Hello everyone! I received a question on my How I Use Dr. Bronner’s Soap video on where to find the expiration date on the bottle. I had no idea so I did some research and learned how to read the date code on the bottles of Dr. Bronner’s Soap — this applies to the 18-in-1 castile soap as well as Sal Suds. Hopefully, this video can help some of you!

The first set of 4 or 5 digits is the date code. On my bottle, my first set of digits is 18135, which means my bottle was filled in 2018, on the 135th day of the year (i.e., May 15, 2018).

If you have a 4 digit code, the first year represents the year the bottle was filled (e.g., 3165 means the bottle was filled in 2013). The last 3 digits represent the day of the year, counting from January 1st = 1 (e.g., 3165 means the bottle was filled on the 165th day of the year, which is June 14).

Here’s a link to a Julian Date Calendar for reference (you can also Google it): https://www.pps.noaa.gov/forms_guides/guides_aids_tools/julian-date-calendar.PDF

While the bottles do not specify an expiration date, the FAQ on the Dr. Bronner’s Soap website indicates: “In general, we recommend using Dr. Bronner’s body care products within three years of purchase. Soaps are self-preserving, but because our products are biodegradable, it’s best to not leave them on the shelf for too long, as they may start to lose strength.”

  1. Your video was so informative. It gave me confidence that the castile soap I purchased was fresh. Thanks so much!

  2. After looking at your vid I realized that my bottle is really old. How old I won't say, but more than 10 years. It doesn't smell any different and it certainly has not gone 'rancid'. However. I only use it for cleaning fine furniture before repairs and waxing, or a natural finish of oils and shellac. No problems so far, but I guess I ought to get some new product. I really had no idea so thanks!!

  3. do you feel like the soap got a smell now when its close to expiration date? I just got the tiny bottle and I use it for my face and its supposed to go over the date at the end of december, but its so weird it smells differently than my previous bottle, both were baby-mild.

  4. I'm finding that my soap is turning rancid in less than 2 years. So instead of buying in larger quantities (quart+), I'll be buying smaller bottles.

  5. Thank you for your video. It helps. Why can’t they just put the date on there for us? My bottle doesn’t even have numbers on it like yours does. I think I bought it about three or four years ago not sure. Now I’m going to toss it

  6. Well that is not very user friendly! it's also not helpful the the teeny tiny writing on their bottles are impossible to read without a high power magnifier! I'm thankful for your decoding on the date.

  7. Thank you for this! Found a great deal while shopping and wanted to make sure I didn’t buy more than I could use before expiring! 🙂
