A lot of you have noticed in many of my videos that I do not abide by certain curly girl method rules. You have seen me break rules like brushing curly hair, diffusing curly hair with heat, bleaching and colouring curly hair, using non-curly girl method approved products and more. Due to a lot of these actions, I noticed that I have seemed to stir up a lot of controversy in the curly hair / natural hair community.
So in this week’s video, I thought I’d let you guys GRWM as I do my favorite curly hair routine, share my opinions about the cgm (what I agree with and what I don’t agree with), share some of my best curly hair tips, and answer your questions about why I don’t follow certain curly girl method rules!

What I encourage all of you to do is; do what feels right to you. The curly girl methods can seem like very strict rules and guidelines and make it seem like that is the only way to do things, when EVERYONES hair is so unique. So basically, if theres something you want to try, don't be afraid to do so. it will not kill you. Use a product or try that technique to see if it works for you, even if it isn't "allowed" . Also, just because something, a product, a technique, a style did not work for one person, do not be afraid to try it for yourself. You never know, it just might change your life. Take charge of your own journey and HAVE FUN DOING IT! It's just HAIR! And it's YOUR hair, so take charge of your own journey, stay educated by watching informative, life-changing YouTube videos, and again, DO WHAT FEELS RIGHT! XOXO, Mell
i can still remember the first time i heard of the curly girl method. in the beginning i was so happy that there is finally a way to do my hair right, but when i looked into it more…. i was shocked… not using shampoo and not burshing my hair was just not smth i agreed on especially with the amount of product that needed to be put on the hair… not burshing my hair gives me a huge headach and therefore litteral pain… curly girls need to test out what works for them and what not… try it out adn once it works stick to it for a while… my hair has been through a huuuuge transition for about 3 years and my curls have never been so beautiful
Could you talk about very damage and unmanageable curly hair, some hydration hair mask …..
Idk I agree with some of the things you said but personally sulfate dries out my hair a lot but I do know it gives me a super deep clean so I do that about once a month but I never use Silicone, I used to use it before I got a little more involved with my hair but I swear once I stopped using it my hair grew so fast! Everyone products are their own so I’m glad this works for you! But it doesn’t work for me
When talking about sulfate, do they mean only SLS and SLES?? Or it includes sulfonate and sulfoccinate and stuf??
I read all about the cgm a few years ago. I even tried following, but my hair was so weight down that I had to be clarifying almost every wash day. I also 100% agree with using a brush to distribute product and smooth strands.
I’m so glad I found your channel. I went through an episode of build up due to cleaning with a co-wash. It doesn’t work for every day. My hair feels so clean and shiny since I started using sulfate shampoo.
For my hair, I feel that sulfates don’t work. They feel nice at first but eventually my hair feels dry. But I also don’t strictly follow the curly girl method. I think you just have to find what works best for your hair whether that’s sulfates and silicones or not. Love your videos.
Curly girl method was a great starting point for me. I've grown and learned but I remain grateful for the Method 😁
I only finger detangled for a long time, and it SUCKED. Took forever and didn't really work. So glad to have you now Mel. I've DEFINITELY missed the feeling of a brush on my scalp.
Could not agree more! It's a FAD.
Hi! Nice video!!! And what do you think about the CGM said that sulfates increase the production of natural oil on the scalp? Instead of control it? please forgive my English I'm from Venezuela I hope you understand what i mean
One month in & looking up why other ppl don’t do it. I have been damp styling& my scalp is soooo itchy bc it takes a day for my hair to dry still. I’m going back to combing my hair out & putting in a turbine twist after my shower. I can’t take it
25 minutes of pure info thank you
After you said, "yur craysee" I immediately pressed like. 🤣
I don't have a diffuser, can I do it the old fashioned way and scrunch with my fingers and dry it? Thanks
Sulfates cause cancer
I'm getting a perm on October 1st and I was researching how to care for it. I got spooked by all the crazy hair care tips out there about not shampooing. I have very oily virgin hair. I tried sulfate free shampoo in the past and even that was not enough cleansing for my hair. I feel relieved to be able to use regular shampoo. I have very healthy hair and I think I should be fine damage wise after the perm
Oh my God I’m a hairstylist too and I feel the exact same way that you do about the curly girl method and when people find me they always expect me to approve LOL love your videos
Can we be friends please?! My hair needs you! Your the best😍🤩🥰
I JUST WANNA TELL YOU …. Not only did CGM confuse the s— —t outta me but made me question my hair product buying sooooo dreadful!
YOU and your videos make me actually happy to fix up and do my hair !!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻 for putting yourself ; your cute funny AUTHENTIC beautiful self out here for us curlys to learn from!
I’m 53 and have never enjoyed my hair More than the last several months of learning from you as a new Sub & Watcher!!
