As I’ve said many times, and will say many more times, The Legend of Heroes series is one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. I love the way that they use each entry to further along the same story, while referencing past events and bringing in old characters. I’ve been having a blast playing through the new Daybreak sub-series, and finally, the conclusion is coming very soon. I couldn’t be more excited for Trails beyond the Horizon, and with it releasing on January 15, we have less than one month to go.

To get us ready, publisher NIS America has released a story demo, letting us play through the game’s opening sequence that will carry over to the main game. The demo is available now to try out, so I decided to take the initiative and see how the opening of the game is running on the Steam Deck. The last two games in the sub-series ran like a charm on the Deck, so I went in having high hopes, and for the most part, I’m not disappointed.
By default, Trails beyond the Horizon uses a combination of medium to high settings with a resolution scale of 100%. Most of its other features, like screen, space reflections, and volumetric lighting, are turned onto their default settings; well, we do have high shadow resolution. The game looks amazing at these settings, and if you’re going to be playing at 30 frames per second, this will be great. However, it’s not going to be 100% stable above that.

While most of the fighting in both real-time and turn-based combat can handle higher frame rates at the default settings, there are still some attacks that will drop. In real-time combat, I found drops when using stunning attacks, one after another, especially when Altina was involved. And in turn-based combat, some Crafts, like Van’s Aerial Slash, would see drops. With this being a demo, I wasn’t able to investigate many different areas that we will see in the full game, but I did know that some areas they did drop below 40 frames per second depending on the camera angle.

So, based on this, I would probably say that the game is going to be very playable on the Steam Deck, but it will require some changes if you want to run at higher frame rates. Because the default is towards the higher side, we do have a lot of wiggle room to save on frame rate. Changing things like resolution scale, shadow, resolution, and reducing volumetric lighting or screen space reflections, could all help make the frame rate more stable at higher numbers.
Still, I would consider the performance to be a positive one when it comes to the Steam Deck. It still falls in line with performance in the Trails through Daybreak games, so I am quite optimistic about the full release. I have always loved this series, so I am very excited to see where this entry will take us next.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon can be wishlisted ahead of its January 15th release date.
