A fragmentary, misunderstood masterpiece, meticulously crafted and laced with imperfection; a narrative half-resolved, a broken ouroboros. However its framed, the waves of post-release critique surrounding the ninth and final instalment of Kojima Productions’ techno-stealth thriller series often describes the game as brilliant despite it finding new and creative ways to dumbfound its audience, recontextualise plotlines and retcon character arcs along the way. These points of view are largely at odds with Metal Gear Solid V’s near-universally perfect review scores. For the most part, reviewers praise The Phantom Pain’s immersive open world, its innovative gameplay fostering player freedom.
This feature isn’t an attempt to demystify MGSV’s discombobulating narrative though; there’re already plenty of feature length analyses and series-spanning deep dives dissecting Metal Gear’s tapestried narrative floating round the internet. No, instead, this feature places MGSV’s prowess as a stealth title firmly between the crosshairs, taking aim at the strengths propping Big Boss aka Venom Snake’s final foray as the zenith of stealth games. So, let’s get started.

For all this game lacked in the story department and overall plot
The gameplay of this game remains unbeaten
I can't believe this game was from ps3 Era. My favorite franchise and then splinter cell and hitman and syphon filter.
after 7 years. its still a good game. but the story is garbage. especially snake not talking at all. and the game is full of "made of kojima" brand. 🤣💦
I reinstalled it today, I didn't know it was the 7th year anniversary, I haven't got the Raiden suit yet
The most perfect unfinished game ever. Love the MGS franchise
Wonder if there is anyone else who didn't enjoy the game like me? It clearly lacked the intesity of it's predecessor. Travelling long distance on that stupid horse 🐎🐎 kinda diluted the intensity for me.
1000 ish hours in this game and every time i keep going to it, im in the end game with nothing more to develop….. and still i love this masterpiece!
The fox engine is better than the engine that run mgs4. I played 5, but mgs, mgs3, and mgs4 is my favorite.
Dude i literally just bought MGS5 like 2 days ago lol
"Immersive openworld"?
You mean the empty spaces between the immersive, well designed mission areas?
Best stealth action game ever made IMO. The story is convoluted and nonsensical at times but the gameplay and mechanics are more engaging than any other game I can think of.
One of the greatest games ever made and one of the greatest experiences. I remember buying the MGS5 gaming manual a year ago and planning each mission; it was so immersive. Ended up getting the platinum and what an experience it was. Quiets theme gets me every time.
I MISS EVERYTHING.
Best video game series ever! Period
Manhunt has some good stealth mechanic.
i know this is not a finished game but this game is the perfect way to end the best video game franchise of all time
MGS 1,2 AND 3 ARE BEING REMADE 👌👌
its £2 on xbox store now just bought it
still playing this awesome game. The gameplay is just pure perfection. And the overall feeling of the game is chilling melancholy.
Probably the best Stealth Action gameplay in a game. Story was still pretty good too, even though it was short.
Lol 😂 7 years and can’t get my soldiers to make nothing good cuz my level gotta be higher than 30
!!
I'm playing mgs5 online there's a good set of player come play ppl
Sniper Elite 5 has some pretty stealthy moments.
I would honestly expect this game to be talked about by everyone for years.
Boring as fk unfinished game and I have over 100hrs on it
