Elden Ring is not the only Souls game that featured some controversies… back in the day, Dark Souls 2 was heavily panned due to some design choices and mechanics, which made PvE and PvP kind of hated in the community. Ranni the Witch tells you all about it!

  1. i had done a run through this series very recently. i didn't dislike Dark souls 2 as much this time around. in order, my favorites are Bloodborne, dark souls 3, dark souls 1 dark souls 2 demon souls, Sekiro, and elden ring. not the best list in comparison to everyone"s, but it's mine. i love this series. i got into it, and so did my brother back in 2011. we've been into Fromsoft since then, and have been Revisting older games by them including Kuon, and metal wolf chaos . looking forward to future games by these developers

  2. I played Dark Souls 2 for like 9 hours, after playing every other Souls game, and I just could not bring myself to like it. It felt so off compared to everything else..

  3. I think anybody who hates DS2 played DS1 first because it just feels like a downgrade from the first one. It’s not a bad game but what’s the point of a sequel if it feels worse.

  4. Just finished DS2 for the first time last week. It definitely has it's issues, but the genuine hate isn't warranted. It's pretty good as a sequel imo

  5. "Dark Souls 2 has great mechanics once you got used to them" yeah every game has a learning curve. It doesn't change the fact that everything else is DS1, except with impact triggered backstabs

  6. Dark Souls II did a lot of things wrong and Scholars of the First Sin made the game worse but it still had a lot of pros:

-best soundtrack, more varied music with some calm serene music and not just all hypergothic epicness all the time
-best pvp prior to elden ring
-very atmospheric, with some really beautiful environments (though some locations look like shit too, very hit and miss in this regard)
-less overdone in terms of the style of its graphics, not everything is amped up to the max with epicness all the time like in DS3 and Elden Ring where everything from locations to armor and weapons are generally kind of overdesigned, in DS2 there's more variation in this regard
    -best hub area by far
-npc's you care about whose stories and quests you get to follow naturally as you progress throughout the game without the need to look at a wiki
-rolls still cost stamina and cannot be mindlessly spammed like in ds3 and elden ring, why they changed this is mind boggling to me, rolls are way too fucking good in ds3 and elden ring and it really simplifies and dumbs down their combat both in pvp and pve and it looks fucking stupid too

  7. Dark Souls 2 PvP is still the best PvP out of all souls games, it can't be topped and I miss playing it so much. I was disappointed when a lot of the mechanics were never brought into another DS game since. Dual-wielding? Effectively gone save for unique weapons and must have the same weapon type, no estus healing during PvP? Well good luck defeating the host who can chug 1 billion gallons of Sunny D. The thing I missed the most was invading solo players from the get go. Sure Elden Ring has something similar to that but the item also removes the invasion timer to 0 which makes you susceptible to many invaders at once.

Then there are the PvP builds, man did I love how you can be so strong if you focused on one thing. There was an abundance of everything here too, items, weapons, enemies (which turned into the enemies ganking you more often than not) spells, I can go on. Dark Souls 2 ruined PvP for me since it was amazing at any level and I've been trying to get that same high ever since but to no avail. It's such a unique game which made so many people to avoid it but I think the charm was for it to be different, FS tried out so many different ideas and that's what I love the most.

    Also Majula theme is GOATED.

  8. Everyone? Not really. Nowadays the people complaining about it are mostly the BB fans who started with BB and expected all FS games to be like BB, hence also why they like DS3 so much. Back then the game was criticized by overhyped fans for its lacking lighting quality, and in that case rightfully so. Oh yeah, and soul memory. SM was a legitimately terrible and obnoxious mechanic if you wanted to do ANY meaningful amount of PvP. It was so bad they later added a ring that completely negated it.
And as for healing animation, you're literally showing multiple times the literal examples of literally why it was made like that: to punish estus chugging in PvP and to give invaders more chance since they can't use it at all. That's also why estus heals were now more over time and not almost instant as they were in DS1. And honestly that was one of the major things that made PvP so good and fair, especially compared to later games.
My first Souls game was DS1, but I didn't finish it until I finished DS2. Overall I'd still consider DS1 the best FS game they've ever made to this very day, with DS and DS2 being very close seconds. But if we're talking just mechanically, then DS2 is by far the best. I hate everything about their post-BB poise-less jelly-boned gameplay and spastic combat.

  9. the game would literally be perfect if they removed soul memory and added passwords

  10. I play Souls since 2009 importing the Asian version of Demon's Souls back when Sony cancelled all plans to localize it due to the game being, and I quote: "Crap. An unbelievably bad game". So no "my first Souls experience" bias here.

DS2 is a good game, and I played it for 100s of hours… I used to run a PvP arena in the Iron Keep for multiple communities in DS2, one of my all time fav Souls PvP experiences.

