“The Last of Us Part II is a 2020 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. Set five years after The Last of Us (2013), the game focuses on two playable characters in a post-apocalyptic United States whose lives intertwine: Ellie, who sets out in revenge for a murder, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult. The game uses a third-person perspective; the player must fight human enemies and cannibalistic zombie-like creatures with firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth.
Following some delays, The Last of Us Part II was released on June 19, 2020. It received critical acclaim, with praise for its gameplay, audio design, score, performances, characters, and visual fidelity, though its narrative and themes divided critics. It was the subject of review bombing on Metacritic, with some players criticizing the story and characters; discourse surrounding the game became adversarial. Part II is one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games and the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive, with over four million units sold in its release weekend, and over ten million by 2022. It won more than 320 Game of the Year awards and received multiple other accolades from awards shows and gaming publications.” – Wikipedia/The Last of Us Part II

This is it! 😭
As I said at the end of this episode, finishing The Last of Us Part II feels like saying goodbye to an old friend.
This franchise has made such a huge impact on me. I've fallen in love with this world, it's characters and the amazing ost and I wish I could experience these games again for the very first time.
I've already shared some of my thoughts about the game during this playthrough and I tried my best to share my final thoughts at the end of this episode.
Feel free to share your thoughts about the ending and the game as a whole in the comment section. ☺
I created a poll a while ago asking what game you would like me to play after TLOU2 and the winner is Red Dead Redemption 2! 🤠
I've been wanting to play this for such a long time and have already installed the game on my PC! I'm trying to get the first episode out as soon as possible.
Thank you for joining me on this wonderful journey! ❤
❤: Hanna
P.S. I was planning to make the outro more interesting to you but ran out of time (and brain cells) so I hope you don't mind staring at my face for 20 minutes straight. 🙃😂
2:12:14 of pure dystopian perfection 🤘 hope you have a week full of happiness and good vibes 🦋🤗
Holy! It’s been a long ride through this story, I loved to see your thoughts and reactions during this last bit. The ending so so ambiguous and like you said “emptying” exactly how I felt when I finished the game. Made you critically think about it too since that last scene allowed that, such an impactful scene to see that Ellie was willing to finally amend with Joel. On to the next journey, Hanna!
I played TLoU1 on PS3 in 2013 and loved it. It finally replaced Gabriel Knight 1 as my favourite game, and that came out in 1993. I had to wait until late last year to finally play part 2 (and I finally finished it a couple of month ago), and I managed to avoid spoilers for nearly 10 years. It was exactly what I was hoping it would be, and I'm so happy you also enjoyed it. 😆
Oh Hanna, apologies if you know this. when the game is complete the title scene changes to a beached boat with a building in the distance. The building is the "domed building in Avalon", it's where Abby and Lev were told to go on the CB radio in 2425 Constance. It looks like Abby and Lev reached the Fireflies Base
The ending is actually so poetic. Ellie spared Abby, not because she decided revenge was wrong, rather she realized that her hatred for Abby came from a very different place. Ellie hates Abby for ruining her chance to forgive Joel for what he had done. She, like Abby, had tortured Joel in one way or another by pushing him out of her life for what he had done and this haunted Ellie.
Ellie never had time to forgive Joel and accept his actions. Ellie viewed killing Abby as a sort of penance that would absolve herself of her own sins against Joel which she had projected onto Abby to remove herself from the guilt. In the end, as she had Abby fighting for her last breaths, she reflects on who Joel really was. She remembers the man that became her family and the good in Joel. She reflects on the night before his death when she made the first step towards forgiveness and acceptance before that came to a sudden halt with his death.
She realizes that killing Abby changes nothing and finally reaches deep enough to remove some blame from Abby and place it upon herself. People are confused when they think she forgave Abby because she didn’t in that moment. Ellie forgave herself and Joel. She finally came to terms with Joel’s decision and the fallout that occurred after it. This is clear when she returns to the farm and plays his guitar for the last time. She plays the song Joel played for her when he introduced the guitar to her. “If I ever were to lose you, I’d surely lose myself.” This line reflects both Ellie and Joel’s feelings about their relationship with each other.
