Montreal Expos 2 at Los Angeles Dodgers 0, F — Expos pitcher Dennis Martinez becomes the first Latin American pitcher to throw a perfect game when he blanks the Dodgers during a day game at Dodger Stadium
I was there! Called the Expos and asked if Dennis Martinez would sign my ticket stubs. They said yes so I mailed them in. Never saw them again. Was sitting in bleachers as Dodger fans started to leave early. I decided to be obnoxious and stood up and yelled. It's a perfect game! People sat down, either out of interest or not wanting to have me point them out.
I met Dennis outside a crappy little strip mall in Managua, Nicaragua on June 7th, 1999. He was really curious about exactly I was doing there, and I was just a gushing fan boy. I lied, and said I had watched his perfect game on tv. Now I have. He was kind of happy, it seemed, to use his English for awhile. After he gave me a signature, and shook my clammy hand (I was hungover and sweating like a pig), he left and several Nicaraguans wandered over to ask just who the hell that guy was… He had some grey in the signature black mane, but he looked in great shape. Long live El Presidente!
Dodgers fans showing so much class… standing and rooting for every strike in the 9th inning…. it’s unbelievable to see. So Much respect to Dodgers fans !!!!
Even in lean years, our Expos still gave us lots of great memories! Congrats El Presidenté !!!
I loved how in the last inning the people in the dodgers bullpen were up at the fence watching even though they were losing they wanted to see the rare moment
Hilarious to me that the announcers keep mentioning the people who left the game early. That’s California for you. I live in Nevada and work in California. People here cannot stand the slight inconvenience or things not going their way. I see people freak out at traffic lights on almost a daily basis because it takes too long.
My dad n I went to visit my grandmother in LA who was sick, & because of that she gave us her tickets to cheer on 'El Presidente', her favourite pitcher. We went & saw history. The LA fans? Absolutely polite & cheerful that two Canadians were there in their section, & how knowledgeable dad was about Dodger history, growing up a Brooklyn Fan in Toronto Ontario Canada. That final out I cried, & so did my father. The fans around us and throughout the stadium gave Martinez an amazing standing ovation, proving they're true fans of the game. Dad passed away a couple years ago, & one of the things he left me was a framed picture of us at Dodger Stadium wearing our Expos caps holding our ticket stubs, which were inside the frame as well. Ty so much for posting this!!
I watched this and Mark Gardner's 9 innings of no-hit ball two days earlier live (because he lost in extra innings, it wasn't technically a no-hitter). This was an amazing series to have witnessed. Such great pitching!
Almost as great as the perfection itself were the LA fans cheering him on. It's not just about winning and losing, you have to get behind any player when they're about to make baseball history. Pure class from those fans!

Odd that the fans would leave early with baseball history being made.
what's the difference between a no- hitter and a perfect game ?
Lasorda is definitely asleep at 12:16

One the greatest moments of my childhood sports fandom.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Expos
Que de beaux souvenirs. Je m’ennuie des Expos.
Great memories. I miss the Expos.
EL PRESIDENTE, EL PERFECTO, WE NEED YOU NOW IN YOUR NATIVE NICARAGUA
I love that this is up. In a weird way I kinda miss the days when their weren't constant graphics on the screen. It feels more personable.

I was their. My dad and I still talk about it to this day.
Anyone notice that at 41:02, announcer started talking about OBP, ten years before Moneyball became a thing?
Boy was lucky and that is all. Some of the greatest pitchers ever to stand on the mound never threw a perfect game but their legacy remains alive.
Perfecto.
My dad and I actually watched this game when it was live. So awesome.

He did it on my 15th birthday and my brother 14th birthday. Thanx Dennis.
I miss Mes expos mes amours
How ironic 2 games before this one same team. Mark Gardner pitched a no hitter only to lose.
He had a perfect game throwing and he also got a base hit at bat, what a perfect day for El Presidente, Nicaraguan pride 🇳🇮 🔥

Great performance by the great Dennis Martinez and Mike Morgan being such a hard luck guy once again.
