I am not sure I would call this a glitch. I think it is an undocumented, designed in, method for farming purple coils. What makes me think this?
If the have the two companions fight the machine convoy with you, then after the fight is over, they go and stand on a flat rock waiting for you to talk to them to finish the mission. If you do your looting and then go run around the tree to trigger a respawn, they will leave the rock and follow you. Chase after you. As if the Devs are saying, hey wait, don't leave, you need to talk to them. When you return to do the second loot, and then again go run around the tree, they will not follow and just patiently wait on the flat rock during all subsequent loot loop runs. The Devs are saying, okay we now know that you know you need to talk to them, you are just doing the designed in coil farm setup.
It's quicker if you use your mount to travel to and from the farm site. Also, the shellwalkers occasionally have purple mods, so look for the purple diamond as you swing by. Another bonus is that if you're mounted, you will regularly clobber the game there, even without trying to, because the terrain geography is so narrow, picking up meat, skin and bones from foxes, rats, rabbits, turkey, boar, geese and very occasionally from racoon. It's an excellent farm for all sorts of material.
Arktix mentions that you need to choose hunting alone when you speak to the 2 hunters. Not sure why, but it might be good to add that to the description.
