It’s time. I’ve never played Devil May Cry 5 and in fact I haven’t played any DMC games since the original when it first came out. I’m very eager to hear this music in context and explore some of the dark gothic qualities that are pervasive in the games OST.

YES!!! new playthrough from the best dood ever!
Such a Good Game and Such a Good Soundtrack
I shall Watch your DMC 5 Carrer with Great Interest
DMC franchise is definitely a game that has top quality story (they branch out to manga as well as anime adaptation so it's hard to follow it traditionally, for the full story on it I suggest watching a YT vid of the full timeline analysis since the music of each character's themes reflect not only their personality, but also what they've been through thus far), visuals, and music most of all
I hope you have fun playing the game!
I certainly hope you'll manage to get your style high enough to actually hear most of the music.
I died at this part 4:19
This is so weird in so many ways. ^^
First: When you know the manga, accompanying this game, and thus know the whole backstory from V, that unfortunately is not shown in the game, than it is so weird watching V, kind of without any context. (The manga explains really a lot. why he is there, why he wears that funny clothes. why he travels with those animals and so on)
Second: Watching you, playing DMC5, but wothout knowing DMC3 and 4 is funny too.
All the cool characters are here, and you are like: "who the hell is this?" 😀
I hope you keep playing. Also I reccoment DMC3 A LOT !
seeing marco's character development of learning combos is so fun to watch and is an awesome bonus to the musical pointers lol
9:58 I never realized, that NEro was like "Ok, I don´t care too much." with all those innocent, killed people in front of his eyes. 😀
I really love your commentary, I hope you do more playthroughs of dmc
Perfect timing. Sitting in the train home. Also I’m going to a metal concert this weekend! So hyped.
Also: thanks for playing this, subhuman favorite song ever, in my favorites list it’s right in front of Bury the Light
Oh boy, can't wait for more :DDD
Ok This Is my Terrain! Be ready for an unnecessarily Long comment
– The DMC 5 Menu Theme Is actually a recreation of a classic Capcom Jingle that sounds in many classic Games, you can find It as "Capcom SNES Logo Intro" on YT
— The first Theme with the violin and the organ is called "The Qliphoth"
— And even if i'm you will get It later on the videos, the leitmotif of This game spreads through many Themes in Very Different ways, i love the variety
— Enjoy the wha-
— "Dance Macabre." Aka Best move in the series
— Those ladies are Trish and… Lady, yeah.
SPOILERS
Trish is the co-protagonist from DMC 1, a demon that resembles Dante's Mother and was Created by the Demon Emperor Mundus, the same that Killed Dante's Mother. She was Created to lure Dante into a Trap in a place called "Mallet Island", to kill him. Trish tried to kill Dante, but Dante saved her at some Point due to her have the look of her Mother. After defeating Mundus, Trish escapes alongside Dante from the Island, and they became some kind of partners fighting demons
A lil' bit about Dante
Dante Is the son of the legendary Dark Knight Sparda, a demon who revealed against It's own kind to protect humanity, and His Mother was called Eva, a human. Dante also had a brother; Vergil. Dante has a demon hunting Business called "Devil May Cry", and even if he Works for money, at the end Is just a facade to protect humanity, It Is known that Dante sometimes takes jobs Without charging it's customer.
And now Lady
Lady Is a human, but His father, Arkham, was someone who sacrificed His own wife (Lady's mom) to get demonic power, Lady (Originally called Mary) became a Demon Hunter specialized on Heavy Artillery and Handguns just to hunt Arkham, who alongside Dante's brother, unleashed a Legendary demonic tower called "The Temen-ni-gru.", Which was the entrance to the Underworld where Sparda sealed it's power in the form of a Sword
Lady was a rival for Dante, kind of, but at the end of the day, and after both losing a beloved one (Arkham and Vergil) they became good friends
Also Dante owes her a lot of money heheheh-
There's a video about DMC's history in the game itself
– And the protagonist that you're Using; Nero
Btw you can Win during the prologue
Nero was part of a religious group of royal knights called "The Order of the Sword", a group that, even when he didn't followed their beliefs, was a religion who worships Sparda as a God, but Also their leader, Sanctus, wanted to rule the World as a God. Nero has demonic power too, he and Dante stopped their plans, and in this Story, Nero found the Yamato, the Sword that used Dante's brother, and he Let Nero keep the Sword after that, It was in good hands- O H
Ok let's move
— That Sword that Dante lost was the Sword that he used since the second game; Rebellion, one of the most iconic swords in the series
– "How It feels to rescue the Man who Killed your father?"