Joel would’ve lost himself if he left Ellie in the hospital and Ellie lost herself after he died. Ellie restored herself by sparing Abby and maintaining an ounce of the humanity that is so prevalent in Ellie during the TLOU1. Every time she strings the guitar I thought of Joel and that special moment we get in the first half of the game. When she plays it for the last time, the song represents the very essence of who she is but this last time it is broken due to the loss of her fingers but also a loss of something much more.
The music is symbolizing the restoration of Ellie and her and Joel’s bond but also this new brokenness reveals a missing part of herself that will always be gone now that she has accepted that Joel is gone. The loss of this important part of her life can be heard through the broken sounds of the guitar strings which sound so tragic after hearing that beautiful rhythm throughout the game. It is such a tragic and beautiful message of coming to terms with loss and finding forgiveness within.
It’s a shame that people do not understand the ending and simply confine it to “revenge is bad.” It is so much more than revenge and hatred. It’s about love and forgiveness. Personally, I think Joel would be proud that Ellie found herself through forgiveness rather than following through with revenge. He sacrificed humanity since he believed they had no cure for their inhumanity. Joel found the missing humanity in Ellie, and she proved him right in the end. Lastly, after Ellie strums the last few notes of Future Days, she leaves behind the guitar which symbolizes her newfound ability to move forward with her life, and assumably returns to Dina in Jackson. This game is a masterpiece.
What an experience! It was a pleasure to go through it with you =)
I wasn’t expecting so much new stuff to be introduced in the final stretch. I really like the SMG in particular. It’s stats are identical to or better than the 9mm — same damage, same penetration, permanent silencer, higher capacity, and higher fire rate. Ironically, by virtue of being full auto, video game logical intuition misleads us from realizing it can kill almost anything in 1-3 shots.
I’m surprised to hear you didn’t care for Owen, I never got that impression until now. I think Owen is most people’s favourite member of the Salt Lake crew, often more than even Abby. Similar story with Dina — I personally felt like Dina was a great person, but never really liked her as a character for some reason. Glad you did though!
I think because of the structuring of the story, you can get a surprising amount of value out of a second play through, especially since the final piece of the puzzle that you didn’t even know you were missing only comes up at the very end. That conversation between Joel and Ellie happens only hours before Abby kills him, and it reveals that Ellie’s primary motivation was because Abby took away her chance to forgive Joel. It makes it easier to notice that the game is frequently drawing parallels between Abby and Joel, and Ellie and Abby. Abby carrying Lev to the boats could not be much more similar to Joel carrying Ellie out of the hospital. They even both repeat “I got you” as they’re picking them up. My impression is that while Abby likely never knew the similarities, Ellie likely did, and in the end she let Abby go because that’s the closest thing she could get to forgiving Joel and having Abby let him go.
I played through the original TLOU the week it released, and it along with Ellie became instant favourites, so Part II was unfortunately fairly disappointing for me when I first played it, but watching you play through it your first time has helped me enjoy it more. Liking Ellie so much, it was hard watching this game drag her through hell, leaving parts of her along the way. I expected Joel to die, but not at the beginning, and not so unceremoniously. The story was not quite what I wanted or expected, but I can’t deny its qualities. Aside from some specifics and oddities, the visuals and gameplay are undeniably better, which doesn’t get the recognition it deserves from many. I’m hopeful the polarized response does not deter whatever Part III may be, and I’m curious to see what the standalone multiplayer will be like (what I’ve heard makes it sound like it will be closer to what I wanted the original multiplayer to be).
Sad to say, I am likely one of those viewers you mentioned at the end. I hope you find increased success on YouTube, and I look forward to returning for more TLOU content when the algorithm inevitably recommends it. I’ll try to keep an eye open for anything you do down the line anyway =) It’s been grand, here’s wishing you the best Hanna!!
I still don't know any girl who didn't like this game… 😉 Thanks for the journey, Hanna!
Loved watching you play this it was a good time, more excited for RDR2. If you thought the TLOU2 was long just wait lol, enjoy!
Thanks for sharing your play-through of this incredible game. To this day this is the only video game that ever made me cry. I can never forget that final fight when Ellie was drowning Abby, I looked across at my wife, tears streaming down her face, and for the first time I thought Ellie was an infected. The sounds she was making, the way she was fighting reminded me of runners in the 2 games. Her immunity truly meant nothing without Joel. Thanks again for sharing this.
