Why does The Sims 4 get such overwhelmingly negative reviews, despite being one of the best selling games of all time?

My take is that with the right DLC and mods, no. I still play sims 4 the most.
The only thing I love about the sims 4 is cas and build mode there is a little bit lack of actual gameplay and in this case TS3 win as for me but i really do enjoy building in the sims4

I miss the sims logic that’s completely lacking in sims 4. Like being able to grow hot dogs and cheese plants at a certain gardening skill.
Sims 4 we get mighty plant milk but not from the cow plant which would be classic sims logic but no instead it just comes from the cow which makes no sense at all it’s not funny it’s just misinformation like baked goods being under cooking.
Even a new plant that just had bottles of milk hanging on it would be sims logic but a bit of a waste when the cow plant exists and it merely needed a new action added to it
People: just STOP buying DLCs and download the Anadius DLC Unlocker. After paying for the game and a few packs I've learnt the lesson: it's never gonna get better. It's always gonna be shallow. I've already paid enought.
For now…Sims games are the only real life simulation games. I've played other games that are supposed to be similar but they really wasn't. Long story short I play Sims 4 because I like it and there's no other option.
What I don’t get is how come they’ve never made a reboot of Sims 3. I’ve been hearing people crying out for that for ages, that they just want the Sims 3 but with better graphics and less lag, but EA has never bothered for some reason. Like, come on, Pokémon recycles old games all the time and gives them better graphics and quality of life options (they’re not always the best, but some are better then the originals – eg. Heart Gold and Soul Silver), and Pokémon is a cash grabby company, why can’t EA, who is also cash grabby, just do the same??
TS2 is the best in the franchise. So much bang for the buck. I'm glad I got the UC when it was available for free. I have all the physical discs, but the download is better for new systems. I still play it and just played TS1 last night.
For me the biggest problem is the endless spawning of random npc with weird clothing and random accessoires, I don’t need these sims in my saves
Sims 4 is essentially a dollhouse, its made for everything to go the way you want if we exclude the bugs, it's no substance, nothing unexpected (MINUS THE BUGS) nothing that can make you keep coming back besides the ✨aesthetics✨
Maybe that's why EA keeps cutting corners on the coding and quality assurance team while inflating the art team, maybe they know a great chunk of simmers will buy DLCs if they look ✨pretty✨ no matter how shallow/broken they launch (I.E: My wedding stories)
The only problem i have with the sims 4 is that there's no challenges or consequences unless you have mods. Its crazy to me how easy it is to make your partner like you again if you cheat on them. I remember in the sims 2 it was so hard, especially with the fury system, i couldn't even amend the relationship without them automously starting a fight with my sim. Or how if your house was messy, you could get roaches and get sick or if you bought something expensive, there was a risk of getting robbed. There's nothing like that in the sims 4.
When I was a teenager I used to play Sims 1 to 3. But I stopped playing the game years ago, until one day my boyfriend told me he just downloaded the sims 4 basegame because it was free. So I thougt: "Nice, I always felt like I wanna play Sims again but unfortunately I lost all these expensive CD's and I didn't wanna buy them again". I started playing Sims again a couple of weeks ago and immediately got addicted. For me the reason why I prefer Sims 4 over Sims 3 is because it's just new, I was bored from Sims 3 at some point. And there are so many funny mods. Also, I am mainly a builder. So that's why the shallow gameplay doesn't disturb me that much. I prefer to let my sims just do their thing and cheat their moods. I mean, I spent so many hours on sending them to toilet, to bed, to the shower etc. … I'm simply bored by it. When the Expansion packs were on sale I purchased two of them (only after watching your brutally honest reviews), so I'm looking forward to play with my chicken, I didn't yet finish building my farm though ….
I honestly love every iteration of the game for different reasons and I always go back and forth between the 3. (excluding sims 1) I wasn’t a fan of the sims 4 for YEARS. I bought it when it came out and was very disappointed and didn’t play it again up until 2 years ago. I don’t know what happened but the more I played and the more packs I got I actually started enjoying it quite a bit. I think the main thing for me is the mods are really good for the sims 4. I don’t use anything too crazy but just having mccc installed is a game changer for me.

