公益社団法人三州倶楽部創立100周年記念／維新150年記念公演の為に委嘱を頂き作曲しました。三州倶楽部は鹿児島県・宮崎県の出身者や縁故者が集い、三州の歴史・文化・伝統を調査研究し伝承されています。
演奏会では創立100周年を祝うと共に、琉球、薩摩、日向の民謡が黒潮に乗った海上交易を通じて日本各地に広まっていった過程を解説と演奏で紹介されるので、委嘱にあたり、「鹿児島県・宮崎県の民謡を元に曲を構成してほしい」と承りました。
刈り干し切り歌は、宮崎県、高千穂地方の民謡で、野山に生えているササやカヤなどを秋に刈り取る時に歌われた労作唄です。高千穂の山々にこの唄がこだまのように鳴り響く様子をイメージしながら、主題が変奏して行くように作曲しました。短いイントロに続く主題と、6つの変奏部とコーダの構成になっております。それぞれの変奏の特徴を表現していただければと思います。
Variations on a Theme of Kariboshikiriuta was commissioned by the Sanshu Public Interest Club for its 100th Anniversary and Meiji Restoration 150th Anniversary concert. The Sanshu Club is a gathering of people from Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures given to documenting and sharing Sanshu history, culture and tradition.
The concert celebrated the foundation’s centennial and promotes the dissemination of Ryukyu, Satsuma, and Hyuga folk songs throughout Japan (via maritime trade) using commentary and performance. The commission requested a work based on folk music from those prefectures.
Kariboshikiriuta, a folksong from Takachiho district in Miyazaki prefecture, is a labor song sung when harvesting broadleaf bamboo and thatch growing in the mountains in autumn. The composer wrote the piece with variations, imagining the song echoing throughout the mountains of Takachiho. It consists of a short intro theme, six variations and coda.
