#pittsburghpirates #mlboffseason #piratesoffseason

It was a very busy weekend for MLB First Basemen. The Astros signed Christian Walker. The Yankees signed Paul Goldschmidt. The Guardians traded Josh Naylor to the Diamondbacks and then immediately signed Carlos Santana. Yesterday, the Nationals struck a deal acquiring Nathaniel Lowe from the Texas Rangers. With these plethora of moves it seems like it is a good time to revisit the Pirates trade for Spencer Horwitz while also taking a look at the offseason and see where this team still has to go.

  1. Now you are getting it, I am a small market fan Cleveland Guardians and we can't compete with the WhiteSox in payroll, that is just the way it is, so they had to adapt and what that means is taking advantage of windows.

Cleveland's Championship window is Jose's contract, the Pirates is this dirth of pitching talent, you know have a controllable 1st basemen for 6 years and if he works out, you don't have to worry about an important position and can focuse your money in other needs.

I thought he was Naylor's replacement and did a deep dive and was okay with it. The kid can be really good.

  2. The list of 1st basemen last season with 350+ PAs with a better wOBA than Horwitz is as follows: Guerrero, Harper, Freeman. Thats the whole list.

  3. Anybody who thinks this team can actually contend is insane. So many what ifs. They need everything to fall into place perfectly.

  4. Squeak into the playoffs, then hope for a dominate postseason pitching run. For this to work the bullpen needs to be better, and lots of luck with injuries. This assumes they are not going to do much (if any) moving the needle with bats.

  5. Cherington gets an F- for this offseason. If I were Skenes I would walk in Cherington's office and tell him that if does not significantly improve the team this season, I will demand to be traded before the 2026 season
