Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain released to a mixture of rave reviews and endless criticism of its inconclusive resolution and seemingly absurd plot twist. The concluding chapter in the Metal Gear Solid saga is said to center on themes of revenge, but there are deeper thematic elements at play too.
Most notably, the theme of loss is explored at length in the game’s 50+ hour narrative. As with much of Kojima’s output, this is a story open to interpretation, but this feature argues that MGSV has a sense of incompleteness because it’s one point in a circular story. Most notably, the endless cycle of war as portrayed in Venom’s choice to carry on Big Boss’s legacy support this notion, but there are other thematic elements discussed in the feature too.

Snake 💪🏾
I love this game, it's a blast.
My head hurts.
Easily one of the biggest personal video game disappointments of my life so I’d positively be strongly inclined to say no.
no its not misunderstood its just an incomplete masterpiece
Desculpas Sonystas, mas afirmo desde os anos 90. Se você não jogou metal gear solid você não jogou Playstation.
No it's not, it's uncompleted and shite compared to the other mgs games.
I just revisitied this a few weeks ago. Definitely in my top 5.
This was the worst mgs game. Repeating the same missions over and over again in an empty open world until the credits eventually role with 90% of the plot told rather than shown in missable cassette recordings.
Gameplay was good but not enough story game was unfinished and Snake hardly said a word
Wow. You even stole the title of the vid from another youtuber with more views
I thought this was a universal classic already
Just did a couple of missions today, i have clocked around a thousand hours.
Absolutely. The attention to detail was unreal. You have to know what you're looking at, and once all the surreal cutscenes make sense. Shit gives you a mind blowing eureka moment. That is when you beat TPP.
This came for my 5 years after I beat it the 3rd time. And was fresh off since YouTube deep dives and doing my own pondering. Great shit. World recommend.
it's an experience, brah 😉
Absolutley excellent video and analysis on MGS5. It is a masterpiece.
All of Metal Gear is misunderstood. The plot is confusing af
It's honestly the same mechanics from MGS4 just with a bullet time mode that no one asked for.
Completely lackluster story.
Fights are braindead.
Missions are rehashed constantly.
Empty map.
Ton of filler missions no one cares about.
Eli and Quiet are both ultimately pointless in the story compared with how much screentime they get.
Skullface is a pathetic excuse for a villain.
I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I'm forgetting but the game itself is forgetful.
Compare the game to MGS3 and it's easy to understand the hate.
Ground Zeros was a better game than Phantom Pain.
Would have been much better if they stuck to condensed maps with a condensed story instead of spreading it over some shitty call of duty copy and paste desert.
No mgs4 is tho
no METAL GEAR SOLID ON PS1 IS!!!!!
I feel like this video is one giant cope lol
I mean I enjoyed it but, no.
"An over rated piece of shit"
No it’s an unfinished masterpiece which was a disappointment mission play through wise as a lot of parts were repeated, the opening was amazing and it built such a huge hype but it went down hill as you played , the ending and reveal of big boss was also the second best part.
We definitely need the remasterd of Phantom Pain for current gen consoles. It would be awesome.
No, it is not.
It's not. The game is suffering from severe identity crisis. It is a weird mix match of different ideas and the pacing is terrible. They clearly did not have enough time to to flesh everything out into a well designed coherent package.
I disliked MGS5 for the same reasons I disliked MGSPW. The story is fragmented; you have to select the missions and some are fillers. Some of the tech in the game seems to be more advanced than than events later in the series.
Otherwise, Its pretty good. Although unfinished, I still thought it closed out the series well enough. Even though theres alotta sides, some tie into who BB/VS are as people and what they want to fix in the world. There are hints that they tie into the main plot but can be overlooked. I never thought Solid and Snake should have had the same voice. I was happy when they casted someone else.
I wish they'd just come to a deal and do a re-release Director's cut.
Great game but did not need an open World also story was lacking. But combat and stealth were great.
Is this even to be debated?
I don't beat many games. I don't know if I've ever beaten a game twice. I beat this 4 times.
Cus it's not it's not even a finished game
i believe it is one of humanities greatest creations. he is a genius like beethoven and da vinci. but the best part of it, everybody can have a lot of fun with his creation
Ahab is Gray Fox
Ishmael is Skull Face
Kaz is Decoy Octopus
Paz is Quiet
Huey is Zero
✌️
The walker gear makes this game a classic
Absolutely phenomenal gameplay for sure. The game is sadly incomplete its very clear Kojima was pushed out before the game was complete. I wonder what we could have gotten.
i still go back here and there even after all these years. one of my fav games ever
Underrated? Didn’t this game win a bunch of awards and sell millions of copies?
I still play this game to this day.
I played it for not very long and giving it another go now and I like it lol
Poetic
Wait, are you saying they made the game purposefully incomplete just so we would stop playing? Yeah, I have a hard time believing that.
Okay so it could have been a masterpiece and by far the best metal gear game even my favourite game of all time had Konami done 2 simple things kept David Hayter as Kiefer Sutherland does a shit job at snake and if they finished the game I get alot of the reason for Kojima leaving was they were rushing the game so they were never gonna finish it but it wouldn't have been impossible for them to do so after he left like imagine if phantom pain is in the next collection of they actually finish the game then it'd be a masterpiece as if now I love it and have just gone back to play it for the 50th time but snake eater still holds the title of not only best metal gear but best game ever
while i do agree the story was lackluster, for me the gameplay elements overruled that. i spent HOURS just running around both maps completing side ops and just doing my own shit. I mean i loved MGS3 on my 3DS,(plus it was the first MGS i beat) but MGS5:TTP really hooked me into the series overall.
We was blessed to receive a open world mgs game that plays as well as this game does, there has never been a sneaking game with as much choice, a character a tragic as venom, carrying the weight and living in the shadows of a beast like the mgs franchise this game is literally shakespearean, yes it has the weakest story representation in the franchise and yet, it’s my favorite rip venom snake
