Saying he didn’t know he had caught it in his glove is a inaccurate statement
Playing third base years ago, a batter hit a line drive to the shortstop side. I just dove and stuck my glove out and it buried straight into the pocket. I didn't really know I'd caught it till after I hit the ground.
I had some oakley mframe mumbos in highschool that helped catch many balls that would have been lost in the sun.

I’ve had this happen to me playing shortstop. Saw the ball go up into the sun, never saw it come down. Had my glove and empty hand out and it fell into my empty hand. Was able to hold onto it.
