Back in the day, I used to be all over survival games. These were some of my favorite games to play with friends. Working together to gather resources, build bases, and set up automation to make our work easier was always a blast. Make it space or futuristic themed, and I was immediately hooked. That’s what brought me to StarRupture. This new game, developed by the same team behind Green Hell, hooked me in with its premise, and it shows a lot of promise so far. So, with it launching today, I just had to test it on the Steam Deck.

StarRupture

Despite being an early access survival game, StarRupture was actually more playable on the Steam Deck than I expected. It isn’t perfect, and it doesn’t show some warning signs as more buildings are constructed, but I expected much worse, and I would consider it within the realm of playability.

There was only one time during my time playing when the frame rate went below 30. I was looking at my base at a very specific angle that dropped the frame rate down. However, even when looking at my entire base from further away, it’s stuck above 30 FPS. This is all on the medium graphics preset with FSR upscaling at quality, which means we still have a good amount of wiggle room to improve performance further.

With this being an early access game, I didn’t want to spend too much time going through and optimizing the game when it’s still in heavy development. For a recommendation, I would set the graphics to medium and change FSR to balanced. Along with a 30 FPS cap, they should keep the game relatively smooth, especially in early to mid-game gameplay. I haven’t had the game long enough to test the late game, but with the large amount of buildings, with possible multiplayer, it may just be too much to handle right now.

There are only two other issues I have with playing this game on the Steam Deck right now: gamepad support and text size. The game does not have controller support, so it will need to be played with keyboard and mouse controls. And to play this game effectively, you will have to modify the default controller configuration to add in hotkeys, like the B to access the building menu and H to bring up the Med Gun. You also may want to change up the configurations a little bit to make playing more comfortable. It’s not uncomfortable with the default, but it can definitely be improved.

As for the text size, it is extremely small. Subtitles are impossible to read well; I had to squint to actually read the menu UI. The game doesn’t have many settings to play around with just yet, due to it being newly released and in early access, so it’ll be something that you have to deal with for the time being.

Still, if you can look past these issues, StarRupture is decently playable on the Steam Deck. It performs better than I expected at medium settings in a 30 FPS lock, and the controls aren’t horrible. There’s definitely work that needs to be done, but in the end, it is nice to see a brand new space theme survival game that is still under heavy development working as well as it is on the go.
