Metal Gear Solid 5: "I'm Afraid It's Been NINE YEARS"

Few franchises spark debate and conversation to the degree that Metal Gear does, but even within the series, no game has done that quite the way that Metal Gear Solid 5 did.

A lot of that was obviously by design, what with its open world structure and its new approach to storytelling that took so many longtime series fans by surprise, but a lot of Metal Gear Solid 5’s controversy came not from the game, but from the circumstances surrounding it.

Hideo Kojima left Konami under acrimonious circumstances shortly after development wrapped up, which capped off what had already been a long and eventful development cycle. Here, we’re going to talk about all of that and more, as we discuss the reveal, development, launch, and more for Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain.

  1. I mean, technically there's a significant and lore-heavy reason david hayter doesn't voice THIS version of big boss as well tho. But that's a spoiler.

  2. Ah yes the good MGS game… It and 3.
This was my favorite FarCry like game I just wish the buddy system allowed for coop.

  3. Best visuals-to-performance ratio of any graphics engine to date. Remember this even ran on X360 & PS3….

  4. I'm a Massive MGS fan – favourite franchise but I remember when this game was in development & there was a whole reddit surrounding the story of MGS5 from a trailer, few cryptic Kojima tweets, Moby Dick, Ishmael & Ahab references from trailers & they pretty much summed up the twist in the storyline & I thought no way thats the story its way too far out there… Then behold, they were right & I was completely wrong, lol.. This was probably over a year before the release – i'll never forget that. Then knowing the twist & after the heli crash theres a POV shot of 'you' on a table looking at Snake on the Table next to you was so smart… Such a shame we wont get a game focused on the twin snakes between 5 & MGS1 imo 😢. Playing Death Stranding was great in all but made me realise what we're missing…

  5. It was "deeply flawed", but then you failed to support this claim, other than stating it has some narrative issues. I really don't understand.

  6. The lack of a fulfilling story, half finished gameplay ideas, repeating missions throughout the game to flesh it out as filler and a bland open world just killed the game for me. It's one of my most disappointing gaming experiences ever! Best stealth game ever is a poor assessment lol

  7. Woke up from the coma.

    Saw Concord and Dustborn.
Saw no games that have any females as hot as QUIET.
Missed Quiet, Sniper Wolf, Eva, and Meryl.

    Go back to coma.

  8. Too many lames that can't even play the game properly complained about the long cutscenes so they shortened them. But still a dope game

  9. …saying phantom pain fills in a lot of the blankets is actually a lie lol, it didn’t answer a lot of stuff, left more plot holes, and had some retcons that created more questions than answers…

  10. Would been cool if we could had a chance to see Snake when he was young

  11. Ohhhhh what this game could have been . Don’t get me wrong the first half of the game is great and the game play is still some of the best out there . But if you watch the docs on what HK wanted to do , it would have been amazing . I do see Konami wanting to start seeing a return on its investment, but they absolutely should have given him the time and budget to accomplish it (and cancelled the 360/ps3 versions )

  12. Still the best gameplay a game has ever had. The stuff you can do makes you feel like you fully control snake and not in a videogame

  13. I remember renting the game on a videoclub for 2€ and playing it the whole weekend on my PS3 together with my brother❤

  14. Nothing against David Hayter, but as an adult looking back, his voicework as Snake is a bit over-the-top and ridiculous. It's never sounded authentic to me. When I listen to Snake talk in MGS 1, 2, 3, or 4, I just imagine some guy standing in a studio booth, in front of a microphone, doing a fake voice into the mic. It just sounds silly and cartoonish to me. Even though Hayter was iconic as Snake to English speaking gamers, I can understand why Kojima was unsatisfied with Hayter's portrayal of Snake and wanted to replace him early on. It's all personal opinion of course, but when I listen to his Snake voice now, it really doesn't sound good to me.

  15. it wasn't perfect, it was unfinished in many ways, it wasn't even the best game of the franchise… but hell, i've never been hyped by any other game ever since and no other game truly changed my life as this one did 9 years later

  16. One thing i will never get over is fans compulsive need to meat ride david hayter and protest anyone else playing Snake depsite him being the worst possible choice.

  17. “There’s absolutely no denying that MGSV does have a litany of storytelling issues but if what you’re looking for is pure narrative material, the game is brimming with it.”
Gobbledygook sentence. Turn in your English degree to the nearest trash receptacle. May God have mercy on your soul.

  18. “Masterpiece”, absolutely hilarious, MGSV was TRASH and a disgrace to Metal Gear Solid. That abomination shall forever be forgotten.

  19. As a huge MGS fan, this game just seems like bland filler in terms of the story. This is the only game I haven't completed, or even got into.

…I think i need to ignore the story and just enjoy the gameplay. That seems to be the genius of it. I guess it makes sense, as MGS4 wrapped up everything nicely. Maybe I should give this another chance.

  20. If Delta is a success I’d be well up for a V remake with all the rough edges rounded off with any additional gameplay bits added/reinserted (enemy dogs). Imagine those environments in Unreal 5 (nanite). I’d even be up for narrative liberties taken. F**k it. Get Hayter to write it he’s a screenwriter 😂

  21. I'm playing this game on ally x at max settings and it looks better than most games released in last year or so. Not to mention, in docked mode, my fps are locked at 60. This engine is the prime example of optimisation.

  22. They moved the cinematically to in game and it still was bloated and way too long that you were locked in at points

  23. MGSV is the best game in the series while simultaneously being the worst Metal Gear game in the series.