Not gonna lie, I started watching your videos because it was TLOU Part 2, my favorite game ever. But you've actually captivated me. I like your thoughts and comments, you're a very smart woman. So I guess I see you on the Red Dead Redemption 2 journey (my second favorite game, btw). 😆
Vengeance takes everything from both sides and your left feeling empty and disappointed because what you lost you can never bring it back Ellie can finally move on Abby moved on when she saved Yara and Lev killing Joel didn't bring her closure so I enjoyed the game because it forced me out of my comfort zone lol can't wait to see your gameplay 🥰
I personally don't want a Part III either 'cause I think it ended perfectly imo, I love the ambiguous ending and absolutely loved the overarching narrative. I also loved Part II even more than Part I, but I also have the utmost faith in Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, 'cause I know they'll do the characters and the story justice.
If they've got a Part III in mind, I know theyll be telling the story 'cause it needs to be told and I imagine it'll be a fitting conclusion to the franchise. Neil truly cares about these characters and this series, so I know he'll only tell a story if there's a great one to be told.
Also, with Part I essentially being about love and Part II primarily being about hate (and grief, trauma and love being a part of it), perhaps Part III will be Ellie's redemption arc story or her finding a new purpose again, and it may come full circle with Part I thematically.
I really appreciated hearing your thoughts, and I'm so glad you liked the game! And I hope the break did you some good as well. It's been a joy to be along for this ride and watch you play this series, and I hope your channel deservedly continues to grow with future playthroughs!
so glad i started watching you play with the first game! youre a favorite player of mine, it feels like we're playing together lol. if you ever choose to replay the series/one of the games i will certainly be watching
In an indelible statement of just how unique a story and game design 'The Last of Us 2' is, the ending of this game left me feeling different than any other I've played. I too was initially left feeling numb and disconnected at the end, and disliked it in the immediate sense. HOWEVER, I can't think of any other interactive media that has ever dug itself so deep into my subconscious (and made itself quite comfortable there, I might add) as this game/story did. I couldn't stop retracing the paths our protagonists/antagonists had trod, and how they intercepted one another. How small details affected each other in deeply relatable ways, and the consequences of decisions that left ripples of pain and death all around them – both intended and unintended.
The Last of Us asked each player whether they would sacrifice their child to save humanity, and the answer was unambiguously, "No, I will become a monster if that's what it takes to protect them." Consequences be damned.
The Last of Us 2 asked each player whether causing pain to someone they hate – the person who hurt them to begin with – can diminish the pain they feel. The ambiguous and lonely answer found at the end of this story offers a reply, but there isn't a satisfying answer.
Thank you, I really enjoyed watching you play! This game had such a big impact on me, and I think it will stay with me a long time.
Well hanna I hope you enjoyed TLOU part 2 I had a blast playing it too but there's rumors about a part 3 so cross your fingers cause if the rumors are true its going to one heck of a party 😁
Well guess ellie decided that abby doesn't deserve to die anymore a bitter sweet ending for their fight
The ending was actually positive for Ellie, she put her demons behind her and is now very ready to live finally, leaving the guitar was her leaving finally moving on.
Here is my breakdown on the game:A simple revenge story on the surface unveils itself as a story regarding the importance of identity and grief, more specifically how we tend to cope with grief in a time of sorrow and suffering. This story’s branching pathways helped me see how similar the two women actually were. Abby finally found a new meaning to her life the moment she took Lev and Yara under her wing. All the pain, all the sadness and the realization of how useless her tracking Joel and killing him was were swept away upon cementing and finding a new purpose….A real one. Ellie, on the other side, wasn't really seeking revenge and she wasn’t so much mad at Abby more than she was mad at the fact that Abby took away the chance for her to reconcile with Joel. She finally had the strength to try and forgive him but he died the day after….and you kinda have to admit he had it coming. Killing Abby was just a objective to focus on, to evade the thought of how badly she pushed away the man that she loved the most, the father that she never had, tormented by the thought of him thinking that she hated him while dying. It took one moment, a single glimpse of him while trying to drown Abby to remember the gift he gave her that night, a real precious one: How to forgive, how to forgive the man that took her chance of saving the world and to forgive the woman that killed him, seeing how that once fierce warrior was crawling in the dirt to save that scrawny little kid. At almost the cost of her life, she ended up giving back to her worst enemy, exactly like Joel did with her years ago.
