I honestly knew he was dead from the first Aniki, but even then I cried, and he is one of my fav characters of the series. People saying he is the same as Shinji, no, just no, we didn't knew a lot about Shinji, we knew he respected Kiryu and had a girfriend, the end. They build Rikiya character and all his relationships, even the story of his tatoo is relevant, is far from been the same.

It's like how many times does kiyru leave the bad guys with there guns after the fight at this point this death was on kiyru got his gf killed in Yakuza 1 the same way and worst part of his death he had a gf to take back home the one with the hand scar I was 💔💔💔 at the death scene and I blame kiyru for never learning after Yakuza 1

Come on, comments. I like Shinji as much as the next guy, but this whole idea that these new characters are just sad rip-offs is insane to me. Rikiya's got far more personality and more screen-time than Shinji ever did, even after the backstory they added for Shinji in Yakuza 0 years later. He's also a friend to Kiryu in an entirely different context than Shinji was. Shinji was an underling Kiryu took under his wing during his life as a criminal. Rikiya's a kid who just happens to be yakuza, but has been helping Kiryu with his new life as a man trying to get away from the life and take care of his orphanage. Rikiya's got a fiery but caring personality with Kiryu and the kids and a love for his hometown. Shinji… liked soaplands. Kiryu made it plainly clear that he doesn't wanna be in the Ryudo family, but they have this bond now as friends after everything involving Saki, the land, as well as Haruka and the other kids, and they're as much a part of Okinawa that Kiryu wants acceptance from as any other local, so is it really so impossibly out-of-character for a man like Kiryu to move on with his loss from the previous games and meet new people that he wants to protect? He never forgets about them, but should he just be sulking about Shinji, Kazama, Nishiki, Reina, and Yumi for the rest of his life? That's some Max Payne levels of brooding that just doesn't fit him.
Didn't like that. Felt like the writers only killed him off for the feels, not because it suited the story. But hey, early Yakuza stories…
