The Saadia Vs Kematu Dilemma - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The ambiguous quest of “In My Time of Need” is a moment where The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim encourages you to decide between two parties without enough evidence nor information to come to a sound conclusion, in today’s video I intend to explore that in some detail.

  1. The one point that I have a hard time overlooking is what the prisoner says. "If you know that name, then you must know to meet him would be to meet your end." That certainly makes him sound like a ruthless killer. The prisoner seems to have less motivation to lie than Sasdia or Kematu. Moreover, Kematu's role as a killer for hire makes me think that he would still accept blood money from the Thalmor. Also, the argument that her urn in the crypt is just a bug seems weak. It is just as likely that it is intended to reveal the truth to the player after making the wrong choice. So, in the end I come down on the side of Saadia if I play that quest at all. All the ambiguity makes it an unsatisfying end either way.

  2. They're definitely both lying to some extent. Saadia and Kematu both mention the Thalmor as the side they're against which is too much of a coincidence in the middle of a civil war with one of the main driving forces being the Thalmor. I believe Saadia made a mistake and trusted someone who turned out to have bad intentions and thanks to her did some harm in Hammerfell. I don't believe she just straight up sided with the Thalmor as she could just goto them for aid I believe she was tricked by them instead.

  3. I forgot exactly which, but if you’re greedy, you can kill kematu right before or after he paralyzes Saadia outside the stables and get an extra monetary reward. Don’t think it was double though.

I think it’s after the paralysis, and the quest is technically over, Saadia will give you some more money. I could be mistaken.

  4. youtube just reccos me skyrim vidoes because i like them and i put them on in the background
i was so effing annoyed by your talking about nothing i had to stop what i was doing to write this
don't make videos to make videos
    make good videos
    this video is horrible
    unsubsribed

  5. The fact that she said the Thalmor are chasing her immediately gives her away. Hammerfell and the Redguards ceded from the Empire and the Thalmor. They hate the Thalmor and Saadia said she spoke out against the Thalmor which would be welcome in Hammerfell.

  6. I always thought that it made sense for Saadia to be in Skyrim because of their hatred to the thalmor. If she helped the dominion they would’ve rewarded her and possibly give her sanctuary in the summerset isles. Also the city she’s from would mean she would’ve travelled the whole province of Hammerfell while being an enemy to the rest of the province.

  7. To me this quest comes across as being partly a relic of an earlier design for Skyrim. Neither Saadia's nor Kematu's explanations make a lot of sense. For example, Saadia doesn't seem that old but she supposedly betrayed Taneth and Rihaad some 30 years ago? Of-course her story makes no sense because she is lying, but I mean that even hear lie doesn't seem to be well constructed. After all, the Thalmor were kicked out of Hammerfell and everyone knows this, so why would she get in trouble for speaking out against them? Then there is Kematu, who states that the resistance against the Thalmor is alive and well in Hammerfell… but what do they need to resist? The Thalmor withdrew from Hammerfell.

I think that, in an earlier vision for Skyrim that Hammerfell was partly or totally under Dominion occupation. Only in that case would Saadia's lie even make any sense at all and ditto' Kematu's explanation of what the Alik'r are doing.

  8. Saadia is obviously lying but the others don't even give their side of the story and try to bribe you. They don't even bother to lie. I believe there is no good side here. I prefer to take Saadia's side, she seem to be the lesser evil.

  9. I ended the quest by helping Kematu and as soon as he paralyzed her, I killed him and then her, win win.

  10. 26:49 i think that's the people of whiterun (Hilda) realized that she disappeared without a trace and put it in the hall of the dead as a commemoration

  11. The sad part about this quest is that if you like money (frankly you get this quest super early so you probably need it) you will want to kill all the alakhir for armor which is worth a ton

  12. Why would the empire think that hammerfell would join them in fighting the dominion after leaving in a huff? Haha TES 6 will open with Saadia’s execution.

  13. i sided with kematu, but he was not hauling saadia away and kept standing at the stable, so I killed him and took his gold. Then saadia woke up and started attacking me, then Lydia killed her.

  14. Shes one of the hottest character models on the game lmao side with her and kill the bros man they always willing to bribe and they are annoying pulling over all whiteruns women like the police

  15. She didn't mention she knew of the A'likr being arrested because she thought it was just another Redguard as it was most likely mentioned as such instead of as an "A'likr" in particular.

She is scarred from being attacked no less.

The A'likr have a damn hideout full of BANDITS. One of them tried to & did conspire to trespass in the first place stalking her all over again.

Iman is innocent & playing a long game for her family sake that she needs to stop playing….YESTERDAY.

  16. I'm a little late to the party but I gotta ask- what mods do you use to make your playthrough look like that?

  17. I didn't know any of the lore about Hammerfell the first time I did the quest, but even at the time I felt like they were both hiding too much for me to take either of them at their word. So I ended up deciding whose side I was on by determining who was causing the less harm while they were in Skyrim altogether. I ended up choosing Saadia's side for the sole reason that you can encounter Kematu's men abusing random women in their attempts to find her despite the fact it's pretty obvious that they know exactly which city she's hiding out in. I'm aware the event occurs every so often as a possible trigger to start the quest in case you missed them appearing in the city, however it still occurs even if the quest is technically active. For that reason I still count it as a mark against them.

