After James Gunn’s DCU has launched with Superman (2025), we are venturing back into the DC Studios canon with the movie that redefined comic book films—Batman (1989) directed by Tim Burton. This film stars Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice, Birdman) as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Jack Nicholson (The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) as the Joker, Kim Basinger (L.A. Confidential, 9 ½ Weeks) as Vicki Vale, Robert Wuhl (Arli$$, Good Morning, Vietnam) as Alexander Knox, Pat Hingle (Sudden Impact, The Quick and the Dead) as Commissioner Gordon, Billy Dee Williams (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) as Harvey Dent, and Michael Gough (The Age of Innocence) as Alfred Pennyworth. Some of the most iconic Batman (1989) scenes that still trend on YouTube include: “You Ever Dance with the Devil in the Pale Moonlight?”, Joker’s museum rampage, Batman’s dramatic Batmobile reveal, the Joker’s transformation scene, and the epic cathedral finale showdown. Classic quotes like “I’m Batman”, “Never rub another man’s rhubarb”, and of course, “You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?” remain fan favorites that helped define superhero cinema.
As we revisit this landmark film, it’s important to place it in the larger live-action Batman timeline: Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997), Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), The Batman (2022), and the upcoming DCU projects like The Brave and the Bold and Batman: Caped Crusader. This commentary explores how Burton’s gothic vision and Keaton’s performance laid the groundwork for everything from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy to Zack Snyder’s darker DCEU tone, and what it all means now that James Gunn is charting a bold new direction for DC Studios.

Opening night 15 years old and my comic shop owner bought out the theater and gave tickets to his customers. It was magical
YES! Johnny dangerously!!! I wanted to watch that the other day but couldn’t find it digitally
1:01:50 Well I think Vicki told Alfred that she knows (she figured it out after seeing the newspaper of Waynes' murders and put it all together) and he saw no point in hiding it.
Now you see why I have always said this is MY BATMAN!!! Everything about it makes it stands out from the current ones. I kind of hope Gunn takes this inspiration from Burton! PS I saw Batman & Robin in theaters for my 10th Birthday!
This is my Batman…Did you miss the cameo by Bob Kane?
This Batman is Number One for me!
Always was, always will be. Everything is so captivating.
I really enjoyed this, boys. It could have been labeled a reaction and that wouldve been fine…
I still remember watching the trailer in the theater way back in 1989, when the Joker first reveals himself onscreen. The audience went absolutely NUTS!!
If Greg doesn't watch Johnny Dangerously, at least get him to watch the Weird Al music video. and bonus… if you watch them both, Greg!
love the scene where Joker breaks the TV with the boxing glove hitting half of Dents face
This is actually dope. I went to the showing last week and it was hard to be quiet. It was so exciting to see this on the Big Screen 📺 13:45
Seeing this last week was like injecting my veins with life! The absolute quintessential Batman movie 🍿
Returns… Do it
fun fact ekkard is porkins the x wing pilot in starwars episode 4
The first time I saw this movie I was a 6 year old boy, and to this day every time I watch this movie I feel like that 6 year old boy again. From the Batmobile to the score, and the acting, this is still my favorite Batman.
Side note, please react to Johnny Dangerously. 😆
Batman 89 is a Batman movie kinda directed by Tim Burton. Batman Returns is a Tim Burton movie kinda featuring Batman 😏
Wayne Manor was Knebworth House in England.
This is a better Batman movie than "Returns", but "Returns" is a better movie on the whole, and one of Tim Burton's best.
Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, England is where the WAYNE manor mansion is located!
Bruce Wayne is a mixed martial artist, not a bodybuilder. He shouldn't be a 6'3" beefcake that can't throw a kick.
Michael Keaton is the size of a kickboxer, that's pretty much what Bruce should be.
I would love for Tim Burton to make the live-action adaptation of the animated series Gargoyle: On the Wings of Justice (1994). That would be cool.
If you guys are ever in Chicago, hit me up. I’ll go ride the original Batman coaster with you 🦇
I love the fact that Batman doesn't kill until he finds out the Joker killed his parents. After which, he starts killing off his goons to get to his prey. The reason Batman kills in this series is because it does get easier to do.
For me, this is neck to neck with The Dark Knight, Returns in second place, The Batman third place, Rises in fourth, Batman V Superman fifth, Begins Sixth.
Love when they light him in shadow. somehow light up his eyes perfectly while the rest of him being in shadow.
This film blew my mind as a kid. Imagine going from the Adam West TV show to this. It was the coolest thing in the world.
Loved this kind of reaction! Please do this more!!!
