Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura has released a new letter for fans in celebration of the 15th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. In the message, Nomura explains the significance of the Crossroads, a motif which has appeared across the Kingdom Hearts series in games such as Chain of Memories, Birth by Sleep, Union χ, and Kingdom Hearts III. The motif has its roots in American folklore, with the story of blues musician Robert Johnson, who is said to have met the devil at a crossroads and sold his soul to become the world’s greatest guitar player. The Crossroads also has implications for Kingdom Hearts IV, as Sora has been seen within a world resembling Shibuya, standing at the famous Shibuya Crossing. This is one of the only pieces of Kingdom Hearts IV news fans have received since its announcement trailer dropped in April 2022, almost three years ago.