ManeGurl’Mailea 👍🏻🥰😚
god thank you for this video, there are multiple ways to healthy beautiful curls. i needed to open up again after following cgm more or less strict! your points helped me realize i can and SHOULD still try products that maybe contain sulfates, while still relying on natural ingredients. probably also need to step up my diet lol. lifted pressure of myself <3
thank u, this was so helpful <3
The reason I don't do the cgm is bc you can't brush your hair, unless it's wet. I HAVE to brush my hair, it gets tangly and stringy and just, I have to. My hair is wavy. But I do some of the cgm things. Like I've started using prose custom shampoo, sulfate free. (But I just bought some sulfate shampoo from your link) I try not to use a lot of heat on my hair. I blow dry on warm. I rinse with cold (as cold as I can stand) water. I use inverse… if you don't know what that is its ice conditioning. I have a satin and bamboo pillow case. I guess that's all lol. Btw my hair is super frizzy but less since I've been doing all this things. I also just bought a Lpinye hair dryer lol it's a lot like the dyson. But I Ain't spending 500 bucks on a hair dryer it was 40 on Amazon. Anyway what do you think of what I been doing? Do you have any thoughts? Any criticism? I also have limited use of my left hand. Basically all I can do with it is hold things. Some of the things yall do on your channel I find it hard so I just do me…. one handed.
Just wanted to say that the CGM actually saved my hair. It was very frizzy, dry, straight and hard to detangle, now it's shiny, curly and healthy. I've never stopped shampooing or brushing o.o I just use sulfate-free & a detangling brush sometimes:) So I'd recommend it for damaged curly/wavy hair! If you don't like it or it doesn't work – it's okay~ I'm writing this comment for people who might think the CGM doesn't work – it did for me and still does.
I've never once heard about finger detangling. I've only been reccomended to use wide or large toothed combs.
Personally brushes kinda suck in my hair. Ginger looks like a lion sucks lol. But the large combs allow me to brush it even when it's dry. (Usually I comb right after a shower).
Is it still alright to use moisturuzing conditioners that have a emollient ingredients even in a humid tropical climate though? Or should I use the ones that have humectants instead? Medium density wavy here. Thanks for this insightful vid btw!
hahahah you go girl! I brush my hair all of the time
I have tried the CGM. However, I cannot see the (common) sense in not brushing your hair, stimulating your scalp and yes. Shampooing the sebum build up out and off your scalp. A clean canvas works best for me and I have 3 different curl patterns from 2b to 3b. Thanks for the videos. Your amazing
I have colored hair so I am not really kin on the silicone cause it would mean I'd have use a clarifying shampoo and I dont want to mess my color .
So I try to minimise the amount
Excellent
I tried going no-poo and co-washing, and it got NASTY. My hair just felt like plastic and gross and sad. It's so fine, heavy ingredients make it limp and heavy and slick and terrible.
I got a "low-poo" that cleans my hair nicely, and a conditioner with silicones that has a good protein balance, and my hair is happiest. It's been a lot of work finding what my hair likes best, but that combination has made my hair happiest! My next step is finding after-wash products that really get that curl to pop.
Thank you so very much!
Y’all I have an odd issue of weird, white buildup on my scalp and idk what it is. Before, I used to use some Suave shampoo + conditioner combo and still had this issue but now, my routine is more complicated but I still have the buildup. Does anyone know anything to help? 😭
I use shea moistures coconut shampoo + conditioner and curl cream btw
THANK YOU! I've been struggling with the CGM for years thinking I was doing something wrong. Struggling with finger combing, not using silicone products, no sulfates, people telling me I shouldn't color my hair while missing it sooooo much, and awful scalp issues. I've been to the point of just being so deflated, soooo fed up with my failed attempt at CGM, embarrassment by my scalp, and leading to depression. I found your channel through Instagram and it feels like enlightenment! For the first time in years I'm excited about my hair journey! Thank you so much!
I brush my hair every morning and my curls are fine . As long as the hair is wet it’s fine.
Thanks for showing your hair fall/shedding. I shed a lot even though I detangle and take care of my hair all the time.
Wow. Seeing a knowledgeable professional validate my my suspicions that the whole Curly Girl thing is egregiously extra & gave me cult vibes when I checked it out on Reddit. I am not about to spend the amount of time, effort, & money on perfecting my curls when my diffuser & (minimal) products work great and when they don’t, I have thermal spray and a ceramic curling iron.
Ergo… I never got around to trying the method as I was too busy being put off by the avalanche of rules & contraband products (and the glaring judgement of curly girl cult members on Reddit towards sulfates, silicones & heat styling tools) to fully read up on all of the information…
Anyways- new to your videos and never one to gush- but I love you. Lol you’re videos are highly informative and entertaining ❤️
This is one of my all time favorites by a curly haired youtuber, feels always GUUUUUD to watch
Only using conditioners as a cowash, then adding a leave in and styler leads to hygral fatigue.
thank you for getting some things claer. but: please have a talk with sarah ingle !!!!!!!!!! i really would like to see a collab / discussion. watch her video about 'your hair isn't dry'
