Going from the feral looking dog like demon creature for the barrel carrier to a little goblin dude carrying a barrel has to be one of the worst downgrades in enemy designs from concept to in game
Unpopular opinion but the reason why DS2 sticks most with me out of all 3 games, is the armor, weapon, and enemy designs are so damn amazingly done that i think gives a testament to how much hard work and ambition was put into DS2, if they just had the time to really put the game’s world and story together we potentially could’ve had potentually the best game of the 3, i still am curious to know what the game would’ve been like if they stuck with the original plot they had all the way back in 2012.
And since this is the only time i think i will be able to say it, but DS2’s overall atmosphere and tone i have more enjoyment out of than DS1 and especially DS3, it feels the most whimsical, and, the best way i can put it, is it feels the most like there is still a living thriving world out there despite the obvious decaying state everywhere else, unlike DS1 or DS3, DS2 feels the most like a classical dark fantasy adventure from an older era of gaming.
Wonder if the level of detail put into the concept art vs how basic and at times ugly the actual models are is a reflection of the desires for the game vs the horrible rush development turned into and the clearly incomplete state the game is in? I know final in game assets rarely match the concept art, but some of the enemies more or less stay the same (minus becoming a little muddier and uglier with the DS2 style) while other completely fall off and just look so so much worse then in the concept designs like just worse pallets, details, and designs.
It's sad the amount of work we don't pay attention to when playing games. It also feels as though Dark Souls 2 went more towards body horror than the other two.
I love the DS2 Enemies. I feel like the problem with some parts of this game is they pair these awesome unique enemy models with some painfully generic. In some ways, DS2 feels more like a "generic" fantasy setting than the other souls games, which I don't mean that as a dig at all. I actually came to appreciate it in later DS2 playthroughs which gave the game a very cozy vibe.
Far and away my favorite enemy design in DS2 are the Mastodons. They only appear in a select few locations. In fact there are only 5-6 of them in the entire game. Yet they are incredibly detailed and the concept of fighting a massive elephant clad in golden plate makes them very intimidating foes. I learned just the other day that apparently they have a unique plunging animation if you manage to land on top of one. You can only do this in like, one spot in Doors Of Pharros making it very situational useful, but still such a nice touch. Nothing more satisfying than straddling a giant behemoth with a massive hit to the skull. Also, as evidenced by the Mastodon Greatsword, apparently there was going to be a greatsword variation of them but like many enemy designs they were scrapped and in the final game the greatsword appears in a chest just as a little reference to their formsr existence. The same thing happened with the old knight pike and greatshield, the drakekeepers greataxe and greatshield, and a few more enemies if I recall. Would love to see if their models still survive in the files, though I doubt it.
I always found it funny they decided to give Sanctum Priestess junk in the trunk, then again this game did cut out the desert sorceress doing BDSM as a attack. DS2 was oddly horny if you look hard enough lol
I absolutely hated my first play through of DS2. My second play through was when I truly saw the beauty of the game. Yes, it has its flaws. A lot of them. But it’s still so damn good, even to this day.
I’ve never got to play dark souls two yet, and I am a massive, dark souls fan. I like all of their games actually. I’ve played dark souls in dark souls three literally hundreds of times each and I’ve played bloodborne Somewhere between a dozen to two dozen times, Beat Eldon ring about 20 times. I’m going to try to find it and buy it as soon as I get paid now I have a new vigor And I intend to find it and play it finally
When I played through the game for the first time a couple months before Elden Rings release (Played DS3 and DS1 before) and got to the fume sorcerers for the first time, I instantly thought of the Nameless King because of that hair style. I think I remember them using lightning attacks, idk much of the lore but I’d imagine there could be some correlation there.
I'm looking at the designs for the enemies here and I don't recognize a lot of the enemies shown off here, You made me realize that despite me beating the game several times I had always perceived enemies as nothing but an obstacle with a health bar and didn't appreciate the finer details
It's funny to me whenever I hear the hate of dark souls 2 as when I played it myself (when it first came out) it was at a point I my life I never went on the internet. Given I never went on the internet i was never brainwashed to hate it and so it quickly became my favorite of the three souls games available at that time. It was the amazing creature design and stunning areas that drew me into the game and to this day I do personally still enjoy it over dark souls 1 and demons souls.. I however will say I prefer dark souls 3, bloodborne and elden ring over it
These look like shit man c'mon, super cliché and simplistic, compare it to ANY other Souls game and it gets event worse. These look like some WOW mobs.

Dark Souls 2 is LOVE
The Sanctum's Princess Cake👀
Yeah, the best game in series, in my opinion. I want Dark Souls 2 – 2 from the same creators, no kidding
I need Dark Souls 2 Remake, please. 😢

it's so sad that From soft's concept artist died, the impact he has had on the games industry can not be overrated

I don't remember the enhanced undead
Not very impressive when I don't remembered any of these enemies! Are they even in the game?
Dark souls 2 good, elden ring bad

Looks like WoW tbh very generic
One of my favorite enemies was the Possessed Armor.
Also 6:34 you’re welcome
Dark Souls 2 is literally a game that came out

The Enhanced Undead reminds of The Omen from Elden Ring a little

DS 2 was ahead of its time
The only impressive thing that ds2 had
I have never seen those first two guys in my life you cannot convince me that they’re in game

GET ME THAT PRIESTESS 💳💥💳💥💳💥
But…all those designs look generic. Am I missing something here? Black Knight alone beats them all.
damn i always thought the barrel carriers were just hollows, never noticed the animal features
Meh. Nothing can compete with the Elden Beast.

Kings field

I love Dark Souls 2, I don't care about people says about it, it's a great game

try 2 handing
then backstab
…but still senseless.
I thought what was most scary about the enemies was the lack of polygons.
The enhanced undead looks like something u can find in resident evil game lol
I just love theses games Dark Souls 1,2,3, in this respective order.
Damn a lot more interesting than the 100 fucking knights we got in later games.
Still not a fan of ds2 but you were completely right about this. Great art to model transition.
bro the enemy variety in ds2 is unmatched as well
Most of enemy can go well with horror game theme. Imagine you are normal dude living in same world setting with dark souls-vers. 😂
Great video, thank you ❤️
