Great RPGs are rare but this one truly managed to grab my imagination. With it’s combination of good action and a cool island, it’s certainly fun, but is it worth buying? Find out in my review of Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dada!

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is an action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom, published by Nihon Falcom in Japan and NIS America worldwide. A part of the Ys series, it first released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita in July 2016, with worldwide releases for PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, and Nintendo Switch following later. Passing the archipelagos of the Gaete Sea located south of mainland Greek, Adol is on a passenger ship called the Lombardia that is headed from Xandria to the continent of Eresia. However, the ship is attacked and sunk by a giant creature, and when Adol wakes up, he realizes he landed on the shore of a cursed island known as the Isle of Seiren. On his search for other survivors, he teams up with the noblewoman Laxia von Roswell and fisherman Sahad Nautilus to help his fellow castaways to survive and find a way to get off the island. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is an action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective. Players control multiple main characters, each with their own play styles. The island is open world, allowing for exploration anywhere. While playing, an abundance of materials will be collected from defeating local fauna, flora and opening by chests. These materials can be crafted into items that the player can use on their journey, such as healing items and stronger weapons.

  1. This game is such a perfect example of how gameplay is king. Just having fun is all that matters and it nails the action! Thanks for watching and liking this video. 😀

  2. I'm puzzled as to how you thought the Dana story wasn't done well, but nevertheless I agree wholeheartedly with everything else you've said. It really is a great game.

  3. This game surprised me. Being a huge YS fan I love the old ones, like Felghana, Origins, Naphistim etc, I like the side scrolling or isometric top down view. But when I saw Cel ceta and YS 8's graphics and team based combat, I thought I wouldn't like it. Now in Chapter 4 of this game I think it's probably the best in the series, although I still think Oath in Felghana has the best boss fights.

  4. From what I recall, the non-playable dream sequences are only a handful of minutes long each, especially at the beginning of the game, where they were probably only one or two minutes, max.

  5. Why you call the monsters people lol just joking Dreamcast Guy. Have been a huge fan of yours for years lol just funny hearing the monsters called people.

  6. I swear I've played a game on ps4 that was so much like this one that their should be a lawsuit. Unfortunately I can't recall the name.

  7. That's such a bad review, the story of Dana is skippable? That's the main story! That's why I kept playing, to know about the island.. To each his own I guess

  8. In retrospect, the serial killer arc actually serves to showcase that human conflict is silly in the face of nature, since….

    SPOILERS

Nemo was claiming that his actions were to give the castaways an evil to team up against in order to bring them together, but in actuality the threat of the island had already brought them together well enough (and continued to do so long after he was gone) and his actions were actually driving them apart with suspicion and fear because he was just a sadist with delusions of grandeur, right up until he found out that dinosaurs don't care about something as petty as moral philosophizing.

  9. Now that it's part of PS plus extra I think your review has helped me take a chance on it 🙂

  10. "this game is easy, i never died once"
meanwhile me halfway through an inferno mode playthrough… lets just say ignorance is bliss… : ^ ]
