, but nevertheless is amazing. And at the end the journey is what matters too. Our favorite part was 3 which is the most "journey is most important" part of all in my opinion. I'll never forget the first time we saw the new secret opening where Dio finally comes out shouting ZAWARUDO. It was one of the most epic times and I'm glad we shared that moment together. We both screamed SHIIIIIIIIIIT!! while watching each other in incredulity. So damn epic. David productions really put soooo care to the JJBA adaptations, so much respect.
Anyways, the lyrics of this song obviously talk about farewells, grief, losing a loved one (be it death or just going to separate ways), and dreaming of seeing them again. It very bittersweet, the sadness is palpable. But its also beautiful.
I think when two people that loved each other greatly had to split for any reason, the grief comes in and thats just a more powerful manifestation of love. This song captures this feeling.

Listening to this song brings me back to watching this as a kid. Long summer nights, hanging out with friends online while we watched toonami, but specifically samurai champloo. Not many of my friends from those days are left. I miss em.
