The Kansas City Royals are planning a $2 billion, Populous-designed ballpark
intended to replace Kauffman Stadium by 2028. This video traces the decisive April
2, 2024 ballot defeat, the cross-state site competition from Crossroads to Aspiria,
and the human cost for small businesses facing displacement.

We examine the financing math — a $1 billion private pledge, the failed 3/8th-cent
tax, and why that vote transformed everything then move to the design ambitions
and what a new, smaller, more modern park means for the team on the field.

cities, politics, and local lives.

  1. Hey everyone, welcome back to TFC Stadiums!

Today we’re breaking down the Kansas City Royals’ proposed $2B Populous-designed ballpark, the April 2, 2024 ballot defeat, and the cross-state battle to replace Kauffman Stadium.

Let us know your thoughts down below on where the stadium should land, what the vote means for KC, and what you want us to cover next.

  2. We really want the Royals to move to Washington Square Park; we hope it moves there. It's right on the Street Car route, it will sit across from Union Station, the WW1 Museum and a bunch of hotels in the Crown Center district. This will for sure be the best spot for them. It's in talks now. With the new streetcar extension now open, visitors can get to the stadium and park at any stop along the 8-mile route.

  3. Nashvillle is doing a big entertainment build on the Cumberland River East Bank. Vanderbilt and University of Tennessee baseball teams, AAA team make a big fan base along with tourists wanting to see a game. Two thirds of players think Nashville needs a team, either relocating or expansion. Get something done KC or …

  4. i want it in the Crossrods….. I dont give a rat a$$ about any of those useless businesses down there…. they are a rip off…. bars suck, coffee shop fall short of a National Corp brand I like (7 Brew). And the art galleries…. that for up tight college idiots….. i will piss in the snow and take a picture of it and put it on the wall and call it art…..an I like the Power & Light district…. those who dont are probally the useless folks who live off Ward Parkway and the Plaza.

  5. Something's fundamentally wrong if it makes sense that the team should be able to get a better deal by driving out existing business and saddling the taxpayers for a 40-year free ride no matter what.
The studies I've seen say the only quantifiable economic beneficiaries of the presence of a team are the owners of the team.
I've been watching the Royals since their first season at Municipal stadium when I was still playing Little League, I'll be sorry if they go when they go.
But MLB and the Royals have left the grassroots supporters in the dust, the billionaires need to know there's a line in the sand not to be crossed

  6. They said no because both teams was on the ballot. Put just the royals on a new vote. It will pass this time.

  7. Well they may have not gotten their downtown stadium but they will get a new stadium in Kansas along with the Chiefs! Sorry not sorry Missouri! Haha!

  8. When the Chiefs leave Truman, sell the complex to the Royals and let them build their own stadium and ballpark village. The only thing taxpayers should fund is a new, efficient public transportation system that has stops at the Complex. Use money from the sale to get started and eventually run a line across the state to St. Louis, and maybe down to Branson and the capital in Jefferson City.

  9. Having lived in KC MO for 50 years, when going to the Royals was affordable, and fun it has changed, and not for the better. The big advantage that the sports complex has is the large amount of parking which enabled tailgating. The best solution that I think the Royals have is to make the current site theirs. They would have a large area that has fair highway access and no need to obtain land. Many in the KC area will not support new taxes for something they are priced out of.

  10. There was more involved in the 2024 vote. Jackson County over valued properties in order raise taxes so the voters were going to vote down anything the county proposed as a protest. I hope they get the Washington Square location done. I am a Jackson County voter and Chiefs/Royals fan btw.

  11. Nashville is also on the White SoX list. But a NL expansion team makes sense. Rivalries with Cincinnati and Atlanta as well as St. Louis.

  12. Washington Square means they will not have to close small businesses, they can build their village and revitalize crown center. It's a win/win for both. It's also on the street car line that's connected to the free parking on the plaza and art museum district. I'm not sorry they got out played in KS, that is what they get for treating Jackson county voters like fools. Be transparent and up front, do what's right or stay at the K. For those that don't want to pay for it, don't shop or live in Jackson county. Even the Yankees (one of the oldest teams in baseball) rebuilt their stadium. It's silly to expect things to forever stay the same.

  13. If the Royals are running out of options in KC they'll just look for (and will probably find) better options in another city all together. That's a last gasp scenario, but no less of a realistic one as they've still got at least 4 years left in their current stadium.
