While on a walk I saw a transient man standing on the corner.
(散歩してると曲がり角に男性がいた)
And immediately I reached into my pocket.
(私はすぐポケットに手を伸ばした)
Not so I could grab money or anything like that.
(お金を掴むとかではなく)
But so I could get my phone.
(携帯を取り出した)
You know so I could fake text or pretend like I was listening to music.
(メールや音楽を聴いてるふりをするため)
‘cause I figured my persistence to keep my distance would
(距離を置きたい気持ちでいると)
Make it hurt less when I ignored his existence.
(彼を無視しても痛みが軽減されるかと)
At least for me anyway.
(私がそう思ってると)
But then suddenly a very peculiar smell emanating from the man invaded my nostrils.
(突然 男が発する独特な臭いが私の鼻についた)
It reminded me of all the things that our culture deems worthy of throwing away.
(それは我々の文化が捨てると判断している全てのもの)
And the irony is that’s the same way that we would treat him.
(皮肉なことにそれは彼への扱いと同じ)
But then inside my soul something said,
(しかし心の声に従った)
“Brandon put your pride aside and go talk to that man,” So I did.
( 「プライドを捨てて彼に話しかけろ」)
I asked if he could share with me a bit of a story.
(「話を聞かせて」と尋ねた)
All he could do was say, “Glory, Hallelujah of course I can”
(彼の返答は「ええ、ハレルヤ、もちろん」)
He told me of a man who had everything.
(全てを手に入れた男について話してくれた)
The people bowed down at his feet.
(人は男にひれ伏し)
And they allowed their praises to raise

his statue to nothing less than God reincarnated in human flesh.
(彼の像は人間に生まれ変わった神)
Where I’m from that’s the pharaoh complex
I’m pretty sure but…
(私の地元では暴君で知られてるが)
You see, the issue with towering above all has never been that climb up.
(人の上に立つことは問題ではない)
But that cataclysmic fall.
(落ちる時が問題)
Back down to humility in which most don’t survive.
(人は謙虚になると生き残れず)
And I imagine him losing everything.
(全てを失うだろう)
And he told me, “Young man don’t be foolish”
(彼は言った「若造よ 愚かだ」)
The reality is that I woke up and realized,
(現実は朝目覚めて悟る)
That your life only works when your life’s work is worth your life,
(人生は己に見合う時 初めて機能する)
And I realize my life’s work was worthless.
(そして気づく 私の人生は無価値)
Worthless and this broke me.
(壊れかけてる)
It broke me to see my reflection splinted, broken, barren.
(破れかけの継ぎ接ぎで心が痛んでる)
So I grabbed everything I could fit into these bare hands
(全てを掴もうとして)
And I ran, and I ran so I couldn’t run no more.
(走り 限界で駆けてる)
It all seemed so real to him.
(彼には見えてる)
You could see it ruminating in his eyes again and again.
(彼の目には何度も映ってる)
And he stopped my train of thought, saying,
“Young man do you know I smell like this?”
(次の言葉にドキッとした「若造よ 臭うか？」)
He said, “I smell like this to remind myself
(彼は「己を戒めるためだ」)
That self-sufficiency will no longer keep me clean.”
(「自己満足ではもうキレイになれない」)
“Because do you know why you wear those clothes?”
(「なぜ服を着るか？」)
“Is it simply to look appealing or to hide the fact that you’re healing?”
(魅了するためかキズを隠してるかだ)
Never in a million years that I think I take hygiene tips from a guy like this,
(彼から衛生について習うとは思いもしなかった)
But I did.
(けど起きた)
And the craziest part is, as all these cars drove by,
(おかしなことに車がそこを通る時)
I wonder which one of us they thought was clean
(どちらが綺麗か怪しくなった)
So I guess the moral of the story is,
(この話の教訓は)
You can never judge a book by its cover.
(そこで本を評価するな それは表紙)

待ってました！
その男性は自分だったかもしれない と思うと見ないふりはできなかったのかも。
胸をうつ詩です。
見た目で判断してしまうことは誰にでもあるはず。
でも、それだけが全てでは無い
本の表紙だけを見て全てを理解することが出来ないように
中身を見ることが大切だと教えてくれる、とても美しい詩ですね。
本当の美しさがなんたるかを、少し理解出来た気がします。
ブランドンの詩は日本とはもちろん言語も文化も違うでも魅了される素晴らしい詩を私たちは触れるべきだ！

個人的に最初の詩が一番だなと思っていたけど、ｸﾞﾝｯと更新されました。
心を鷲掴みにされる感じ…でも怖さよりも温かい。素敵な時間でした…
学ぶ事が沢山ある。
二回見直したけど理解しきれなかった。良い話には感じなかったけど英語で理解できると違うのかね。
本当に心に響きます。聞くだけで何故か涙が出てしまいました。
