Astro Bot: Rescue Mission: 1:57

  1. the scale of the bosses/big brother in vr was definitely spectacle i have not experienced elsewhere. i love the feeling of a 1v1 the final boss brings.

  2. Tbh, Imo astro bot did deserve the GOTY (imo. I did not play the VR title, i knew about it though). The game having so much of common with its level themes, like being almost 1:1, with some level puzzles as well and the MOST basic enemies being the same with the same exact attack pattern makes me a bit sad for the older players. They could have added more basic enemies that jump out at you, but oh well. I would have 100% liked to see different kind of themes though. A ground pound move could have also been a nice addition.

  3. I like to play Astrobot Rescue mission, I even have a key but I don't want to buy a PSVR when I have a quest 2.

  4. The shrinking mechanic has been around for some time. DK 64 has it as the gimmick for a whole character (Tiny Kong). On topic, I am playing my first Astro Bot (Playroom ps5) and having a blast. I'll get to the full ps5 game eventually.

  5. I adored Astro Bot Rescue Mission, but since I've now sold my PSVR1, I would love to be able to play it still. It'll never happen, but I would instantly buy a PCVR port of Astro Bot Rescue Mission, and it'd be so great with a headset that has decent tracking as I always had issues with PSVR1. But I can see that the heavy reliance on DS4 features would make it very difficult to port over without fundamental changes to the gameplay.

  6. 4:25 see even the shrinking mechanic is a thing in In Takes Two, which i realize more and more everyday is a critically underplayed game considering how its probably the best and most ingenious 3D platformer of the past half-decade 😭

  7. Omygosh Jon I’m so glad you made this video. I literally just got the Platinum for this game. I literally agreed with everything you said in this. I’ve always wanted to play it since Andre from the GX days talked about it, but I couldn’t buy the Vr back then. So glad I finally bought and played it!

  8. I was really sad, when i realized they didn't make a vr2 upgrade…
Well i still have the vr1 but never played it yet xD so at least nothing is stopping me 🤔

  9. I love both Rescue Mission and the PS5 game, and I also hope we get a sequel where the developers can go crazy with a bunch of new ideas

  10. I wanted to play this game for years and saw a used PSVR a couple weekends ago. I took the plunge and absolutely fell in love with this game. I've never played anything quite like it and the use of VR is great without being disorienting.

  11. No wonder we don't get Jon's "Hot Take Time" these past couple videoes. THIS is is his magnum opis Hot Take yet!

  12. Even Pizza could be called "fresh" if you haven't had it in a decade.

I suspect Astro Bot is the first 3d platformer a ton of people have played in ages and ages.

Not everyone buys Nintendo hardware. If you grew up entirely in the PlayStation, or even Xbox and PC, ecosystems then this indeed is a refreshing change of pace from the kind of games that get promoted.

Most folk are surface level gamers. No shade. But they only know and play the most visible and heavily promoted stuff right? They simply don't cross paths with small Indy games like a Yooka-Laylee because they're not latch key hanging off of every promotional event and trailer released like a "hardcore" gamer does.

They don't hear about Cavern of Dreams or A Hat in Time, and even if they moused over it in a store page they're not stopping to see what it is because there's no marketing machine pointing them to it, no positive word of mouth that breaks through from the deeper more insular parts of fandom to a mainstream audience.

To that end Astro Bot is really the first major, heavily marketed, first party, non-Nintendo 3d platformer since when? Blinx the Time Sweeper?

I'm not even sure that counts either. We're talking pure platformers here, so even Ratchet games don't count.

Astro Bot WAS refreshing. Just not to 3d platformer fans.

Oh and I actually forgot to say, the VR Astro Bot also doesn't count since no one played it. It being the same exact thing as the new one is besides that point. Existing isn't enough, people need to know about and play it. Astro Bot was "new to them" despite the three other Astro Bot games.

  13. Astro Bot Rescue Mission is the best VR game to date after Half-Life Alyx. Unfortunately I sold my PSVR. I hope they release a PC version. But it's unlikely they will ever do.

  14. At least with the music, I dont mind Bot reusing alot of Rescue Mission and Playroom music simply because alot may not have ever played them (moreso RM), so people now being exposed to these bangers in a game people actually WILL play is pretty great imo

  15. I'm glad someone made this video – it's just that frustrating thing where most people who played Astro Bot don't know the REAL crown jewel of a platformer they missed out on. Rescue Mission really is this generation's Mario 64 except the lack of influence and players. It felt like they really had something valuable for platforming over Nintendo. I get why Team Asobi made the shift to a regular PS5 game, but not following up on the Rescue Mission format will likely mean the demise of VR for Playstation

  16. I guess people calling Astrobot fresh isn't really that different from people calling Mario Wonder fresh.

Like as a 2D platformer fan, I felt that way about Mario Wonder. People acted like everything it added since NSMBU was new ground for 2D platformers when I've most certainly seen a lot of it before. Challenge Stages in Kirby's Return to Dream Land (heck, Kirby: Canvas Curse did it prior, but I understand people not knowing that since they were exclusive to Rainbow Run), badges in Yoshi's Woolly World, background and foreground elements which were a part of a lot of different games including VB Wario Land, DKCR, 3DS Kirby (I feel it's at it's best here), and modern Classic Sonic games (even if Mania only did it for one level). Mario Wonder is by all means a polished game, but it didn't break much ground, it just brought Mario up to speed with the rest for the most part.

  17. I picked up a PS4 and PSVR second hand for Christmas, and it's so much fun.

Do a PSVR retrospective Jon! Tell me what I've been missing out on.

  18. Thanks for the video. I'm sad there weren't more 3D platformers on 3DS cuz 3D vision DOES change how 3D platformers feel significantly. Wish this game wasn't locked to PSVR…!

  19. These games play similarly to where it was a mistake for me to play them in close succession. Some of the enemies and even the music seemed like it was reused? I think Astro Bot is great, but the core mechanics (aside from powerups) feel largely unchanged.

  20. I'd honestly compare the Astro Bot Rescue Mission to Astro Bot with something more like Lucky's Tale to Super Lucky's Tale, if anything.

Also, I've owned Astro Bot Rescue Mission since they made it free during the stay at home program Sony did, where they gave everyone free PS4 games during the start of Covid, and it's also how I got the PS5 version of Horizon Zero Dawn for essentially 10 bucks.

Although I've never played Rescue Mission, hearing you say you got PSVR1 for like 30 bucks is probably a good sign for me to get one soon to play it.
