There has always been a mixed opinion on the internet regarding Vaseline slugging. I have tried it multiple times on myself and also on my patients and I have been pleased with the results 9/10 times.
For those unaware, Vaseline slugging means applying a thin layer of Vaseline petroleum jelly on your whole face and neck.
How is it helpful?
Petrolatum (the main ingredient of Vaseline petroleum jelly) is an emollient. Such products form a coating on your skin and don’t dissolve in water, hence prevent water loss from your skin, keeping it hydrated. It might come as a surprise, but pure petroleum jelly is non comedogenic and doesn’t clog your pores.
So here are few do’s and don’t that will help you make the most of this easy and cheap skin care hack-
Do’s:
✨Use Vaseline blue seal original. Check the ingredient list, ut should say 100% petroleum jelly (and nothing more than that)
✨If you are trying to repair your skin barrier, use Vaseline to slug your face only for 3-5 days
✨If you have dry skin, you can use it more regularly as well. Make sure to use a cleansing oil to double cleanser daily at night. Prefer using a foaming cleanser at least 3-4 times a week.
✨Use it after a chemical peel to reduce skin irritation and flaking
Now here are a few things you should not do-
✨Do not layer any product before Vaseline. Petroleum jelly has comedogenic rating of ZERO but because it’s an occlusive, it can increase the comedogenic potential of other products. So wash your face thoroughly and straight up use Vaseline petroleum jelly.
✨Do not use Vaseline on your face if you have moderate to severe acne
✨Do not use if you already have milia.
✨Avoid using if you have comedonal acne or blackheads with an otherwise healthy skin barrier. You need exfoliants in this case and not Vaseline.
