  1. I love your analysis of Terra confronting the frozen esper- the portrayal of her as feeling isolated and distant from the rest of the party is something I never thought of before, but it rings as very accurate to me.

It's always been claimed that FFVII was when Square tried to take the series in a cinematic direction, but I think it only feels that way because of the move to 3D and the addition of pre-rendered FMVs. FFVI was, to me, the point where those ambitions really began to take shape, it's just that the technology wasn't there yet. No wonder why Square jumped right into 3D once it could and spurned the N64 in order to take advantage of the PS1's disc space.

  2. I don't have time to watch this whole video yet, but I kinda hope it addresses how Pixel Remaster cheaped out on animations – most notably (to me) when characters are running (particularly during the train fight), they're missing the frame where their other arm moves, so it looks like they're aggressively fapping instead of running.

  3. Calling the FF6 opera scene a flex is the most appropriate description ever. They didn't have to go THAT hard for that scene.

It was an important scene, yes, but for TWO characters. Which given the large cast, seems like all that energy would have been better spent else where.

I'm glad they did, of course, it's one of those memorable scenes and songs from gaming. And in a way, that scene was so powerful is elevated all the other parts of the game.

  4. Good job on this one!

    The end made me emotional!

The term "victory lap" is now echoing inside my head!

It makes me want to give it my best! I want to try my hardest!

  5. It's 2024 and people are still raving about and deeply analyzing this title.

FFVI is the kind of content that transcends time and grows up to be required reading in high school

  6. I’ve been waiting for this episode for so long and it did not disappoint. You’re great. Wonderful insight, well explained.

  7. Dan, your videos are a treasure.

I've been playing the Pixel Remasters, since it was about time I revisited Final Fantasy, and put on some videos in the background while auto-battling the random encounters, a lot of them about analyzing the early FF games. And it's incredible how succinct your videos are. Some of these videos go for hours, trying to in depth about various things, but the way you dissect the animation and the value it gives to both characters and storytelling really stands out to me.

  8. Awesome breakdown!! It's amazing how much they were able to do so much with so little. This might be a hot take, but FF6 should've gotten a remake before FF7

  9. I've thought for a long time they could make a great movie out of FF6. But as you point out at 3:29, they might need to do something about Setzer's storyline…

  10. Hey I had a suggestion for a video you could do and I personally would love to see it would probably be a longer video but you could do a Top ten best and worst animated movie video where you could talk about some of your personal favorite animated movies and talk about the wonderful and Not so wonderful animation of each movie just a thought love your content 😅

  11. On the latest Nextlander podcast there was a big shoutout for you channel!
    You’re doing the Lords work.

  12. If I could nitpick one thing in an otherwise incredible video: Mog’s battle entrance animation is not him waving to the camera. He’s actually flailing his arms in panic, like “oh shoot, enemies!”. You can even see little drops of sweat – manga code for nervousness.

  13. It’s difficult to express why FFVI is so good. Whatever I try to say, seems to never do the game justice. It is because of the insane amount of these small details that make it a masterpiece it is!

  14. Can you make a video on the game animation in College Football 25? The way they blend their animations and make them so reactive to player input is super interesting to me!

  15. I have a question, can you cover a game like Kirby or Ori. You mentioned it in your sonic video and it reminded me. Kirby also had his first official 3d installment around 2 years ago, so can you maybe talk about a Kirby game sometime?

  16. Hey! I think you’d love some of the animations and characters in Apex Legends! Would love to see you do a video similar to your Overwatch ones of their animations, select animations, heirlooms and all that and how it reflects their character/personality! Love your content keep it up🩷

  17. Until this series I had deeply underestimated the intricacy of these early pixel games. These deep dive videos are such a treat, seeing the evolution of the animation!

  18. Dude honestly you should be getting a PhD when you complete this series of videos. The amount of work it must have taken to accurately analyse all this animation is mind blowing to me

  19. I want to call out something you've seeningly done with editing in each intro for your own storytelling, moving from an orchestrared version of a song to the console rendition as you welcome us to the animation of Final Fantasy. Almost taking us from the modern YouTube medium back to the crt tv days. I may be over thinking it but its a clever touch of storytelling if that was the intention.

  20. How do you feel about the pixel remaster in the context of preserving/emulating the sprites and animations? I’m really eager to play FF6 and the pixel remaster is the easiest way for me to do that but I’m sometimes kind of a purist and find myself drawn to playing a patched version of the original for that reason

  21. I picked up Final Fantasy "Mystic Quest" and enjoyed the game for the story but to this day I barely remember any of the characters.

Final Fantasy III (VI) had me glued to the screen as a kid. It was quirky and funny, and deep as all get out. I cared about all these characters and what happened to them.

The whole time watching this I was listening to the music, and was just instantly back in time. I highly recommend everyone find Uematsu and any other covers of these songs, they hold up amazingly.

  22. Final Fantasy 6 is the first game ever to make me want to look at the sprites themselves outside of the game, they're just filled with so much character and passion

  23. I've been playing this game for literally 30 years, and it's still close to my heart. In fact, I'm playing it right now. Excellent analysis!