Saadia on the other hand is just living a simple peasant life. She's integrated herself into the culture and even bonded with the locals enough to have a mother figure. She's not activity harming anyone and there's no tangible proof she's a Thalmor spy or something of the sort that we can find in game. She might be guilty of having a dark past but at the end of the day that's not my character's problem, and her current actions show she's not a looming threat to Skyrom. So she gets to live.

I do like scaring her by using her as bait for Kematu, though. If you lure her to the barn and then kill him before he can paralyze her you won't have her permanently hostile towards you. She'll yell at you for a moment until you explain it was a trap for Kematu and then she'll chill and give you a reward for helping her. And then you can loot Kematu for more gold. Narratively I like to do this because I think it allows the Dragonborn to get a point across that she's not the only one who can be deceiving, and lying to them might not end well for her.

For roleplay I think this is how I'll always determine which side I pick (depending on my characters morality), but I really enjoy videos like this to see more of the full picture. It definitely adds more life to the quest.

  18. I'm glad you pointed out the possibility that they're both lying. Other videos I've seen prop Kematu up as if he's some paragon of truth when I always thought he was as vague and deceptive as Saadia was.

  19. The writing team didn't create that part, so there's literally no answer to this question. Just create your own lore inside your role play. In my gameplay, Saadia is always innocent because Kematu just dissappears from the game anyway.

  20. Most recently I didn't side with Saadia because when I got the the guys in the cave I realized as a mage I didn't stand a chance against them, already had to reload cause I killed Lydia and didn't want to end up like that couch porn meme. Both sides are super sketch though.

  21. Still haven't watched but her story made no fucking sense even for my undeveloped 17 year old brain. The Thalmor needing Alik'ri of all people to help them do their bidding in Skyrim? The Alik'ri on their part agreeing to help out the Thalmor, when they are literally just done beating the shit out of them for having the balls to show up in Hammerfell? Plus she's super sketchy and needs information carved out of her by force while the bloke is perfectly open about the whole thing. He could clearly have called "the thalmor" once he confirms shes the girl

  22. Saadia looking young is no surprise.

Nobles have better food, medical care, and access to moisturizer. Also, Black don't crack; it's common for black people to look younger than there age.

  23. I think thry are both liars. If Saadia is a traitor the Thalmor would be involved, at least a file, and how does Kamatsu know she's in the area but not how she looks or anything? And why is Kamatsu with bandits? Stormcloaks would love to get rid of a filthy elf traitor.

However Saadia is just playing barmaid, Kamatsu is harassing women, breaking Whiterun law, and helping bandits who could murder innocents. The only one i can prove is a problem is the one i take out.
Also the cave fight was fun.

  24. 1) agree to help Saadia
    2) say you'll lure her to the stables
    3) deal with Kematu before he paralyzes Saadia
    4) get the money from Saadia
    5) use Saadia to power up the Ebony Blade

  25. Well late to this, but I am surprised by how many people are siding with the CIA in illegal extradition of Julian Assange in the comments

  26. Due to an unfortunate bug, I thought Kematu was in the wrong for the longest time. The first time I did this mission, when I attacked the bandits in the chamber next to theirs, Kematu and his men attacked me. The second time I did this mission, I think it was my fault for using the Werewolf roar. The second time cemented my idea that they were hostile. After a few replays, I was confused as to why Kematu’s men didn’t attack me. I thought it was a bug but then I went with it and realized that, I should have been siding with Kematu all along.

  27. You're bending over backwards to disbelieve Saadia and excuse the massive holes in Kematu's story. The truth is, they're obviously both lying. They're both spinning whatever story they think they need to to get you on their side. Neither story is believable, and that's by design – there is no correct answer, because the developers didn't want there to be a correct answer. But while they're both lying, one of them is a barmaid in a tavern, and the other is living living with bandits and sending his people out to harass random women on the road. One is a productive member of society, the other is an active threat to society.

  28. I think the situation that happened was probably a misunderstanding. The details aren't as important as your intentions.

I've done both, but I sided with Saadia this past time—not because she's "a pretty face," but because she's all alone. She chose to move away from her past and find a line of work where she would feed the hungry, giving back to people. The nobles/Alik'r are the establishments after her. Likely corrupt, if they meddle with bandits and murder. In times when I've sided with the Alik'r, when they capture her, I can't help but feel like something is wrong. Saadia has reason to lie to you, she's protecting her privacy. Just because she's pretty doesn't mean she's using your masculinity against her. If you play as a woman, she'll say the same things. The Alik'r in prison says to know Kematu by name means "to meet your end?" Yeah… sounds like a great guy. Even listening to him sounds like talking to a manipulator. From now on, I will always help Saadia when playing as a hero.

  29. Kematu: Don't allow yourself to be fooled by a pretty face. You're better than that.

Gay Dragonborn: Oh my gosh… you're right. (Unsheathes sword)

    Kematu: NOOOOOOO

Gay Dragonborn: That'll show you to assume sexual orientation.

  30. I always helped sadia but recent playthrough i chose to help kematu and at the end they told me not to be foolished by pretty face. In todays world it would translate to " dont simp for of thots" im so happy that i chose right

  31. I always sided with Saadia until I read about how much Hammerfell hates the Dominion. I never even questioned my decision, because she's doing honest labor in an inn, contributing to the local economy, and Kematu is hiding out in a cave among bandits and abandoned a man to die in a cell for not being the "best". But you're right, it's more than meets the eye, and Saadia is much more inconsistent.
