The reason your hair was grimy after is because you didn't use it properly. It tells you to dilute for a reason, if you don't use it as directed obviously you won't get the desired results. Research this more before using
I got the same results as Sallyraggdoll and I did dilute the soap. Even on Dr Bronner's website it says people have problems just using the soap alone as shampoo. They suggest always using their Organic Shikakai Conditioning Rinse after shampooing with their soap.

Just to give you a heads up regarding using Dr. Bronner's as a shampoo. It is NOT to be used on color treated hair. None of their soaps are recommended for color treated hair. Sorry to be a finger wager here but you should really have checked out their website and read the directions for use as a shampoo. It says, right on the website, to not use on color treated hair as it will have a negative, chemical reaction. And i just want to point out that using any all natural shampoo is kinda of strange when you color your hair anyway. You can do it but you are already damaging your hair by coloring it. Embrace the beauty of your natural color. It's who you are naturally. You hair will shine if you let it.
I used it on my hair and my hair was MESS! lol it really sucked, I have super thick, long hair and a lot of it so it was just terrible!!! My hair was so tangled and greasy, it felt like I put glue in it.

Dr Bronner has a hair rinse ur supposed to use after the Castille soap. That may be why you didn't like it.
