After the release of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, fans were in love with the core gameplay of Metal Gear Solid V and itching for the full release. Fans would have to wait 18 long months, but eventually, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain would be released to the public. The game would be universally acclaimed, with many praising it for its varied mechanics, level of player freedom, open world design, cast performances and so much more. But now, it’s been 9 years since the game’s initial release, and I’m finally getting around to playing this game for the first time after hearing that it’s one of the best stealth games ever made for nearly a decade. So was all that praise really deserved? Well, let’s talk about it.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a 2015 action-adventure stealth video game developed and published by Konami. Directed, written, and designed by Hideo Kojima (as his final work at Konami), it is the ninth installment in the Metal Gear franchise, following Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, a stand-alone prologue released the previous year. Set in 1984, nine years after the events of Ground Zeroes, the story follows mercenary leader Punished “Venom” Snake as he ventures into Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the Angola–Zaire border region to exact revenge on those who destroyed his forces and came close to killing him during the climax of Ground Zeroes.

Making me wanna play it’s been a while
i hate that im watching this video series from end to beginning
I have nearly a thousand hours on MGSV, why? That free roam and soldier capturing made it that fun for me. FOBs and MGO played a very little role in that time as well 😅
Good video. Subbed. You have the same cadence as NileRed.
I didn't play MGS V tbh. I love Snake Eater but the whole Big Boss saga ruined MGS for me. Snake Eater was enough. MGS never really recovered after Snake Eater. MGS 4 was ok
It's not a narrative mess at all. Nearly everything is there. The gaps that exist are intentional and leave it up to an intelligent audience to fill in the blanks or use other game's stories as references for what happened. Keep in mind Medic/Venom is not Snake, so contextualizing the things that happen to him are difficult.
when you dont use (at all) an item you brought on a mission, it is refunded after mission i think. thats why you always run with full items, even if you dont anticipate using them. also, if you use them at all, you pay the full price
hey dude, nice video! you deserve a lot more!
The plague of video essays…
probably the best 3.50$ i spent
I'll never understand why you couldn't listen to the tapes when moving around in the field — I mean without people interrupting every 5 seconds… it would make perfect sense to listen to them while travelling between locations.
44:50 The game is actually deeper than that. If you always shoot the enemies with headshots, they'll start to wear helmets. If you always do your missions at night, they'll start to wear night vision goggles. It's not just that they get "better" equipment as you progress, they are literally responding to your play style in a really subtle and organic way. If you want to understand how deep the game is, the Piggyback game guide does a good job explaining these things.
I was put off by it being another prequel i didnt care about (im an mgs3 meh-er) and "snakes" voice not being hayter, and also hearing that the game was basically incomplete due to the drama between konami and kojima.
1:29:50 Why didn't you comment on the big reveal that Miller is blind? :-/ Bizarre (Not to mention how paranoid he's become — it's the beginning of the end for DD, and a sign that he's become "blinded by revenge".)
Dude…. You completely misunderstood the ending. Venom feels betrayed. Just like the player does. That’s why he punches the mirror. That’s why the song is The Man Who Sold the World. The legendary soldier went into hiding and used his own loyal man as a human shield. It’s a terrible betrayal of someone who believed in him. He literally steals his life! And Kojima spoke about how it was difficult to make the player feel they were the bad guy when they were playing as Big Boss. It disturbed him that nobody saw him as a villain in Peace Walker… because they justified his actions as the player. So with V he has Big Boss betray US. So we feel that pain. It’s a horrifically evil thing. And a genius twist. Why do you think he set it up that way?? If Venom was just going to go… “huh, ok” the why even have the twist for the player?
I'm interested in this game but I want to know if the HUD can be disabled completely? I really hate the x-ray vision, floating markers and the enemy tagging along with all the other hand holding HUD features. It feels very Ubisoft to me. Great video thank you!
Dude, your video is fire, and so is your channel. Subbing!
You asked a question: "why doesn't venom speak much?".
And then in the next couple minutes SKIPPED the answer.
