As someone who prefers the Monster Hunter Stories series to the mainline Monster Hunter games, I was pretty excited to check out the demo of Monster Hunter Stories 3 to see how it plays and how it performs on the Steam Deck, and I’m happy to report that neither disappoints!
Monster Hunter Stories 3 Demo – Gameplay Impressions
As far as the gameplay of Monster Hunter Stories 3 goes, it’s pretty similar to the previous entries in the series. Rather than hunting monsters, you play as a Ranger/Rider, whose aim is to co-exist with “Monsties” to the best of their ability, and maintain balance in the ecosystem.
Combat is turn-based and features the same Rock-Paper-Scissors battle formula, with Power, Technical, and Speed attacks each countering one of the others. It’s a basic system, but it’s tried and tested and at least presents balanced battles. You can also target different body parts of monsters in order to weaken them, as well as synchronize attack types with party members to deal bonus damage, so there is some depth to the combat system, although it remains simple enough to not be overwhelming.

When it comes to the storyline, we don’t get too far into it in the demo, but it certainly seems a bit more intriguing than the 2 previous entries in the series, taking a more serious tone given this is a “Stories” spin-off title, which are usually fairly light-hearted. The story essentially revolves around 2 kingdoms at odds with one another who must form an alliance to fight an increasing number of monsters infected by crystals that turn them feral. But it seems like there’ll be a couple of twists to the plot beyond that when we finally get to see the final game.

And of course, as a staple in the Monster Hunter franchise, Stories 3 does indeed feature cooking, which gives you bonuses to different aspects of gameplay depending on what you decide to eat. You can also improve your equipment by forging upgrades.
The systems in place here are simpler than those in the mainline Monster Hunter games, but Monster Hunter Stories 3 is looking to be the best in the sub-series yet, in my opinion. If you’re after a game where you can sit back and take your time, with simple turn-based combat combined with an intriguing storyline, and some pretty visuals, Monster Hunter Stories 3 should be added to your wishlist for when it launches next month!
Monster Hunter Stories 3 Demo – Steam Deck Performance Tested
The demo of Monster Hunter Stories 3 actually ran better on the Steam Deck than I expected. Although the game only supports 16:9 resolutions like 1280×720, so we do get black borders, the controller support is great, and performance is also pretty good.
We can run on the “High” Preset with FSR3 on Balanced to play at 30 FPS, which gives us all the visual niceties, with smooth shadows and extras like ambient occlusion.

High Preset (FSR3 Balanced, 30 FPS Cap)
If you want some extra frames, you can use the “Low” preset, which actually still looks decent, but you will lose some clarity around the edges of shadows, for example. We can push the Steam Deck up to 40 FPS with these lower settings, however. We do still have to run FSR3 on Balanced.

Power draw was in the high teens with either option, so I would expect around 2.5 hours of battery life on a Steam Deck OLED. On the lower side, but the game does autosave fairly often, and isn’t too difficult to play in smaller chunks of time.