Nico, the lady in the van Is the daughter of Agnus, the Order of the sword's Alchemist / scientist, a character from the 4th game. And at the same Time, Nico's gradmother was called Neil Goldstein, the woman who Created Dante's handguns in a prequel novel from the first game, and This detail was revealed first in DMC 5 Novel "Before the Nightmare"
– Devil Trigger Is an Anthem for the series, 11 Y E A R S of waiting for This game, AND IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT
– The version that sounds during the Mission one Is called "Devil Trigger – Devil shocker Remix" if i'm not wrong
– The Soldier Boy / Crewcut boy Is voiced by Patrick Seitz aka Scorpion from MK, he voiced the History Of DMC for the official YT channel
— Try to rev your sword after every swing / attack, the Rev thing Is the Special Gimmick of Nero's Red Queen Sword, you can Boost your attacks' power hitting the correct timing
– Again, Yamato Is Dante's brother's Sword, a Sword capable of separarte Light and Darkness, handled by Dante's father in the past, and the one that he got in the 4th game
– Nero's arm looked like that because that was where his demonic power emerged after a demon incident, that arm was calld the Devil Bringer, and was His source of power.
More character info :^)
– Morrison Is a good friend, and the Man who gives job to Dante, and a character with a good Spotlight in the anime
– Nico's Theme is wonderful. And One of my favorites, and, not right now, but please compare the tropical remixes of Devil Trigger and Any Special orders (That's the name of Nico's Theme)
– Technically, in-game This place Is called "Redgrave City." Yeah, Redgrave, like Tony Redgrave
– DMC 5 was the first game in the series that used dynamic music, the better you Play, you Will reach the "Boom" part of the music.
– There's 12 secret missions through the game. Every single one of them gives you a Blue Orb, There's also hidden Blue orbs through the game, you need 4 to extend your Health bar, in the part with the hole on the Floor there was a Blue Orb
– During Development, they considered the van a character by itself. They also called her "Van-Chan", you Will ove every entrance
BUT DON'T LEAVE IT AT THAT POIIIINT
Ok i love This, hope to see More in the near future! Love you Marco.
Also Vergil is playable too but as a DLC, will you play him too? 😀
XDDDD, the effects your editor puts are amazing
I loved playing this game cuz it’s really fun honestly.
And the music is definitely interesting in my opinion.
My favorite game is on my favorite channel!! What can be better
I like your music analysis a lot but when you actually sit down and play the game that a song is from and knowing the context then it's even more entertaining and interesting to hear your thoughts on it. Hope you keep playing games because it's really fun to watch!
13:27 just noticed that sticker with Trish in Devil May Cry sign pose
OH MY GOD! So excited for this.
The setting of DMC is strange. All the characters have American accents, but the settings are a mix of different European countries. Mostly Italy, with tiny bits of the Americas mixed in.
i watch you from argentina , and i´m so happy you start playing this game , love the way you edit the video it makes me laugh so much , good luck and hope you finish the game .
The different combos are done by delaying certain parts of the sequence. You do have to unlock some of them though. It’s a pretty normal thing to not pick up on though
Now i wanna replay. Love this franchise, man!
Nero has so much growth in this game!
One thing to note, since DMC 4, the music gets stronger the better your rank.
And, since dmc3, the choreography has been done both in person and with miniatures to try and make everything feel as real as possible. Love the stylish visceral cutscenes. Also, everyone sucks on their first few hours of DMC. Keep rockin'!
Best people have guessed, Redgrave is either on a coast, or near a large lake in the States.
I know I'm not watching a live stream, but i still catch myself screaming like I'm watching my streamer brother. The red clumps scattered around give you more red orbs
I really love this game and I'm exited to hear your opinions and analisis about the music and the game itself
A little advise I have, if you use the arm while aiming, you'll get close to the enemy, or get them close to you, if you use the arm without aiming you'll use its "power", and if you hold it down a little bit you'll do an atack that will do masive damage and break it in the process.
Have fun experiencing this game
24:40
Lots of European style urban architecture throughout the game. But much of missions 2 through 7 looks like it's inspired by London and other UK cities. The first half of Mission 2 itself looks very much like Piccadilly Circus and the London WestEnd
Knowledge trivia on the name Qliphoth (correct me if i'm wrong on some things, i'm writing this down based on memory) :
In the Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism, there is this… system of interconnected concepts that, to my understanding, is like the engine of existence itself: Mystical emanations that bring forth existence as we know it, originating from the Lord– and which in turn, keeps it so that virtue exists. A kind of Perpetuum Mobile of virtue and goodness.
The concepts in question are known as the Sefirot/Sephiroth, and are oft represented in a schematic or diagram referred to as the "Tree of Life".
If i remember correctly, all of the Sefirot are positive aspects of humanity and represent different things: Masculinity, Feminininty, Creativity, Strength, Wisdom, sometimes a mix of things. And I think I remember reading somewhere that for humans to grow closer to Divinity and true goodness, they have kind of personal spiritual roads to "climb up" the Sefirot as it were.
On the opposite end of the Sefirot, are Qliphoth– opposites of the virtues and positivity that bring forth existence and keep the mortal being tethered to negativity and suffering.