Loved watching your play through and will miss looking forward to the next episode.Anyways loved your thoughts at the end, very well said:)
Also I will continue watching your play throughs no matter what the game:)Red Dead is also amazing and can't wait!
Hi Hanzelmi …thankyou for allowing me to follow you on this amazing journey. It's emotionally challenging, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've played it 4 times on every difficulty and watched about 25 playthrough's, so I've had plenty of time to understand the game. It is a masterpiece. For me The Last Of Us was the best game ever made, but this game now holds that crown. The story is often misunderstood because people miss the subtle things on one playthrough. This is not a story where the good guy kills the bad guy and everyone lives happily ever after. This reveals the harsh mentality of clan loyalty where loss is followed by revenge at any cost.
The enemy is demonised in order to justify atrocities. The war between the Wolves and the Scars is clearly crafted to reveal how clans lock horns and fight to the death. We have Russia against Ukraine. We have Israel against Palestine. Germany against the Jews. You get the picture. After the first game, I wanted the same as you. Another adventure with Joel and Ellie, but Neil Druckman (Dr Uckman) gave us better.
This is not a story about revenge. It is a story about empathy and tests the player to see if they can show empathy. Ellie and Abby are mirror images of themselves. They both had their fathers slaughtered and the trauma sends them into a spiral of revenge at any cost with PTSD nightmares. Both characters felt that the only way to get closure is by revenge. But that just kills your humanity with a cold heart. Abby got revenge and it did her no good. She still had the PTSD nightmares. Abby finally got closure when she regained her humanity and show empathy for Yara and Lev.
Lev was born a girl called Lily, but became a transgender boy who cut his hair to be like the men instead of being a wife. As with all religions, gender issues are not allowed. Neil stuck that in to highlight the cult behaviour of religions. Abby did not care. Her maternal instincts took over and she adopted him as a son in her mind. The theme of PTSD trauma cured by empathy was present in the first game. Joel was suffering PTSD nightmares in the first game and had lost his humanity. Ellie's naive clarity taught him how to love again and he showed empathy to Ellie.
The game had to let you witness the full trauma of Joel's slaughter in order to put you in Ellie's shoes and lust for revenge. Neil's job was to bring the players around to the point where they showed empathy for Abby and realised that Ellie must do the same. The end sequence was cleverly crafted. By that time, if the player was capable of empathy, they would be on board with Abby and feel uncomfortable how Ellie was still stuck in revenge mode. If Ellie had killed Abby she would have been doomed to insanity. But Joel reached out from the grave with an image of the last time she spoke to him. He was peaceful and content. Ellie realised that Joel would not want this and would prefer she showed empathy. Joel was not ashamed of what he had done. He would do it again. He knew he was not going to die of old age with so many children of the people he had killed coming at him for revenge. He resigned to the fact and said do your speech and let's get this over with. That triggered Abby to give him a slow death instead.
The whole game is cleverly summed up with two sentences. When Ellie goes to Joel's house and finds the coffee cup he was drinking the night before he died, she said "all the promises at sundown, I meant them just like the rest." That refers to the last time she spoke to him when she said, "I don't think I could ever forgive you for that, but I would like to try." That's it right there. I don't think I could ever forgive Abby for what she had done but I would like to try. I don't think I could ever forgive Neil Druckman for putting me through this hell, but I would like to try. That's empathy.
The cost of revenge is laid bare for both Abby and Ellie. They both lost close friends and where alienated from their community. It was shown that Ellie did the same to Nora as Abby did to Joel. Although it is not revealed in the game, it is possible that Nora was Marlene's daughter. "That bitch got what he deserved." Ellie loved Marlene. Do you think Ellie would have slaughtered Nora if she had known that Joel shot Marlene in the face. The game constantly puts these moral dilemma's in your face to break you out of the revenge at any cost mentality. Originally Tommy wanted to get revenge by himself to reduce the cost, but when Abby turned him into a bitter cripple by shooting his sniper eye and giving him brain damage, he was consumed with revenge at any cost and wanted Ellie to sacrifice herself on the after of revenge.
