Control Review

Should You Buy in 2022?

Developers Remedy have this incredible knack of conscientiously telling a story in such an intriguing and contemplative way, that it demands you leave no stone unturned when navigating the world and the narrative that’s been woven into their creations. Other games Remedy have developed, like Alan Wake and Quantum Break are both of the same ilk and Control is no different – they all leave such a narratively long last impression after your first playthrough. These games are such a joy to unravel the mysteries within the well-structured story lines but Control really doubles down on the mystery side of things though.

The question is though, how does the gameplay stand alongside such a strong narrative?

  1. I loved Control, but it was just shy of being great to me. The combat was super cool but peaked early, as you said, and the skill tree felt really uninspired. Just think with all this craziness and weirdness where they could have gone with it…an ability that allows you to morph the room…teleportation… There are tons of cool things they could have done with it that would have fit the theme and vibe better. Instead we get damage buffs and such.

The combat got repetitious when trying to explore and the ending was a big fat pile of disappointment. I disagree about the architecture though. The flat gray modern office building is such a contrast to what goes on in there, it totally worked for me. And the game gave me serious 90's X-Files vibes, which is a huge plus in my book!

Still playing AC:Valhalla and its DLCs. It never ends! But I enjoy the historic time period.

  2. Legendary game. Fantastically Dark House and vibe. Probably in my top 20 of best games ever made. Can't Wait for Control 2.

  3. I feel like Remedy have completely changed over the years. At first they took a generic story like Max Payne and made it insanely fun, and now they have incredible stories like Quantum Break and Control but made them boring.

  4. Yeah I couldn’t really get into this game. The setting is boring and looks all the same. Jesse is kinda boring. It was well made and I don’t hate it but I will never finish this game. I have better stuff to finish and have finished since this title

  5. The Steam Deck got me back into gaming as a middle aged man with kids. Since my last platform was the NES, I love videos like this that fill in the last 30 years of gaming for me.

  6. I just got Control and Disco Elysium combo for $17 on Steam, very satisfied, sale still on, btw.

  7. Dear Respawned, i wanted to share my expierience for that you might get a new perspective. — I actually started playing Control again, as my first playthrough was kinda rough on a GTX960 back then. My old system could run on low to mid settings it but now i‘m noticing what i actually missed. Recently got myself a top tier RTX Card and it‘s just fantastic from a visual and gameplay standpoint for me now. [Visuals:] It obviously makes intense use of raytracing. Often a bit too much, but overall i really love to see all those lights/movements/powers being realisticallx reflected on surfaces. It really carries the supernatural vibe for me. I understand your opinion about the architecture and environment design. I‘m kinda surveying it from the perspective, that the boring office buildings and hallways actually create the contrast to the more more bended, visually astonishing areas. If the overall areas would be colourful, exiting and interesting it would maybe not have that effect, as there‘d be not so much of a contrast to the paranormal events. Also the overall greyscale makes the enemies stand out and be easily recognisable in the whole chaos. [Gameplay:] This is where i feel the biggest difference between playing with 20-30 FPS and running it completely fluently. It‘s just so satisfying being so nimble and yet to destructive with the different powers, throwing stuff at peoples heads, throwing people at stuff and so on. As you said you CAN play through the game only using the telekinetic power but where the game isn‘t giving you a lot of option you can make your own! My playstyle is going full close range and using the Shield Dash for defensive movement. You could also try only mainly using and maxing your melee attack to spice the difficulty up. It can be really fun. [Overall] I‘m really enjoying my second playthrough at the moment and must say it‘s one of the best triple A game i‘ve ever played. It makes you feel like a superhero without labelling it as that. For my taste Control definately scratches the itch i always wanted to play in videogames.

  8. I actually got it for free with the Epic games Launcher A while Back, just Contemplating on if i download it

  9. I spent the entire game without unlocking the shield. Didn’t even know it was available until after completing story 🤷🏻‍♂️

  10. You need to play This game with settings maxed and full Ray tracing on a 4K HDR screen. I’m playing it on a 48” LG OLED tv powered by an RTX 3080Ti. The game looks incredible. I suspect the design and color pallet would be far worse in SDR on some crap screen.

  11. Great review. I just wish you wouldn’t curse. Hard to watch you in public when you’re doing that but fine attention to detail.

  12. THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYBODY DAT WANTS TO PLAY THIS GAME DO NOT REPLAY ANY MISSION AFTER U HAVE COMPLETED ANY DLC CONTENT.
Why u might ask? Bcuz whatever u didn't have BEFORE u completed the main story WILL BE GONE. For example if u was level 5 during mission 3 and u completed the game at level let's just say 40 whatever u had during mission 3 is what you're gonna start with again. If u decide to go back to where u completed the game whatever u had will be there. When it comes to DLC content whatever u didn't have before u completed the game WILL BE GONE once replay a mission. Idk if he said it in this video but just in case I'm telling u now.

  13. A strong 6-7 for me on PC. Visuals and controls are great, gameplay and powers feel similar to Infamous Second Son. Side content is impressive, but the main quest is so anti-climatic. There's intrigue but no payoff, all the unique bosses are reserved for side quests. Combat can get too easy and I never cared for the leveling up and loot stuff.

If in the sequel they rebalanced your powers and enemies, combat was tighter and maybe punished you a little bit for relying on the same telekenesis throw tactic all the time.
I think it be a game worth replaying. Also please have a final boss next time lol.

I do think the game as is, is worth getting if you're 3rd person adventure/shooter games like uncharted. Its got plenty of spectacle and wtf moments. Decent length with dlc included.

  14. I played and finished the game there were a few high points but overall I liked it less than quantum break. On the other hand I’m a sucker for at least decently told story with time manipulation, and to me QB was at least a good story.

  15. @7:00These aren't fair criticisms. These are very strong abilities. How and when you decide to use them should be a compromise and somewhat risky for the reward of using them. Where's the fun in hiding behind a 10ft wide shield of concrete AND being able to dispatch enemies at no risk? How quickly would the level be over if you could just instantly possess enemies on-sight? There has to be a balance between offensive/ defensive tactics. C'mon, man!
