Hello game designers,
The combat in Ghost of Tsushima is looking awesome! But I think you shouldn't be satisfied with the progress, yet, and continue to improve.
Where I believe the game could be done better right now is the programming of the a.i. players, so that more of them – 3 to 4 – attack the player at about the same time. Maybe 5 or more of them could attack the player, depending on the skill settings of the a.i. players.
This has many benefits right now that I could see. One is that the combat system of the player will be improved right away. This is because encountering multiplayer opponents will show the needs for certain techniques that might not be obvious at the moment. The correction of certain button and directional pad combination will be come obvious, so that techniques, such as counter attacks, defensive maneuvers could be done much easier and more intuitively.
The camera systems will also improve because of this. Therefore, I suggest that the a.i. players should be programmed to come at the player in groups of 3 or more. Some times 3, other times 4, 5, 6, and more.
Update: Got some ideas for the camera systems: Create several camera movement styles that can be selected by the players:
1. Default.
Basically, that's the camera angles seen in this video up to around 1:30 something.
2. Hollywood-Hong-Kong Hybrid
The Matrix, for example. That's the camera techniques used for the various fight scenes from part 1 of the trilogy.
3. Hong Kong.
90's era martial art films, such as Kung Fu Cult Master, Swordsman 2, Master of Tai Chi.
I'm sure the film experts already know what I might be referring to, but just in case they don't, basically the way this works is that the camera angles and styles used in these genres will become presets.
Let's say when an a.i. character attacks, such as the jumping sword attack at 1:24 in this video, instead of the camera being side way, it will have a smooth elliptical movement (if the presets is Hollywood-Hong-Kong Hybrid), or it will have a quick angle cut (if the presets is Hong Kong, 70's and 80's era).
Comments regarding the camera techniques.
At around 1:30 in the video, when the horse rider accelerated, I like how the camera zoomed forward a bit to show the acceleration. That is a really nice touch. That's a really great technique that should be kept as one of the standards, in my opinion.
At around 1:34, the motion blur effect does not seem necessary, at least to me. It could be tried at 1:30, but I personally prefer the cleaner-looking camera zoom technique. The motion blur effect might be best used when a character shoots an arrow or throw a projectile, and the camera follows the path of the projectile, similarly to that scene in that 90's film Robin Hood. It looks best for that purpose, in my opinion.
For showing the impact of the horse charge, maybe you could try doing the double or triple zoom, similar to the one at 1:30, and focus at where the impact is. I believe that will look simple yet very awesome.
Comments regarding the speed of the game:
It would look much more realistic if the speed was more like films, so 0.90 of the current speed in this video would be better, in my opinion, because the movements are easier to see. Also, video speed is different than character's speed. Video speed is universal, where as character's speed is specific to certain characters. The video speed should have a standard. The character's speed could be different for different characters.
As to recreating the appearance of martial art films with the video frame rates, I believe this needs to be done with the help of someone who has real experience with those classical style of cinema, plus modern knowledge of how digital film works, so that the same looks can be recreated with the precise settings. This would be better than trying to do guess works, which could happen, but then the results won't be 100% like the original.
