Ulfric Stormcloak is one of Skyrim’s most fascinating figures. A rebellious Nord Jarl, fighting against the Empire in a bid for Skyrim’s independence. Is he a hero, a villain or is it more complex? What’s going on with him, why is he the man he is and is he a threat to Skyrim or its saviour? In today’s video I endeavour to understand the man. I must say, the angst of tackling the subject knowing how hotly debated it is did make producing this video quite a longwinded experience, maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree. Nonetheless, I thought I’d grant my perspective.

  1. In summary:
Racist Nord Jarl intent on wiping out the Empire because he can’t see beyond his own bigotry for even a second to see that the Empire also hates the Thalmor. The end.

  2. He’s a nord supremacists. The Empire may suck for letting the Thalmor arrest Talos worshipers, but the Empire could defend the Skyrim against the Thalmor better than the storm clocks.

  3. The imperials may try to chop off my head, but the stormcloaks don't bother to unbind me. They tell me to jump through the roof while my hands are tied. Screw them.

  4. If Ulfric had asked Torygg, it goes differently. Especially with the assistance of Hammerfell, the Empire would have had a chance against the Thalmor.

  5. I sincerely hope you’ll cover our great General Tullius at some point in the future, to let both us Imperials and the Stormcloaks properly see both sides of the coin ^^ ♥️

  6. I always side with the storm cloaks. Felt like a weird Brexit analogy before its time so it was always fun to pick the controversial option. Plus the elves are dicks.

  7. Not having extensive irl novels about Skyrim is downright criminal! I barely found Skyrim volume 1 and it just contains the in game books's texts and immediatly ordered it for about 40 US Dollars I believe! I've read most if not all books in the game but I'd like to have a collection of REAL LIFE books about the game that I can open and immerse myself in

  8. it’s a crime that camelworks gets millions of views for their half-assed theorizing, and you cover the same topics with far more quality, sense, and stylish editing and get far less. I hope you get far more attention with time. Your videos and your steady, measured approach have been a comfort in some difficult personal times. Appreciate it all.

  9. Jumping in at the start, I can already tell I'm either going to love this or absolutely hate it. Let's see where it goes.

  10. Always side with the Empire. The Empire with Skyrim is the greatest threat against the Thalmor.

  11. Ulfric obviously sees the Dominion as the main bad guys he'll have to face, as seen after you complete the civil war on his side. He just thinks that the Empire is worse than the sum of its parts, the Cyrodiil mismanaged the first great war and was way too eager to sacrifice the provinces.

  12. I understand why Ulfric is mad but he’s going about it the wrong way he should ally with powers who are against The Aldmeri Dominion like The Redguards in Hammerfell and considering the discrimination The Wood Elves and the wood elves of Valenwood experience from The Thalmor I’m sure they’d support him but instead Ulfric for some reason doesn’t trust The Redguards or Wood Elves

  13. The thing about the discussion around Ulfric Stormcloak is that I feel like everybody talks about how Ulfric is shortsighted and his actions play right into the hads of the Thalmor, which is TRUE, but it's not like he is the only one, or even the most important character in the story to fall for this. I'd Argue the Emperor, in signing the White-gold concordat, fell for the same mistake.

I mean, why would a foreign power want to ban the worship of Talos if not stirr up this controversy in the first place? You can spend all day arguing that the law wasn't truly enforced, but it's exitence is a constant reminder that they had lost the war and their Empire didn't make decisions by themselves and had to respond to a foreign government. Not only that, but the fact that the redcloaks kept fighting and eventually got to keep their country serves as evidence that maybe if the empire had fought harder, they could have won. The White-gold concordat was WRITTEN with the explicit intent to sew division and strife within the Empire, in the hopes that the divided lands will later more easily fall to the Aldmery Dominion.

In the end of the day, if it is folly for Ulfric to start the civil war (and yes, it is) it was folly for the Emperor not to insist on terms that didn't naturally divide his country and expose the Empire's weakness. So, while Ulfric is playing on the hands of the Aldmery… So is the Empire.

And, hey, maybe it's innevitable. It may be that the structure of the empire and the vast array of interests that dispute the Emperor's attention were already breaking the empire from within for a while, and the Aldmery are just speedrunning that decay. Or not. But I really think it's unfair to put Ulfric as the cause of the downfall of the Empire in the hands of the Aldmery.

Ulfric is the symptom. Not the disease.