Truth be told… it's by far the weakest Souls game. Disjointed world, disjointed level design, hit boxes and audio queues that feel like a couple steps back for the series, weak bosses and the worst final boss in the series. Some dumb ideas on launch like requiring ADP to be at least at 15 for the game to have a semblance of a smooth feel as DS1. One of the few great bosses in the game was Lost Sinner, they literally nerfed him while I was going for new attempts and when I beat them it felt off… boss was slow and weak. Checked patch notes and lo and behold, they got nerfed in the dumbest way possible.

I have fond memories with DS2. I first completed it on the PS3 at home, then on my company laptop while on a gig on an offshore oil rig where some non-gamer folk got into the series because of it… Then again with the DLCs on a new PC back home. But fond memories don't mean I shut down my critical faculties. I don't think there is any real argument for DS2 being a great Souls game.

  11. i love DS 2. Artorias sword powerstance was best thing ever made.
also Ivory King still gives me chills

  12. im having a existencial crisis bc idk if u are realy cringey girl or an ai generated voice made by a cringey autist..

  13. Problem as a pvp enjoyer,is when i went in Ds2,the activity of it was as lively as Radahn's brain

  14. The least pleasant game in the whole series is what it is. Bad enemy placing, unnecessary presence of ADP and Soul Memory which ruined a lot of pleasure from the game. Absolutely idiotic locations with transitions that make no sense, especially after seamless DS1. Lore feels like it doesn't belong in Souls series at all, because Miyazaki wasn't present during development.
Overall a good game on it's own, but feels like a very bad fan-made copy of Dark Souls, which excelled at 2 or 3 things.
Oh, and I have PERSONAL beef with the devs because of that E3 presentstion of the game, which looks and plays NOTHING like the final product, literally downgrade on all fronts and even SoTFS didn't manage to catch up. 1000 hours in btw.

  15. I finished ds2 (sofs) as last from software’s game, and I think it’s rly bad in general, but vanilla actually wasn’t that bad 🤔

  16. It's always weird how the community uses the Mimic grab from behind as evidence that DS2 has bad hitboxes, but at the same time doesn't care that Iron Golem in DS1, the Evangelists in DS3 and even the Bell Bearing Hunters in Elden Ring can also grab you while you are standing behind them.

At least the mimic is easily preventable as it only happens while it is waking up, while for the Iron Golem you would assume that rolling behind him during the fight is safe.

  17. What pushed my hatred for dark souls 2 was the great lighting nerf of 2014, I always make my first character strength faith, I respect it needed a nerf but they opted to make it unusable, it took all my casts of lightening spear to kill a basic enemy. It went from a max of 52 lightening spears to 12, sunlight spear I think you could have 8 or 12 which got dropped to like 2 or 3 if I remember right and it all casts couldn’t kill a basic enemy

  18. it didn’t make me mad at all. it’s my favorite one by far, and ive been playing these games since kings field. you are just parroting nonsense.

  19. I disagree. Soul Memory is not unfriendly enough towards new players. If they ever remake DS2 they should keep Soul Memory and also add world tendency like in Demon's Souls except tendency goes down regardless if you die in Human/Hollow form :3

  20. I'm just going out on a limb and say DS2 was one of my favorite games, esthetically. What other game can you think of where you have a cage match with a dragon, a rematch with a beloved tag team from the game before? The graphics were a bit better, we didn't have the Bed of Chaos, and even though the mimics were a pain before, all it takes is one fuck up, and you know what you're in for. Plus, like all the other games, not everything is infallible. You can destroy everything in the game if you know what to do. Also, it's one of the only games I can think of where you can level up your outfits so you're not forced to wear your ass kicking outfit that comprises of the weirdest things the game has to offer.

Don't get me wrong, the game has had some glaring problems compared to the others. But what it DID have to offer was pretty unique, you got to give it that.

  21. I really couldn't give a rats arse about pvp and sit at the skill level where I barely know not to just roll spam but DS2 was probably the best for it. With ER my interest in PVP content could not be lower.

  22. There some good things, many bad things, some cool bosses, but yea, the game most of the time spita on your face, like those fkin lizards, bs hitboxes, a bunch of mobs gathered in a cubicle spamming attacks on you, but still, ds2 walk so ds3 and elden ring could run

  23. I am unfortunetly on the hate side of things for ds2 only cause the servers are offline now. and yes i know its only for ps3 and xbox but I ain't going through the slog of redoing everything again.

  24. DS2 was great after the first year of balance patches and had some of the best PVP of any Souls game

  25. Dark Souls 2 was in fact my first Souls game. I remember it as being fun but unforgiving.
