I’m looking for a job that’s the right fit – not one that fits right now. Let me know your thoughts on this topic in the comments!

A job search is never one sided – the employer and the employee both use the interview to evaluate if it’s the right fit. Some people think I’m crazy for turning down job offers, but in my eyes, I’m respecting the company’s time and potential future employees.

  1. If more people were able or willing to seek a job like you are more people would be happier in their lives. Keep doin you Kristen

  2. Kudos to you on submitting so many applications. Do you have any tips. I have a very difficult time submitting applications, I get anxious when writing the cover letter. I think it comes from feeling very unqualified because I'm new to the work force and have little to no experience yet.

  3. Good for you Kristen!! You have the right attitude!! It does have to work for you!!!! Some employers appreciate good staff but don't get treated well!!I I have learned this the hard way!! You have to really think of yourself!!

  4. for me, a job is for the $$ and benefits (especially matching 401K). If it is something I love or even like isn't important. I do the "fun stuff" in my leisure time. I think of a "job" as income.

  5. I got laid off around the time that you did. I got offers and turned some down too. I just felt like I wasn't going to be happy there or felt like it wasn't for me. It was hard saying no and not jumping into the first one that I got offered due to not having a lot of income but I was patient and now I have a job that I enjoy and love (so far lol).

  6. As long as you're able to pay the bills and be happy with where you're at, it's fine being picky about what job you take. No sense in taking a job you don't think you'll be happy with unless you're just desperate for money or you're stressing too much about paying the bills. Find the one you want and think you'll be happy with. Any employer should respect that and know that if they find a person who also picks them and wants to be there, they'll get an awesome and loyal employee who will take pride in their work and really be as asset to the company. Good luck!

  7. You are right – the interview goes both ways, it’s not just them evaluating you, it’s you evaluating them. Ironically, if they see that you ask intelligent questions of your perspective role, it may make them want you for that role more and more, but after hearing their responses, it may make you desire the role less and less!

  8. I took a break from web design after having 2 kids and it's hard to get back in there FT – I freelance and do other things as well to keep busy and make some money. You are right – it's hard to combat the "you're either employed or not" mentality. Most people are in a hurry due to bills, etc, but if you've got a cushion then that's awesome! Hope you find the right fit!

  9. I think you are doing this the right way!! If the job isn’t right, you will be back to a job search again. Best to do it right the first time!

  10. Who hoo! You go girl. I think our society is so brainwashed that having some w2 job but like I have said before why do you need a job when there are so many ways to make money doing what you love to do. Job..= Just Over Broke. Let someone else take these jobs and stick with what you love. I love what you are doing. Ive told my wife to do the exact same thing. Don't go for the job because of money take it only if its something you want to do.

  11. My question would be, if these are jobs you wouldn’t particularly love to have then why are you applying in the first place?
I have been interviewed and declined positions as well due to salary, so is it maybe something along those lines?

  12. I think it is great how you are viewing the whole process. I recently started a job but my prior job I only had for 3 months. I didn’t think it through and jumped into a position for the wrong reasons. I hated it. I felt bad for wasting their time. I quit before having another job lined up. I had 5 interviews going on at the time and I had 2 offers in a week and I was able to take a job I’m enjoying.

  13. I've had similar comments although I haven't directly addressed turning anything down. Several people have told me I'm not in any place to turn down anything right now. That's really narrow-sighted. I can't take a position that doesn't pay enough to live on and therefore get in the way of the things that are really important like building a future income online or helping my mom. You have a really good conversion rate. I usually do several hundred applications before I get an interview.

  14. You are doing the right thing. I’ve turned down jobs before; one job matched the salary I wanted but then the vacation time was horrible. And another job bC the pay wasn’t enough. You need to find the right job with the right fit and you will. Good luck!

  15. I totally understand where you are coming from. I have the opposite problem people always ask why I stay at my job when I could be working somewhere that pays more. When I explain I value my time and the flexibility it gives me over a few extra dollars they think I am dumb and insane. The truth is I am happy and value my freedom more then the extra dollar.

  16. Well people will expect that you are going to the job once you get an offer as you do not apply to places that you do not want to work at. Otherwise what's the point in applying. Research before you apply people

  17. I think when you are educated with experience you can to be more selective on where you want to work. Especially if you have the ability to not to have to settle. Unemployment rates are low now so the job market is also in your favor. Look for the good fit for you!

  18. KIRSTIN…Why are you applying for all those jobs, if they are not what you are looking for or the right fit..You know by the job description and the pay of that job is right for you..How many businesses are there in Cleveland that are going to be the right fit for you, or that you wont find in your town..Which will leave you in limbo, and your unemployment wont last forever either and neither will your savings..Just saying..

  19. Thank you for sharing! You sound very responsible and it is smart to know yourself and what type of job is good for you. You also have other sources of income and you are being very responsible with money and your time.

  20. Yep. Usually the money is low or benefits are non existent. Then they wonder why the turnover is high. Sit outside the building and watch the people walk in. If they all look sad, don't even interview there, the culture is toxic. I interviewed at a big bank years ago, the main office. Everyone looked sad sad sad walking in, and the parking lot had a hundred speed bumps. Dealing with speed bumps twice daily would be a real drag.

  21. I’ve been watching this journey you’ve been on since you lost your job & I was pleasantly surprised. I honestly thought it was going to be a bunch of videos of not really doing much and you feeling sorry for yourself but you have inspired me so much. The way you didn’t miss a beat was amazing to witness & the fact you are debt free is not something most people can say. I applaud you for being picky when it comes to working. I firmly believe you do not have to sacrifice happiness to live comfortably. It’s a matter of priorities. I’m working towards getting my dog obedience trainer certification so I can open a rescue. It won’t make me rich but it’ll make me happy. Can’t wait to see what happens next for you

  22. Good for you, wise decision as you have that financial luxury. You can only get so much info from paper after that it's seeing how the interview(s) go.