Out of all the character's in the game, there was only person who was against revenge at any cost right at the start of the game. He had grown tired of clan wars. It was Owen. When he created a child with Mel, he realised that life is precious and was against senseless killing. Remember the start where he is acting weird with doubts and states Mel is pregnant, then Abby calls him out and says she'll do it herself. He loved Abby but had to let her go because she was consumed with revenge to the point that she had no love in her heart. Owen actually saved Ellie's life. He supported Abby out of love but did not fully agree with what she was doing. He transferred to Mel when he realised he could never have Abby's love, but when Abby showed empathy and regained her humanity, Owen wanted to rewind the clock and find true love again. That mess was now too tangled.
The dogs were used as a tool to show the player the damage that revenge at any cost does. Poor Allice and Bear were killed by Ellie in the heat of the moment, but playing Abby bonds you with these animals. I know this game is exhausting, but such a masterpiece benefits from a replay when you see things in hindsight. Hanzelmi, I really enjoyed your intelligent playthrough. Can I say I loved your humour and pretty face 🙂
so now that you've finished the game I can tell you that in the very beginning of the game when you are traveling through the snow and Ellie and Dina are talking Ellie actually tells Dina that she made up with Joel. Now I don't know if that is an easter egg when you start a new game + or not.
I do like the ending, but I can see how it might feel like one ending too many. I think they did it intentionally to make you feel totally worn out and spent by the end. I don't think Ellie necessarily ends up alone, Dina would probably give her another chance if she goes back to Jackson. I think this game is like one of those movies you appreciate even more the second time around, after knowing how the pieces fit together. Like the last flashback with Joel, knowing that was their last conversation before his death makes the intensity of Ellie's rage and pain even more poignant.
What do you mean the farm at the end is out of place, why wouldn't she go back and just have some small hope dina was still there. It kind of showed she lost everything to go after abby, and i think it help set up the start of the next/last game in this series. People wanted a happy/better ending, well that was never going to happen lol.
Glad to hear your honest impressions! I guess to feel what this game wants us to feel it’s necessary to connect with the whole story.. Thank you for the good series! 😊
I love watching your videos and will continue to. I like that you took the time to process and then let us hear your thoughts now.
Also, not sure if you caught it or if others in the comments mentioned it, but the new main menu screen reveals that Abby and Lev made it to Catalina Island (the Firefly HQ).
I cant even begin to explain how much I've loved watching your playthrough, thank you so much, I cant wait to see you play Red Dead. Stay awesome
A third game is NOT confirmed
Two things that hit me hard in this game are:
She ended all alone as she said to Sam she was scared of… And,
She cannot perfoem the only thing Joel gave her forever…
Its pretty sad she had lost her fingers…
BTW, I fell in love with Abby…
It was a great pleasure to watch you playing this gem.
Thanks @hanzelmi.
starring is not a reaction.
Thanks for sharing your playthrough! It sounds like your experience with the ending mirrors mine. Initially, as I finished the game, I felt numb, then disappointed, and then a bit angry. But the next morning, I suddenly broke down in tears. The flood of emotions was profound and confusing. For the next week, I couldn't stop thinking about my entire experience with TLoU2. I realized the true power of the game. I continued to be obsessed with it for at least a year (maybe I still am). Ultimately, I consider TLoU2 to be a masterpiece. Now, I think that even the ending is brilliant. It's not what I wanted, but it is what I needed. I can honestly say that this game changed me. I see people differently, and I see myself differently. I attribute that change to this game's unique ability to cause the player to feel intensely conflicted when experiencing both sides of horrible (but understandable) decisions and actions. My knee-jerk reactions are now tempered by attempts to understand the other side.
Anyways, I look forward to your next series. The pacing of RDR2 is initially much slower than TLoU2, but it is a masterpiece in its own way.
