…(What goes on under the rocker cover) If you haven’t set your tappets correctly your engine might be losing loads of power. My mission is to fix what is causing the pithy problem of a flat-spot on my classic Mini 998 cc Automatic engine in my Outspan Orange car but before we check anything else we need to set up the valve ‘timing’ or more specifically; the valve clearances.
Edd China’s Workshop Diaries Episode 52 – Sorting out a flat spot on my Mini engined Orange car starting by setting the valve clearances.

Make things easy on yourself…no skill required……buy a set of go-no go feeler gauges…..simples 👍🤓
That's a very convoluted way to check valve clearances. Much easier to use the rule of 9. When number 8 valve is fully open open adjust number 1. Tight valve clearances are usually an indication of the valve seat wearing. Another good reason to check them regularly.
Terrible looking inlet manifold, the manifold from a Maestro 1300 would be an improvement.
Best to glue the rocker cover casket to the cover with a light coating of contact adhesive.
Black brake fluid problem sounds more like the flexible lines are failing and not only contaminating the fluid but swelling when the are used hard.
absolutely a nightmare on a TR7

Nice one Edd! And good to see the Orange out and about again! 🙂
There's 2 TDC's, you only set the valve clearances on 1 of those strokes.
If you rotate the engine to TDC and feel no play, you're probably on the wrong stroke – of course, they could be massively out of adjustment, but that's unlikely.
That might be my old Aerial

The inline splice is called a solder splice. It has a wax ring on either end to provide a good level of hermetic sealing. As a result it should be considered superior to heatshrink alone. They are used in the aircraft industry where there is not sufficient space for an aviation terminal block and where the effects of vibration can be mitigated for example inside stick grips!
What is the status of the different price draws you did on the Channel?
Last year you did the #milwaukee one, but I have never read or seen the results of that. Can we read on the winners somewhere?
And about the Porsche:
I'd suspect the brake hoses. They might be deteriorating on the inside. A lot of old motorbikes have the same. These hoses are often not changed on regular intervals.
I still have my dad's Gunsons Valve Clearance Setter (Click-Adjust), it accounts for any wear that the rocker could have, and make the job alot easier. 1 click = 1 thou if I remember?
Also, next time remember the rule of 9 (1 down, check 8. 2 down, check 7. 3 down, check 6. etc.)

Please get a Honda CBX to work on! Love the super wide inline 6 cyl.
Small ones are more juicy.
Top Tip : The easiest way to check for a vacuum leak is to spray starting fluid around the intake manifold, carb, and vacuum lines while it's running. If you have a vacuum leak, you'll hear the engine surge a little as it sucks in the starting fluid.
Get rid of that glass fuel filter in the outspan. Those are dangerous.
Show viewers a Rich Tea biscuit Edd, That was the optimum colour for a spark plug. However with more modern fuels/additives the colour is going more to grey these days.
What is Ed going to do when the internal combustion engine is phased out?
Brilliant video thank you Edd and Paul
Re Porsche brake fluid issue. I wonder if it's something really basic like the driver is using the handbrake between sessions?
A lovely simple engine, I miss these toys.
I was on the road with a E-250 Ford panel truck with a 351 V8 and it started losing power. This was in the middle of the night between gigs (traveling with a band at the time) and we had to make the next town. Of course, it was rainy and about 27 (-3C) so we found an awning at a closed business so I could work getting soaked.
I ruled out oil issues, air filter and fuel supply issues. Then proceeded to check for missing cylinders by removing plug wires at idle and listening for a change. Turns out I had three cylinders that were not firing, all on the same side of the engine.
Thanks to my dad, who was a mechanic, giving me a KV tester that Christmas I was able to determine that the issue was not in the spark distribution and when I pulled those plugs, they looked good.
Next, I pulled the valve cover and discovered the issue. The rockers on each of the dead cylinders were way too tight, even for hydraulic lifters. I loosened the rocker nuts and found that the exhaust valves on the dead cylinders were about slightly higher than the intake. This indicated to me that the valve seats were sinking leaving the exhaust valves constantly open. Thankfully I had a few nuts in my kit that were the right thread to double nut the rocker studs, so I gapped the failing valves to match the resting gap on the working cylinders and managed to get all three cylinders back up and running. Granted I had to readjust these valves twice more to get us home but it worked.
I never did find out why that head failed like that but I am so glad for what my father taught me about cars and how many times it has gotten me out of tough spots. Thanks Dad!
7:11 I just can't get over the ease in which Edd explains all this for laymen very complex stuff to the extend I actually understand what the challenge is and I can follow along his analysis and solution finding. that is of course why we all tune in when he starts talking. It is so tranquil yet mind boggling stuff and it is a great place to be at, Edd China's cul-de-sac of hard core repair presented as a lovely afternoon tea!
Now these comments below are proof that sites like Edd's are what Youtube is all about. Helping other people and sharing problems and solutions.
Thank you everyone. But mainly, thank you Edd and Paul.
5:16 – this is the first time I found out EXACTLY why there needs to be gaps.
And you explained it (as usual) VERY clearly.
Thank you!

Edd , I have a issue just can't seem to get to bottom of, air bag light come on, turned out was sir bag module, so replace that now got issues with steering angle sensor, I've plugged it in a re set it lights go off but within 5 miles it's back on,. There was no fault with angle sensor before the air bag module was replaced, it's on quashqi 2007 cheers mark 👍
For the brake fade question. I had 2010 Mazda 3 and when I changed the brake pad, all of a sudden problems arised. The brake pad has organic compound, so whenever I treated the brakes, the fadings appeared. Organic brake pads are not so great at dissipating or conducting heat, so heat occumulates in the caliper so in the brake fluid. I changed with an oem brake pads, the problem went away. If the brake pad is not oem, that can also cause the fading. Moreover, I recommend upgrading to the ceramic brake pads if the car doesnt equipped.
Brilliant always enjoys your content 🔧🔧🔧
Ukraine War ? Agender 2030 smart city !!! under the rocker cover THANKS great video !
After watching this I Can almost forgive edd for the mini A panel in wheelie dealeras when he cut it in half 😅😅
Edd – with the GREATEST respect?
What must we do to help you to pronounce 'Porsche' properly?
You do not pronounce 'Chevrolet' as 'Chevrolette'.
Thus you are not against properly, pronouncing automotive names.
You apparently love Beetles.
Perhaps you should honour the creator of said Beetle by properly, pronouncing his name?
😉
Love your show.
Hi Paul.

Great f, ing episode 👌
