I've heard Hot Cocoa and Hot Chocolate are two different drinks. Originally how I knew it, one was made with hot water, the other was made with hot milk. I can't remember which one is which. I think cocoa = milk, chocolate = water, but it could be flipped.
HOWEVER I recently learned it might be because of the form of chocolate instead. Hot Chocolate is made melting actual chocolate; crushed, slivered, shavings, or chunks of chocolate that melt quickly into hot water/milk/cream. Hot Cocoa is made with cocoa powder, sugar, and milk making it light and airy.
I call it hot chocolate

(Also, here in Germany it's usually only "officially" hot chocolate if you melt actual chocolate pieces to make it – if you use powder it's hot cocoa. Though there is hot chocolate powder you can buy, so most people I know just go by texture: Cocoa is thin/liquid-y, hot chocolate is more creamy/thicker, it can even be almost pudding-adjacent if it's really thick (my personal fave). 🍫☕)

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the difference between hot chocolate and hot coco is that hot chocolate is made with milk, and hot coco is made with water!
Somewhat hilariously, this came out on Boxing Day in Australia so the double ending works rather well.
Hot cocoa, only because i have a soeach impediment and "ch" has always been a hard sound for me, my whole family (my kids included) call it "hot chocolate"
To me hot chocolate and cocoa are two different things. Hot chocolate is when I melt down actual chocolate in milk. Hot cocoa is when I mix the drink powder with milk. 😀
