“Heaven’s Gate” (上天の光 Jōten no hikari, lit. Light of the Sky) is a quest and storyline in Legend of Mana. It is the last part of a series of events that include Matilda, Irwin, Escad and Daena (Faerie Arc).
Matilda (マチルダ Machiruda) is a major character from the Faerie story arc of Legend of Mana. Born into a family of priests in Gato, Matilda is a childhood friend of Daena, Escad and Irwin. As a child, she questioned the fate that awaited her as a result of the lineage that she was born into, a fact that proved instrumental in causing her to become immensely attracted to Irwin and his free way of life. A decade prior to the events of Legend of Mana, Matilda’s elemental powers were taken by Irwin after their temple escape was stopped by Escad. She has aged drastically since then.
Matilda later reappears in Sword of Mana as the last wisdom that can be acquired by players. She functions as the wisdom of Light in this game.
Daena (ダナエ Danae) is a major character from the Faerie story arc of Legend of Mana. A monk soldier who protects Gato’s temple, Daena is childhood friends with Escad, Matilda and Irwin, but especially adores Matilda like her own sister. She assumes the form of an anthropomorphic cat, in a similar vein to the Nuns of Gato Grottoes.
Escad (エスカデ Esukade) is a major ally character from the Faerie story arc of Legend of Mana. Born into the Liotte family of Holy Knights, Escad pledges to fight for the cause of justice with an overbearing sense of righteousness.
Legend of Mana (聖剣伝説 レジェンド·オブ·マナ Seiken Densetsu Rejendo obu Mana) is the first Mana game not part of the main series.
While incorporating action role-playing game elements from the three games which preceded it, Legend of Mana has its own distinct style of gameplay. Most notably, it gives the player the ability to shape the game’s world of Fa’Diel according to his or her desires, a system which was incorporated through the use of “artifacts”, which are gained as the player progresses through the game. The player uses the artifacts to create different towns, dungeons, etc., called “Lands”, to venture to and explore. This creates a non-linear gameplay, since the game is driven by a series of what would be considered side-quests in other games. Legend of Mana features three different plots which can occur simultaneously, and which do not necessarily need to be completed for the player to finish the game.
Legend of Mana was a financial success in Japan. While the game garnered considerable praise for its graphics and presentation, many critics and fans were turned off by the game’s lack of a main storyline.
An HD remaster is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam as of June 24, 2021