My issue is also that they keep adding but not multiplying if that makes sense. For example, they add a new social media but we already had a previous social media, but they don’t tie well together. Wouldn’t it be better if it expanded on the already established social medias like simstagram. Cause it doesn’t feel.. rewarding and as you said its more confusing than anything when they add this like socil media career where you collect followers but we also have social bunny etc. It would be better if they instead ”lock” features of the same social media used in sims 4 by the packs rather than always make a new one.
I have played since Sims1. Don't remember a lot about the first one, but I still remember families from both Sims2 and 3. I got emotional when they died. I don't remember anybody I created for Sims4.. I can create them and a home, but when I start playing them, I keep getting interrupted by some social event, or offer, or the game pushing me where I don't want to go. If the SIm has autonomy they don't do what I ask, but randomly do pushups or try out each seat at the table like Goldie Locks. I feel like I am constantly fighting the game to tell the story I am interested in. That is not how it was in 2 or 3. Random things would happen, but still the story felt organic. Sims 3 got performance issues as it grew, but there was a modder who fixed almost all of that., EA could have just incorporated those changes. Just like they could certainly cut a deal with Carl and get Dine Out fixed. Haven't played since early spring when my hard drive died and no plans to reinstall.
The Sims franchise died back in 2014! I said that or commented multiple times! this game was invented to be parody of life not to be the real one!

The realism is gone, the creativity is gone, the whimsy is gone. The Sims 2 is amongst my very favorite games for all the reasons I just listed. It feels realistic but also whimsical and creative. I loved playing it growing up and I'm dying to play it now, again, as an adult. The Sims 4 is just corporate greed in a nutshell. It's so disappointing in so many ways. It reminds me of Disney now vs Disney when it first began. They're both plagued and overtaken by woke ideology and it's so saddening to see.
I think they just rushed the entire thing even with the app they wanted to get it out so fast that they forgotten that it takes time so they rushed it out and And their greed but the Sims five is going to be absolutely worse because it’s just going to be like some free play on the phone

If you want to get the Sims two and one and disc for the Sims three Amazon has all of it do you have desk and the codes
And if they actually basically updated the hardware for the Sims 2and 3and one and update the graphics you could actually what other people younger generations who are getting into the Sims franchise play and find out what they likeAnd fix the bugs too it’s probably that much easier than taking away the game I think they don’t realize that the older games could actually bring them more money if they had them out and we’re willing to update them but they’re not
And I do think charging 40 bucks for an expansion pack that has a lot of broken items is really bad like I remember around the Sims three time expansion packs work sometimes 30 bucks or 20 bucks same with stuff packs they were 20 bucks but they were really good because they had a lot of stuff in them

Honestly i think if the sims 4 was a stand alone game it would probably be considered a pretty good game. However in comparison to the sims 2 & 3, apart from the graphics being more polished, it’s just down right awful.
I’ve tried to make sims 4 work for years but I’ve come to the realization that the game is just trash and cheap quality, like Roblox level
I am getting so tired of companies having this god complex once they reach a certain number of loyal fans and just doing whatever makes them the most money no matter how much it tarnishes the franchise's image. The worst part about it is the only way to prove to a company they have gone to far is to kill the franchise entirely so they don't make any money. It's literally just poor quality or nothing at all.
Your example of the Loves the Outdoor trait and Outdoorsy Lifestyle is a very good example of how this game doesn't have complexity. It's so busy with things that are superficial and irrelevant to gameplay mechanics. This game DOES NOT have mechanics, or barely has at most. What Simmers who desperately defend this game fail to see is they are buying a video game not a Barbie doll house.