The same reason he forgot foreign languages and now needs staff help.
YOU ARE TOLD THE REASON IN THE SAME CONVERSATION. This feels very strange.
I don’t know why, maybe it’s the lack of a strong narrative or the overreliance on audiologs but I found the entirety of MGSV to be pretty mid. Like, it was a good game, but after this and then Death Stranding I still fail to see why people hold Kojima in such high regard.
1:41:15 I got a McDonalds ad here lmfao.
Bro I love your content. However I have a small request. Please try to vary your voice variation. It will really enhance the way you deliver your videos.
Just finished the whole playlist and this was a fire series. Looking forward to your yakuza series now
0:50 oh boy….
Its supposed to be a mess.
Read 1984 and it makes more sense but you're not gonna like the answer and that's why most people ignore it.
There are levels to the lie.
The first lie is easy to spot.
The second lie is a good enough answer for most.
The lies go deeper.
For A Meddled & Unfinished Game By Konami…. Kojima Stayed Honorable & Him And His Team Did The Best That They Could.
Konami Lost Creatives, Respect & Solidity….Growth In The Treatment Of Kojima & His Group.
Playing through it right now, so far missions have been fun. Story is interesting. But the controls are very clunky and unresponsive for a stealth game. I keep getting stuck on objects and tiny elevations in the floor, and sometimes it pops me out of crouch and prone. Fun but very frustrating.
The game being incomplete actually makes it better for me
I loved this game! Unfortunately, I lost hope on beating that mission after saving Quiet and finally just gave up and haven't played it since. Didn't realize I was so close to the end of the game though.
You wouldn’t be chatty if you just woke up from a 9 year coma with all that shit happening.
"How many book references do you want in this game?"
"Yes."
I thought I noticed them all until I saw the audio tape was labeled doublethink
This is the most hyped I had ever been for a video game in my life. Got it just at the beginning of my junior year of college. Played it every day in September 2015, beating it by October. Amazing game that has its story potential cut short by Konami's terrible decisions. Never forgive them for that. Love MGS V
This game was the biggest ball drop to me. The narrative was just so hollow it really didn't feel like a mgs game. I loved mys 1-3 and when ended up really respecting 4
Have really enjoyed these reviews! As someone who has been playing and replaying these games all the way back since MGS came out for PS1 in 1998, it was a joy to watch someone experience the series in release order for the first time. I restarted my own replay of the series and am so stoked for Delta.
@notcole A fun fact is that when this game came out there was a buddy app you could set up on your IOS/Android device that worked as a live menu and you could do a plethora of stuff in real time without opening the menu in the game, i propped up a small samsung tablet i had during my first playthrough and would order supplies, get the lay of the land during loadings and a ton of information such as playing the tapes through either the dualshock or through the tablet, it also served as a support system for the FOB stuff, it was pretty forward thinking
such a dumb plan.. it wouldn't eliminate "language" just make everyone communicate by writing things down in their language
"You probably would recognize her"
bro I've been admiring the graphic and the cenematic of the prologue, an assassin face is the last thing I'm looking at
The up talk here? Is making this video? Unwatchable? And it's a shame? Because it's very interesting?
there's a theory that states that the psychic child created an illusion of the real Big Boss to help you out during the hospital, whenever he is "bound" to someone he takes on an aspect of their appearance, whether it be parts of him catching fire, getting Skull Face's mask or even Venom's horn, I can't really say all of the evidence but definitely look into it because it's a very cool theory
Wait wait wait, Big Boss doesn't become a villain, he is presented as one by the CIA just because he plays by his own rules and wants to be free from the control of governments. He is definitely not a villain, at least not more than Solid Snake is a villain by MGS4
Oh no, not me.I never lost control
I played all of it with a Steam controller. I don't know why.
If only Konami were not dicks and had let Kojima complete the game last chapter
31K deployment cost🤣
Lets just replace the Phantom Pain moniker into;
Gaslight, Gatekeep, Grind my Gears
Yeah hell man plagiarism