Nidhogg is a name one might be more familiar with, especially more recently thanks to GoW: Ragnarok. Nidhögg is a dragon that gnaws on the roots of the World Tree from Nordic mythology– so in terms of mythological theme naming and connections, it's a pretty perfect name for a parasite that gnaws on legendary tree matter.
I sadly don't know what Antenora means, nor what the name idea behind the Caina was– most direct association I can make is with Cain, the First Murderer. Which would probably check out.
The Caina seem to be a variant of the Seven Hells enemies from DMC3, though I don't know if those were wearing a spiked/thorn crow as well. Considering they're wielding scythes, my mind made an association with Dante from the game Dante's Inferno.
(Which, fun fact, as the name suggests is loosely based on the Divine Comedy, which DMC also takes various themes and character names from– but the gameplay is much more like GoW, which came out after DMC. Interesting how things can loop back on themselves like this.)
I am in NO WAY an authority on this field, and my words here are just my understanding of it. The Kabbalah, Sefirot and Qliphot are very complex things and I guarantee to you that I have misinterpreted some things.
So, I recommend to anyone reading this, if this subject has caught their interest: Do your own research, and be critical of, and compare, sources.
Also Empusa's some kind of Greek vampiric hag or summin'. I believe she had claws made of copper.
And Urizen is a name from one of the works of a writer by name of… William Blake, I believe. I know next to nothing about that feller's works, other than that V keeps reading from one of his books.
Vaguest thing that I think I remember, is that Urizen is part of a certain group of people
siblings, perhapsand Urizen has some associations with notions of power and/or strength.*DISCLAIMER that i've repeated a few times before: I could be unintentionally Bovinely Manuring about this info, based on very vague memories and recollections, from times when I just came across certain pieces of info and did more research on it– but haven't professionally or academically researched.
More so for fun.
Which is also why I write this comment, and perhaps more unless asked not to do so anymore. I find it fun to share this knowledge and hope that others may find it interesting as well.
Wish you fun on the rest of the playthrough!
I recently played this game. Read a steam review saying "stop reading reviews and play it, there are two people in this world those who played DMC5 and loved it and those who missed out." he was so right.
Also apologies in advanced for your finger's medical bills. Once you realize you need to hold down like 4 buttons at once to play Nero your brain sorta melts but you keep telling yourself your okay because of the cool music and combos you can do.
Word of advice, play around with controller layouts.
The first 10 seconds gave me a hostage video vibes. Blink 4 times if you're in danger Marco!
dont sweat it too much this game and its combo system takes time to learn and its the first two missions. the more you play the better youll be. also there is an auto assist setting if you want the extra help. i believe you activate and deactivate it holding either the left OR thr right joystick down cant remember which one it is exactly though. regardless this is a very fun game so dont worry about doing good and just have fun.
SHIDDD!1!11!!1!1!!!! THIS PARTYS GETTING CRAZY LETS ROCK!!!1!1!1!1!1!
One of my favourite games of all time. This game is pure fanservice for old Devil May Cry Fan. Not only the music is banger, but it has one of the best combat systems I've ever seen.
As a fan of the series, i fill obligated to clarifay one of the main mechanics for Nero. If you press LT in specific timing after attack, this will charge up Nero's sword and make next attack faster and deal more damage. And you can chain this revs as long as you get the timing right. You can also charge up the sword out of combat by pressing LT multiple times, untill you get full charge
You have to play Hi-FI Rush!
My favorite game! I can't wait to see the rest of this playthrough
You're going to love this game!!!
Edit: To add, if you listen to Crimson Cloud outside of the game edit, the big reveal at the climax will be spoiled.
you should do doom eternal next
Is this your first DMC game that you played? I highly recommend the other games as well (stay clear of the offshoot though). Don't worry about your skills, you will definitely get better with time. DMC 5's combat is very fluid and fun so just enjoy it. 🙂
you and your editor are so good together 😭
OHHHHHHH HERE WE GO FAM IT'S GO TIME!!!! I am so ridiculously hyped for this, DMC is one of my favorite series from style, design, and music. It's such a fun set of games, so I'm really looking forward to watching this playthrough! The music in this one is on point!
So DMC always has a move where you dash towards an enemy and attack. It's a very powerful and basic move (I think Nero's is called Streak) and for some reason you always have to buy it. It gives you a ton of mobility in combat and avoids those situations where you're swinging just little too far away from the enemy.
Between Devil Trigger and Bury the light these two have become "in my car cruising home from work blasting it" songs.
It makes me laugh that when you suddenly encounter a threat, your reaction is to scream AHHHHHH to the threat, you just enter "opera mode" anyway great video and don't worry if you continue to play you will obviously get better at the game !
Marco now let's player? Lets go!
Yeah bb! That's what I've waiting for! That's what it's all about! Woooohoooo!!!
Btw, I'm sure you've received this comment 100 times by now, but you're missing like, ALL the red orbs
Definitely use your grab ability for better combos, and to clear the distance between you and an enemy faster
Everyone starts off this way, you’ll get better the longer you play!
