If anyone is saying Jins voice sounds familiar in the sub. Its probably because the voice actor is the same one who voiced Zoro from One Peace for the sub aswell.
Also for context with the deer. In old Japanese culture it was religiously, looked down upon and against Japanese law to hunt deer. That's why the deer was initially wasnt afraid. Because people wouldn't hunt them. Also probably the same reasons why Jin didn't take the hide.

It's nice you play in Japanese and that you had the exact same reaction to the voice actors, Hijikata from Gintama was my first reaction to the voice actor on my 1st playthrough, about the same time you started. We also eat horse where i'm from and apparently it took me 20 years to learn that it was not "normal" everywhere ^^'
You say reasonable comment on assassin's creed set in japan, but you say the Devloper should have played this game, but they say they took great inspiration from it. It just does not show. And for a franchise that has some of the best video game Historians, it seems they are great with western history only.

I have completed 100% of the game and the best part was just exploring the map of Tsushima and doing all the side quests. I never got bored of listening to the music and enjoying the beauty of the scenery as I rode my horse.

Fun note about the armors: none of them are "better" than the others. They all have different uses (except for the broken armor). The two you have at the start here have two very different purposes. The traveller attire is for exploring and finding new things. The Hero armor increases your health and attack in battle. Later on you'll get things like the Ronin armor, which lets you you sneak better in high grass. Experiment with all of them, none of them are cheating 🙂
Edit: Interesting that all the story script says "Way of Jin." I'd never picked up that the characters are always the same since I don't speak or read Japanese.

I'm Brazilian and I'm really curious to learn more of the Japanese culture as soon as I started to play this game. By the way, apoken english felt really awkward. I decided to play it in Japanese with English subtitles so the experience was really really complete.
The motion capture is for the english so I know its off in Japanese but man for me Japanese with English subtitles is the ONLY way to go. When a Samurai shouts, I need to hear it in Japanese, haha. From listening to the Japanese language though I feel like tone, cadence, and volume are utilized as part of the language more so than in English so I always feel like something is "lost in translation". I also think Jin's dad has a really cool sounding name that I actually hadn't seen before, Kazumasa.

Jin's Japanese VA is actually the guy who plays Zoro in One Piece, so they went all out with the casting.
the folks who made this game really put the extra effort in, there are lots of 'Japanese-inspired' games that don't get even close to how hard this game works to present a vision of Japan that feels genuine
For some reason I always picked the Japanese dub over English. It just fits better when playing a samurai game.

A tip:
When exploring, try to stay on the roads. You'll find that the Mongols will have supply wagons guarded by three to four Mongols. You're going to upgrade your weapons and armor quicker.
I tend to play using Japanese voices mostly, but I like both options and there are pros and cons to each. To me they even change the characters a bit, especially Jin.
Back in 2020 when I first played it the official subreddit had a thing for telling everyone to use Japanese audio as if it was the only correct choice, and I said I felt some of the Japanese voices did sound a bit “anime” and exaggerated sometimes, which changed the mood for me. The English VO to my ears at least felt a bit more candid and less theatrical.
I got pounced on and buried for that take. So in hearing your very initial reaction saying Yuna’s VO felt a bit exaggerated made me feel a bit vindicated.
I think many in the West only hear Japanese voices from anime and fictional characters, rather than in day to day normal conversation from normal people.
That’s not to say the Japanese VO is a bad thing. It’s movie stylised after all. My point is English VO is also worth a play-through to get (for me) a different feel of the characters.
I’m not Japanese but have lived in Japan for a few years now, and people don’t speak like anime characters, just as Americans don’t speak like Hollywood hero characters.
I think the background NPC chatter in places like the Golden Temple area really do sound a lot more like natural everyday speakers, even though I only understand a small fraction of what they’re saying, the intonation and stress in their voices sound about right to me on a gut-feeling level.
I love this game and have probably had about 5-6 full 100% play-throughs over the years, with only 2 early on using English VO.

Idk y every English speaking person's say play in Japanese… Reading subtitles sucks, you miss out on what's going on reading the bottom of the screen.
You can lock on to enemies,check the controls.
For me the only draw back of the Japanese audio is that the motion capture of the actors' faces was done in English, so there's noticeable lip sync issues, the inverse of watching Japanese movies translated to English.
I tried to play the game with the black and white filter and Japanese audio, but noticing the different blue and red glints on enemy weapons in the heat of battle was a bit too hard.
i do think the english speaking actors are better at conveying emotions better than with the japanese dub actors