Wow, what a journey this has been! First I just want to say that I appreciate you asking me to moderate for this series as it's very dear to me and being able to help you through this adventure meant a lot to me ❤ Secondly, I appreciate your honest thoughts about the ending and the game as a whole. It's very rare to be completely one way or another about it, there is just too much to dissect and ponder to love it or hate it and that's why it's such a great experience to see how your thoughts may differ or be similar to someone else's. Thank you for such an amazing time with this series, it will be hard to let go at first but you can always play it again down the road. 😊 Now onto another fantastic story and world with RDR2! I'm looking forward to what comes next for your channel ☺️
The other sad thing about the fight, Ellie basically is becoming the first person she ever killed to save Joel. Drowning someone under a shallow water who can't really fight back. It's probably the most brutal final fight in all of gaming imo. Like I can't think of one more brutal and intense
Remember when Ellie said to Sam in the 1st game her biggest fear was to end up alone? She ended up alone after this game. BUT they left it open to a part 3. Idk if you saw the new home screen but the boat was at Catalina Island – meaning Abby made it to the Fireflies. My guess is Abby is gonna be looking for Ellie in part 3 for the cure – im sure there will be alot more involved tho. Just speculation. Probably will be in another 10 years tho, hopefully not.
We stan Abby. Good luck with your next showcase.
I feel Owen was the only one in Abbys group with a sense of morality. He's the one that told them not to hurt Ellie or Tommy because Manny and Jordan were quick to. I felt he reflected Abby's morale change and her reason to find the Fireflies and her reason to leave the WLF for good. Maybe people couldn't get behind him because of the Love triangle, but he was the most fleshed out of her group imo
Congratulations, Hanna! It’s been wonderful being on this journey with you. The melancholy and empty feeling of finishing this game is something I felt as well, but with time it has made me even more eager for a follow-up game. I would love to see Ellie excel from here.
She has faced so much tragedy, but I strongly believe she’s in the midst of deep healing. I hope she and Dina reconcile, even if it doesn’t mean they get back together.
Thank you for mentioning seeing our Comments. As part of a community, It definitely feels amazing knowing you interacted with your subs.
Thank you so much for the amazing game play.
Will always look forward to more entertaining videos.
Much Love
First of all thanks a lot for this wonderful let's play, I enjoyed it very much.
I am wondering a bit about your commentary to the ending. I think, your problems with the ending are a result of your deeply positive thinking (second chance ec.).
But this is not the way of thinking of Neill Druckman and his team. They created here something like an old greek tragedy. They show us, what bad circumstances can do with humans, how they influence their thoughts, how they make a lot of damage to their souls. And from this point of view they are not really responsible for what they are doing. I feel more, that Ellie, Abby and Joel had no choice to handle it differently.
I cannot blame Ellie for her problems to open herself to another person. She didn't learn that in her life. It was Joel, who gave her an instrument (literally) to communicate with him and later with Dina. Joel and Dina were the only people in the whole life of Ellie, who loved her for herself. And the Guitar was the key to give this love back.
And in the end she lost everything. She lost Dina, because her revenge was more important than her love to Dina. This is absolutely unforgivable. She lost Joel, before she could really told him that she loves him, even because it was hard for her to accept this for herself. Her last talk to Joel was only the beginning.
And in the end she lost the ability to play guitar. Playing the guitar reminded her to Joel. Playing the guitar catched Dina in the end. They had a song together.
So Ellie didn't only lost Joel and Dina. She lost also her instrument of remembering to them. And you can see the emtyness in her face.
She is 19 or about 20 and her life is over. With her problems to communicate she will not be able to create relashenships anymore. She will survive, she learned that very well in her life, but she will not be able to 'live'.
So this is the sadest ending I have ever seen in my life. It's so well prepared and the story is developed in such a high quality. For me TLOU is not only a game, it's a great peace of american literature.
I hope, you will think a bit about my opinion and maybe change your point of view about TLOU II and especially the ending.
I know, that was really a lot of text. But this game catched me….
Sorry for that.
Loved the journey with you. Excited for Red Dead!
So glad I found your channel at this point in your gameplay of Part II.
You are one of the most adept players; so many others try to have Ellie blast her way thru the resort to get to Abbey. They die too frequently.
I think feeling numb at the end is appropriate for the story. Ellie is likely also feeling numb even as she returns to the ranch and finds Dina gone. Ellie has a lot to process and it will take time.
I look forward to viewing your previous play-thrus and watching you future content.
